Rare Antique 2-Sided Wooden Darn Lace Sew Tool Edwardian Glove Shoe Stretcher
THIS AUC TION IS FOR ONE ANTIQUE VICTORIAN DARNING TOOL! Rare and Adorable Victorian Double- Sided. Multi-purpose Glove& Stocking or Hose Darning Tool. May also have been used as a glove or slipper stretcher. These came in a pair, but they are very handy and we began using one to, well, darn and mend lace. The Darning tool is two-sided. One side appears to be for darning gloves and the other for shoes or sleeves. B eautifully crafted& lovely! The smaller wooden darning tips measure approx. 1 inch x 1.5 inch and is cylindrical. The triangular darning tool measures approx. 1 3/4 x 2 1/4 and is flat bottomed. Both darning tips have been sanded& painted pink so to not snag or damage gloves. Stockings or lace. The metal connecting the two wooden tools feels like steel or aluminium, and has also been painted pink. It is slightly flexible, ... morebut not bendable. They are slightly curved either th r ough use or storage. The larger sides are covered with pink& green striped heavyweight cotton or linen muslin fabric. Which has been padded around the triangular darning tool( or stretcher) It is tied on with a grosgrain ribbon, and easily removed. We imagine that these may have been repurposed in the Edwardian Era as a store display, as they are in wonderful condition, with only a wee bit of yellowing that is hardly apparent. The striped canvass is adorable. Very feminine S ewing& Darn ing Acces sory that would look lovely besi de an Antique Pin Cushion. Condition: Excellent mus eum condition. They do not look brand new. Bu t they do not look used either. Th ere are no chips. But the paint on the t op wooden tips is thinner in some places and is either worn off o r never had coated t h e sides of the metal. The fabric is in lovely condition and the stripes were even sewn together to match up pe rfectly. Someone took an immense amount of care and love to make these. Antique Boxwood Sewing Tool Braider’s Block Lace-Making Tool?
Antique Boxwood Braider’s Block Lacemaking Tool? I have to admit I don’t understand how this old contraption works! At the top of the arch there is a hole with a porcelain tube fitting. On both sides of this hole. There are some fine wires. On the underside of the arch near the apex and on both sides, there is a tiny amber glass ring. The ring is affixed to a fine metal spring, so that you can pull the ring out from the carved hole in which it fits. I take it these rings and the hole on top get threaded. On the inside of the arch on one side, below the glass ring, there is a round metal inset. On the other side below the glass ring, there is a carved notch that extends partway across. There is a thicker wire lever on the inside bottom that moves up and down, woth a square loop at the top. Two thicker wires fit into holes on the sides. The ... moresides of the base are carved differently: one side with a long wide groove, and the other with small, angles“cubby holes. The bottom has a slit on both ends. Both slits have an inset tiny brass nail on one end, and a hole at the other. With a jeweler’s loop, I can see the end of the coils down in the holes. The wood has a lovely patina. An unusual celluloid lace making tool ~ embroidery hoop ~ needlework thingy. Not sure what it is. It came in a sewing basket so I am assuming it is some sort of needlework tool. It is stamped Gloria, there are a couple of other marks that I can't read. It measures about 2 7/8 x 3 7/8 inches, the shorter section is 2 3/8 x 3 inches; it appears to be in good vintage condition.
