Description Wonderful antique bone( cattle- Bovine species) small sewing winding or netting clamp. Which has been deeply carved with birds and butterflies, ... moreand so typical of Cantonese export carving of the early 19th century. AGE The clamp dates to the middle of the 19th century. Circa 1850's. SIZE The clamp measures 10.5cm(4" high. 3cm(1¼" deep and 0.5cm(¼" wide. CONDITION The clamp is in very good condition for considerable age. With no damage to the bone, although there would have been two disks to the winder section and only one remain. Also i think there would have been a small finial to the top of the clamp(where small hole is drilled) and this is missing. Please refer to the above photographs for details of condition. It was early 19th century Chinese export work for the English market and it has a beautiful old patina and grain pattern. Inside is a set of carved netting tools. All in excellent condition. Aside from some hairline age cracks. The condition is excellent and the top screws on well. The top has a small drilled hole. Closed, the case measures 6 1/4" long. Description Wonderful antique bone( cattle- Bovine species) small sewing winding or netting clamp. Which has been deeply carved with birds and butterflies, and so typical of Cantonese export carving of the early 19th century. AGE The clamp dates to the middle of the 19th century. Circa 1850's. SIZE The clamp measures 10.5cm(4" high. 3cm(1¼" deep and 0.5cm(¼" wide. CONDITION The clamp is in very good condition for considerable age. With no damage to the bone, although there would have been two disks to the winder section and only one remain. The person knitting would place the sheath inside his or her waist band then insert the end of her knitting needle into the small hole in the end of the handle. The crochet hook measures 7" and the awl is 3& 3/4" long. The hook is a little different because it has additional turning half way down the shaft. Very good condition-from late 1800's- early 1900's. I do not know what the wood is, but it has a very fine grain, lustrous patina and the screw action is very smooth. It was almost certainly intended as a sewing etui, but in France these elaborate items were sometimes used to hold a rosary. A pre-owned lot of 7 vintage carved and/or turned crochet hooks in ox bone or other material. Three have impressed marks-U.S.A. Susan Bates with the size and a fourth. Part marking with the size only. One is marked USA Size 3, the longer one with the button end is unmarked as far as I can see, and the last one has no markings, is more finely carved. They look to be in great vintage condition. They certainly have been used, lovingly, I am certain. These belonged to my mother who loved all things to do with crochet.
