The person knitting would place the sheath inside his or her waist band then insert the end of her knitting needle into the small hole in the end of the handle. This allowed for continued knitting while traveling on a long horse and buggy ride or ocean voyage. This piece of folk art is rich in details carved the full length of the shaft. It bears the initials EH x H. It belonged to a woman born in Northern England in the mid 1800's. Her name was Elizabeth Hetherington(or possibly spelled Heatherington) It measures approximately 2-1/2 inches wide by 10-1/2 inches long. It is in excellent gently used condition with no chips. Very Early Antique Dress Makers Measuring Tape Hand Carved Ivory Bone 18th Cent
Very Early Antique Dress Makers Measuring Tape Hand Carved Ivory Bone Silk This is a very old and quite unusual dress makers measuring tape. Although it looks to be French in its construction. The fact that it is a yard measure suggests that it may be early American. It is either bone or ivory and the body of the canister appears to be older than the top which makes me think it might be a marriage. But the spool and body are very old as is the tape itself. I have never seen a numbering sequence quite like the one on this silk tape. Its end notation is 1 yd but it is not a true yard, more like 35" And the measurement at the beginning of the tape is pretty baffling. From tip to base the container and spool measure 1.5"so miniature. The numbering system suggests this is a 17th or 18th century tape but I am not an expert on this items ... moreso please examine the extensive set of photos to make your determination. Serious downsizing means that this and many other wonderful items must go so check out my other auctions for outstanding buys. Superb Antique Hand Carved Bone Needle Case and Tape Measure c1800s
This outstanding needle case and tape measure combination is truly amazing. It measures 5 1/2" long and has a diameter of 3/4" The carving is very fine and has a beautiful bird and two cherubs incorporated into its design. There is one very tiny place in the lattice work that is missing(smaller than a pinhead) a few very fine cracks. This item dates back to the 1800s if not a little before. So considering its age it's in very good condition. The top cap holds a silk teal ribbon for measuring. Which is marked off in'el' units of measure. The'el' was a Dutch unit of measure from 1725 to 1869 and was approximately 27" long, the approximate length from the armpit to the tip of the fingers. The ribbon is marked on in smaller units of 1 5/8" but the markings end around 27" which is the length of a Dutch'el' ... moreThere seems to be a little handle missing to wind the tape up but it does not detract from the appearance of the needle case/tape measure and the silk ribbon can be wound back into its holder by hand. The cap on the other end unscrews to open the larger chamber that holds the needlework tools. This needle case comes with two tools. A stiletto and another tool with a flat end.

ANTIQUE Circa 1900 UNUSUAL Hand Carved THIMBLE HOLDER ETUI w/original Thimble! I believe it to be carved from the Tagua or similar nut which was customary due to its extremely hard consistency- much like that of ivory. This piece was found in a tredle sewing machine drawer. The case has dings. Chips, cracks and character but remains very stable and screws together nicely. Few nicks as shown in pictures. Cracks due to very hard substance drying. Pieces are very stable. T he 2 parts screw together very nicely and it holds tightly. Thimble looks very nice- detailed and in excellent condition.

It is presently dark as it was so dry I felt the need to oil it. It will soon return to it's lighter color. Though the beautiful grain will still display nicely. It measures approximately 5cm x 3cm. It is excellent condition with no issues with cracks or chips. The original silk tape is present. Though the loosely tied knot starts at the 9" mark. The body starts out with a nicely ringed pattern that moves into a horizontal ridge design. Below this is a ... morepierced. Double row of dot's. The screw off end cap has a lovely scalloped edge with no broken pieces. The center spool is also complete. With the light color of the center pole against the dark outer case and the prominent pattern of the grain, all combine to make a very handsome piece. This item was in my grandparents estate. Which consist's of many sewing item's, all from France, which came to American by way of my great grandparents.
