It is a small button hook used for gloves and shoes cleverly attached to a soldered ring so it can be worn as a pendant on a chain. That is not the only clever thing about its design. The hook is retractable. It slides up for use revealing the hook and slides down to be hidden when not in use. There is a moveable textured round band around the cylinder which one pulls up for use or down for storage. This button hook is enclosed in an attractive gold plated cylinder body that has an embossed design. There is a rectangular plaque on the cylinder for monogramming. This hook pendant is in excellent condition with the sliding mechanism working well and the gold coverage in great condition. It looks to have ... morebeen very gently used. The top of the pendant has a bronze domed top. These hooks were necessary for buttoning up shoes. Gloves, and blouses of the day. Men used hooks as well to aid their dressing. It is a romantic dressing tool from yesteryear. Its size makes me think this one was intended for use outside of the home as when traveling or for the purse or worn on a chain around the neck. Perhaps a chatelaine wore it on her person in order to dress her ladyship. I would think the ladies of that era had a larger version for their home vanity and a smaller one for when they were away from their dressing table. Perhaps women wore this type of button hook pendant on a chain when away from home. This button hook is a decidedly feminine article. It measures 2 3/8" when closed and 3 3/8" when open. Up for bid is an antique Owl figural brass made in Germany tape measure. It measures 1 1/2" across x 1/2" deep. The mechanics of it works perfectly. When the button on the back side is pressed it retracts with a strong spring. The cloth tape is in excellent condition with numbers. It has a stainless steel back and the front repousse Owl with yellow glass eyes with much detail and he is sitting on a branch in a tree. The front reminds me of Victorian type antique brass button. Two Antique Vintage Celluloid Button Hooks - early 1900s
These are two vintage Celluloid button hooks from the early 1900s used to pull tiny shoe buttons through tiny button holes on high button-up leather boots or for buttons on gloves. One is made of apple juice toned celluloid. The face has an applied decoration of a pearl colored marble paint. The other hook is made of an opaque white Celluloid. The face has an applied decoration of a green pearl colored marble paint. Both hooks are silver toned metal and have ornate ribbed areas at the bottom of the shaft. And a round hook at the end. They are both in good condition with the exception of the opaque white hook which has lost a portion of the green pearl colored marble paint on one side.
