Antique Steel Embroidery Scissors with Decorative Brass Sheath. 4 5/8 inches long, unmarked, probably European, probably late 1800’s, the scissors are undecorated and the steel has discoloration from oxidation, one tip is slightly bent, the brass sheath is 2 ¼ inches long and has an embossed design, there is discoloration from oxidation but no cracks in the seams, beautiful design is on both sides, the sheath was a necessary item to keep one from poking oneself with sharp embroidery scissors, they often became lost, this is a very nice example of an early sewing tool even though it is on a very ordinary pair of scissors. It is in the form of a book and covered with brown leather. The sides are gold embossed with scrolls. Birds, fountains and decorative borders. The'spine' is embossed'Lady's Companion' The interior is lined with velvet and printed paper(all original) The leather is in excellent overall condition. Much better than usually seen. The top is gold stamped with the maker or retailer's name, I. Bagshaw, 96 Church Street, Liverpool" It's 4 1/8" tall. 3 1/8" wide and 1 7/8" deep. Some in this style are shown on p. 92 of of Bridget McConnel's book The Story of Antique Needlework Tools. The sterling silver tools(tested) include a ... morethimble. A tape measure, a propelling pencil and a sterling topped perfume bottle. Also included are steel scissors, steel tweezers/earspoon, steel seam knife a spool and a packet of needles. The last two items are in the'secret drawer' below the thimble rest. The steel tools are held in a leather needle book which has moth damage to the wool needle page. The silver tape measure has a silk tape marked in inches and works well to wind in back in. The thimble has an applied band and wriggle work engraving. It has 3 tiny needle holes but you have to look for them. The condition is otherwise excellent. It's about an American size 9(16 mm diameter opening) The little scissors(3 5/8" long) have tight blades and sharp points and cut very well. The propelling pencil works well(twists out the lead) and it holds a 0.7 mm lead. It is stamped with the maker's name. Sampson Mordan. The cut glass perfume bottle has the original glass stopper, a sterling top and has no chips or cracks. The other tools are also in great shape with no damage. Antique W.H. Morley and Sons Buttonhole Scissors 4 3/8-in Length. Germany, with adjustable-spacer screw ca 1920 This is an interesting pair of scissors used by seamstresses to make buttonholes. The scissors were made by W. H. Morley and Sons. Germany, and are the Clover Brand. They were brought to the U.S. around 1920. These scissors are in excellent condition. The spacer screw turns effortlessly and spreads the blades. It is the spacer that determines the length of the buttonhole. The top of the blades near the hinge is cut out so that a space remains open when the blades close. The blades are still fairly sharp. The steel shows very minor staining. But there is no rust, and the blades open and close smoothly. The scissors are a total of 4 1/2" in length. The blades are 1 3/4" from the tip to the hinge. I think the W.H. Up for bid is a figural antique gilded steel owl scissors. Kullenberg Germany,Registered. This was originally gold plated, most of which has worn away. It measures approximately 7" long. The owl is 2 sided, the eyes that had gems in them on one side are missing. The points on the blades are intact and it cuts well. There is no rust, in useable condition.

In this listing I am offering a great garage find. Its an old antique reel tape measure that has a side wind up lever. It appears to be cased in leather and stitched at the sides. But is a hard circle disc. It is 3 3/8" in diameter and 3/4" thick. The tape itself is steel and has areas of rust and wear. The tape comes out great although I only dared pull out 6' of it.plus knowing I'd have to hand wind what I pulled out: Which did wind up smoothly as well. The numbers are not written as they are on todays tape measures. They are the smallest I've ever seen(1/2" long) They open and close and I bet they would cut. They are wrapped up under cellophane with an embossed card from Joseph Rodgers& Sons. One of England's premier cutlers in the 19th century. The card says they were the cutlers to Queen Victoria. This piece was in the collection of Diane Pelham Burn and this is the piece that was photographed in the lower plate on p. 40 of her book Sew Precious. Antique Sheffield Hand Forged Steel Scissors, 19th Century, Sheffield, England
If you look closely you can see most of the identification stamp which is a Crown between a V and R. This V-R and Crown refers to many products. Including Sheffield products, that were produced during the reign of Queen Victoria, who ruled from June 1837 until her death in January, 1901. It is also stamped with the maker’s name. J Smith, Sheffield" Research confirms that this pair of scissors was manufactured in the 19 th century. The scissors are hand forged and have a forged rivet at the swivel point(not a screw) Old business records show definitively that J SMITH and SONS. Arundel Street, Sheffield, England, started their business by first making razors in 1828.

The central circular pivot and the shaping of the blades is distinctive to French scissors of the late 1600s. The quality is superb. The steel has a little discoloration but is in overall amazing condition with no rust or damage. The blades are tight with sharp. Intact points and they still cut well. They measure a petite 3 3/8" long. A pair of very similar form from this era are shown on p. 42 of La Folie des Ciseaux by Frederique Crestin-Billet. They are in a silk and velvet lined leather case. Shagreen is usually from the skin of a shark or ray. This case is decorated all around with gilded studs. The interior mounting. Push button and ring on top are all solid sterling silver(tested) The scissors have nice details and are in excellent condition. The blades are tight with sharp points and they cut like new to the tips. It would be a great pair to actually use. Both the case and scissors date to the mid-late 18th century. The case measures 3 3/4" long x 1 5/8" wide at the top. The scissors are 3" long. The silver hinge is strong and original and the push button latch works well.
