It has a gold stamped fountain motif on the front& back with birds drinking from it. It is embossed. Scrolled and gold-stamped on all sides and is hand painted red, green, blue and white. The spine is stamped'LADY'S COMPANION' in gold letters and is enhanced with birds above and below the lettering. The top lifts off& fits nicely on the bottom hal f. Inside lid is lined in a pink paper with gold stamped stars design. The bottom section is a burgundy leather with fitted burgundy velvet lined compartments for the various tools. There is a tiny pin cushion below the thimble. It measures approx. 4" x 3" x 2" The previous owner who lives in France. Found it at their local ... morebrocante market in Provence. Description Stunning antique sewing stiletto. Which has been hand carved from a single wonderfully luminous section of mother of pearl with arrow shaped handle. The stiletto would date to the early part of the 19th century. Circa 1830. and would have originally been part of a completely fitted work/sewing box. The stiletto would have undoubtedly been part of a Palais Royal set, and the image of the leaves/flowers were a popular theme used. An example of this type of stiletto can be seen in Bridget McConnel's book The Story of Antique Needlework Tools. On page 100. AGE The stiletto would date from the early 19th century. Circa 1830. They have gilded floral ferrules and steel blades. The condition is excellent with no chips or cracks and the mother of pearl is very luminous. They measure almost 3 5/8" long and 1 1/2" across the bows. The steel blades are tight but don't quite meet at the tips. They cut very well. Tape Unusual Antique Mother Of Pearl& Vegetable Ivory Tape Measure English* Circa 1870 The top of this very unusual little antique tape measure is carved of mother of pearl. It is unusual in that it has a vegetable ivory base rather than one carved of bone. This is the only one I've ever seen. The silk tape is marked in inches(starts at 3 inches) and i t winds in by turning the top. The top is beautifully carved with a pierced and scalloped border. It is in excellent working condition and is 7/8" high. A very similar tape(with a bone base) is shown on p. 139 of Nerylla Taunton's book Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries. Vegetable ivory comes from the corozo or tagua nut of a South American palm tree and was a favorite with the Victorians. It has the hardness and texture of ivory and a warm honey color. WELCOME! I am offering a Fabulous Victorian Sterling Silver& M.O.P. Sewing Set Antique Leather bound sewing box with gold tooling on the lid top. Double brass hinged back& push button closure work well. The bottom is stamped in Gold lettering: JOSEPH RODGERS& SONS CUTLERS TO HER MAJESTY CORPORATE MARK 6 NORFOLK ST. SHEFFIELD ENGLAND" Inside lid is covered in a burgundy velvet with loops for the various sewing tools. Removable tray is covered in matching velvet with burgundy leather backing. There are loops for the various tools and a fitted thimble space. Inside bottom is a matching velvet with reddish burgundy silk edges. Gold tooling on the edges. The box is in Very Good Condition. Antique Thimble Holder Sail Boat with Mother-of-Pearl Sails
This is a souvenir from the Panama Pacific Exposition San Francisco 1915. Thimble holder in the form of a sail boat. The boat is a sea shell and the sails are made from mother-of-pearl. The base is metal the sail supports are metal and the ropes are twisted wire. The piece measures 51/2" tall appox 31/2" long and the bottom of the largest sail measures 21/2" across.The sails are hand painted with blue flowers. The thimble holder is made of metal circles attached to the main sail support The piece is in very good to excellent condition without chips cracks or damage. Thanks for looking.

Mopscis Antique Palais Royal Mother of Pearl Scissors w/ Pansies French* Circa 1810-20 These lovely mother of pearl scissors came from a fitted box of Palais Royal sewing tools. The handles are hand carved and feature quivers of arrows next to the bows. One side has 2 gold enameled pansy seals. They have gilded floral ferrules and steel blades. The condition is excellent with no chips or cracks and the mother of pearl is very luminous. They measure 3 1/2" long and not quite 1 1/2" across the bows(9.1 cm x 3.7 cm) The steel blades are tight with intact points and they cut pretty well. A variety of Palais Royal scissors are shown on pp. 49-57 of Nerylla Taunton's book Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries. Moptape Antique MOP& Bone Workbox Tape Measure English* Circa 1850 This little antique tape measure has a mother of pearl top carved in the form of a flower with scalloped edges. The bottom and sides are carved of bone* with a turned design. It has the original pink silk ribbon tape marked in inches(starts at 1/2" The little bone stop is also original. The tape winds back in by turning the pearl top. Aside from a fine crack on the back side. The condition is excellent with no chips or other damage. It measures almost 1" high and the top is 1" in diameter. The mother of pearl has nice luminescence. It was once part of an English workbox. A tape in this style is shown on p. 139 of Nerylla Taunton's book Antique Needlework Tools and she shows the type of workbox it's from on p. 105. Antique Thimble Holder Ship Boat Mother-of-Pearl Sail Owl Columbian Expo1893
What a cute little souvenir sewing thimble holder from the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. This thimble holder is in the form of a sailing ship. The little sailing ship boat is a made of a Sea Shell with the mainmast being cut from a mother-of-pearl shell as well. The main sail is hand painted with blue flowers plus the words"Worlds Columbian Exposition Chicago 1893" The sail mast is metal with twisted wire for ropes to fasten the main sail with a burgee or pennant at the top. The figurehead on the bow is a metal owl and at the stern there is a metal anchor held with a chain. The anchor shows some bends as it is thin metal. Can be seen in photos. The base of the ship is metal. But does have 2 thin splits in the design which can be seen in the picture of the pieces bottom. They appear as thin white marks in the design, but ... moreyou are seeing the light through these splits, not sure but probably an original design flaw. Difficult to recognize until examining it closely. So use the magnifier feature to see it in the photos. The actual thimble holder seems to be wood or cork wrapped with unknown fabric. Leather or animal skin, as it appears to have a pattern. THERE IS NO THIMBLE INCLUDED IN THIS AUCTION It measures approx 3 1/4" tall X approx 3 1/4" long X approx 1 1/4" wide. All and all it is in very good condition for it's age with no cracks or damage other that mentioned and could use a cleaning. It is being sold as found. Up for auction is a pair of antique French mother of pearl sewing scissors. They feature carved dolphins on the handles with long pointed blades. The steel blades are marked J.D. Chevalier and measure 6 inches long. Each handle is carved from single pieces of mother of pearl. The handles measure just over 3 inches tall by 2.5 inches wide. These lovely scissors have a condition issue on one of the handles. They were obviously dropped some time ago and the handle has a large chip on the underside where they broke away from the blade. The handle loop shows a glue joint where the ring portion was broken. Still secure but the blades would need to be glued. These scissors still retain an excellent cutting edge.
