This piece was in the collection of Diane Pelham Burn and this is the piece that was photographed in the lower plate on p. 40 of her book Sew Precious. Scarce Antique Brass 1 3/4" Miniature Beer Stein Tape Measure W/ Thimble Holder
Description Offered at auction is a scarce antique figural beer stein tape measure/thimble holder which stands 1 3/4" tall and is just under 1" in diameter across the base. It is made from brass which has a pressed patten of cavaliers and peasants. There are four people-a woman with a basket. A man who is walking or leaping, a cavalier on a horse and a man with his foot on a stump. The tape draws out from the side and retracts by turning the base-it is not spring loaded. The lid of the stein opens to reveal a place for the thimble. The piece probably dates to the early 1900's may have been made in Germany for export, but it is not marked. It does have"Pat" for"patented" on the bottom. It is in very nice condition with no damage to the stein and the cloth tape which measures in inches.
