Antique RARE Scissors Pat'd Aug. 24,09 Fancy Handle Regulator Seamstress Sewing
You are looking at a very old rare scissors. I have not seen another like this one! There is a Pat'd date next to the little floral screw. On the other side it has what looks like fancy initials and I cannot make the end out. But what I can read is THE BH(M?and one more letter I cannot make out. I could not get them in the picture to show up. They have a fancy handle. There is an indentation where the little knob on the fancy side meets the thumb part. They have flat tips. The first(top photos) belonged to my great grandmother on my father's side of the family. It came with an old desk that I inherited from my grandmother over forty years ago. It measures about 6" long overall with 3-1/4" of that being the gloss black painted handle. I think the egg portion is painted wood but it sort of feels and looks like it may have been dipped in a hard. Plaster-like material. The egg also has some staining as if it ... morewas hung upside down and the handle paint ran onto it. It could also have been accidentally stained by some kind of dye(possibly laundry bluing etc. However the stain got there it looks quite attractive and unique. There is a small amount of wear on the handle as one would expect. The second egg I found in an old truck. About 20 years ago, which contained items once owned by a great aunt and uncle from my mother's side of the family and is comparatively quite primitive in appearance! It measures about 6-3/8" long overall with 3-1/2" of that being the handle. It appears to have been originally painted a light brown color. Most of which was worn away long ago! It's interesting in that it has been repaired. It's impossible to know whether it was patched by the original maker or by a subsequent owner. The paint extends partially over the repair which makes me think the maker painted over it thinking nobody would ever know! The shanks(on both sides) have been inlaid with little gold studs(test solid 14 Kt) The steel blades are tight with intact points and they cut well. Two of the gold studs are missing on the reverse side. But the condition is otherwise excellent. They have no rust or other damage and still have most of the mat finished polish on the surface. It is marked Pat Apld. For. It measures 8 1/2" long altogether. Not sure of the wood type but it has a mahagony type finish. There is wear to the finish and a small chip where the handle meets the bottom of the turned section. A really nice old darner to add to your collection. They were made by Mappin& Webb and are in excellent condition with very little discoloration. They measure 3 3/4" long. The other pair has faceted shanks and bows and is slightly older(c. 1870) They were made by Salt& Son of Sheffield and are 3 7/8" long. Both pairs have tight blades.
