These scissors measure approximately 4 3/8" in length and 1 3/4" in width and have a rectangular cut/slot in the blades and a brass knob and brass numbered gauge that was used for sizing the hole. It was apparently plated overall. But most of the finish has worn off with only partial finish remaining on the blades. See scans. R. Heinisch Button Hole Cutter
Antique tailor tool for cutting button holes. Invented and made by R. Heinisch, Newark, NJ. Size of the hole is determined by the length of the cut which is changed by rotating the brass cylinder that the blade cuts against. It will cut with a hole or circle on one end of cut or not, again depending on where cylinder or anvil is turned to. It is complete except for a flat spring that attaches to the handle for opening, it is broken off. See photos.

Antique 1872 Doolittle's Improved Button Hole Cutter Retractable Sewing Tool
It's an antique buttonhole knife. Made of brass, with a triangular steel blade that slides in and out to an adjustable length, and thus width, to match the size of your buttonhole. It's marked on both sides of the slide pusher: D.M. Co. PAT SEP T 3. 72. BPT. CONN. A little research reveals that the company was Doolittle Manufacturing Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut. It measures 1 1/4” wide and 3 1/2” long in its closed position. About 5 3/4” long opened. It shows expected signs of wear and use but still operates properly and would cut a mean buttonhole today. Without the blade, the case measures approx 3" The gauge comes with a 2-sided. Fold-out brochure advertising this gauge and other A. M. Young products. Hilarious.
