Inside are 2 spools of thread and in the middle is a needle case. The sides are embossed with floral designs and the chain goes through loops on both sides of the top so it can't be lost. Antique Doll's Silver Gilt Sewing Chatelaine w/ 5 Tools * Circa 1890s
Chatlne14 Antique Doll's Silver Gilt Sewing Chatelaine Continental* Circa 1890s This miniature doll sized chatelaine has three chains that are holding 5 items. A tape measure, a needle case, a wax seal, scissors and a thimble. The chatelaine top and chains and all of the tools are gilded silver(test 800-1000 pure) The tape measure has the original marked silk tape. The scissors open and close. The little needle case has some tiny needles and is stamped with the French boar's head hallmark for 800 silver. All of the tools are in excellent condition with no dents or other damage. The chatelaine measures about 4 1/4" long as shown. It is stitched onto a fabric covered board with the top chain curled around for framing. It can be removed by snipping a couple of threads and the length would be about 6" with the top chain stretched ... moreout. The top has a pin so it could be pinned to the doll's(or child's) clothing. It was once in the collection of Diane Pelham Burn and this is the piece that was photographed in plate 17 on p. 49 of her book Sew Precious. Children's Needlework Tools& Dolls' Sewing Tools. It is in the form of a book and covered with brown leather. The sides are gold embossed with scrolls. Birds, fountains and decorative borders. The'spine' is embossed'Lady's Companion' The interior is lined with velvet and printed paper(all original) The leather is in excellent overall condition. Much better than usually seen. The top is gold stamped with the maker or retailer's name, I. Bagshaw, 96 Church Street, Liverpool" It's 4 1/8" tall. 3 1/8" wide and 1 7/8" deep. Some in this style are shown on p. 92 of of Bridget McConnel's book The Story of Antique Needlework Tools. The sterling silver tools(tested) include a ... morethimble. A tape measure, a propelling pencil and a sterling topped perfume bottle. Also included are steel scissors, steel tweezers/earspoon, steel seam knife a spool and a packet of needles. The last two items are in the'secret drawer' below the thimble rest. The steel tools are held in a leather needle book which has moth damage to the wool needle page. The silver tape measure has a silk tape marked in inches and works well to wind in back in. The thimble has an applied band and wriggle work engraving. It has 3 tiny needle holes but you have to look for them. The condition is otherwise excellent. It's about an American size 9(16 mm diameter opening) The little scissors(3 5/8" long) have tight blades and sharp points and cut very well. The propelling pencil works well(twists out the lead) and it holds a 0.7 mm lead. It is stamped with the maker's name. Sampson Mordan. The cut glass perfume bottle has the original glass stopper, a sterling top and has no chips or cracks. The other tools are also in great shape with no damage. This is an Antique Singer Sewing Machine Oil Can with Clip. These were typically found in Singer bent wood cases and some older electric cabinets. It measures 2" diameter and 3" tall. It has a good antique finish and is not dented. There are some very light scratches. The original cork seal is missing. But I found a new rubber O-ring for it! The bottom has faint surface rust around the lip. The paint on the clip has scratches and wear. It comes with both original mounting screws. ANTIQUE CAST IRON SEWING CLAMP IN THE FORM OF A DOLPHIN. ca. 1840
Continental ca. 1840. This sewing necessity was used to hold fabric when hemming. It is very elaborately decorated right down to the thumb screw used to attach the clamp to the work table. The two sided thumb screw is in the form of an angel with wings and the head of the dolphin supports a pin cushion. The condition is excellent with no cracks. Chips or breaks and the steel spring which opens the mouth of the dolphin is strong and very functional.

Which has been deeply carved with birds and butterflies, and so typical of Cantonese export carving of the early 19th century. AGE The clamp dates to the middle of the 19th century. Circa 1850's. SIZE The clamp measures 10.5cm(4" high. 3cm(1¼" deep and 0.5cm(¼" wide. CONDITION The clamp is in very good condition for considerable age. I have sold many of the hoops on eBay; I think this is not an original pair. The hopp's anchor does NOT snggly and tightly fit into the base. It is a little loose. I think the hoop pieces are from one set and the anchor base is from and older set. A bit of paper or tape wrapped around the plug would make it tighter and fit well for use. Function/Use: Widely used in Europe by women who ran cottage(at-home) businesses. Much better than the simple hoops that you must hold in your hand. This type of hoop allows the use of both hands and minimizes needle sticks. Using the mount screw to attach it to a desk. Counter or tabletop for working on fine embroidery pieces.
