Vintage Whitall Tatum Glass Apothecary Specimen Jar 12.75" Clamp Sealer Pat 1895
From a local estate. Here is a grand old apothecary specimen jar with glass lid and clamp seal. The jar stands an impressive 12.75" tall with lid, about 14.25" tall with the clamp installed. The jar is hand-blown with pontil mark on the bottom, the lid is marked"Whitall, Tatum& Co. Philadelphia New York, with a patent date of June 11, 1895. Jar and lid show some age. And there are the remains of an old rubber seal ring around the rim. The jar has a little roughness around the inner rim, and there are flaws and straw marks inside the glass, one looks like a crack and one looks like a ding, neither of the flaws can be felt from either side of the glass. Other than that, just normal bubbles, straw marks, and some grime from decades of storage. Just a grand old jar, I didn't try to clean it, looks awesome and definitely ... moreold. LOUIS AGASSIZ Glass LARGE 13" SPECIMEN JAR Harvard EX MUSEUM COMPARATIVE ZOOLOGY
This is an auction for a large flint glass specimen jar owned by Louis Agassiz(1807-1873) A famous geologist, paleontologist, and professor of natural history. This was obtained by my great-grandfather, Walter Gifford in the 1960's from Harvard's Museum of Comparative Zoology. University Antiquaries sold these jars during the late sixties to 1975 but I believe that Walter obtained this(and the smaller jars in my other auction) prior to their sales. Agassiz' incredible collection of specimen jars was documented by Mckinney and Wulfsberg(1975) and their publication described the importance of these jars and how pricey they were for Agassiz. Most likely, this originally held specimens until it was given to my great grandfather(and until the museum was demolished and reconstructed) Walter Gifford was a Harvard graduate and had a very ... moreclose relationship with Harvard. Walter was the President of AT&T for most of the 1900's and is often credited for making the company what it is today. He was also Ambassador to Great Britain(worked with Winston Churchill) and worked alongside several presidents. The jar measures approximately 13" tall x 5 1/2" wide. The jar's top lifts easily. The jar is in great condition and I do not see any defects. Unfortunately. I don't have any documentation to accompany this jar other than a hand written note that was inside this jar(it is my grandmother's handwriting) All of this information came from my grandmother who was married to Richard Gifford, Walter's son. However, I can write a letter of provenance at the request of the winning bidder. This jar would make an outstanding display piece in a home or office. It measures 8" tall without the lid x 8 1/8" across, the mouth opening measuring 5 1/8" across, it has lugs built into the glass lid so you can tie a string on them to suspend the specimen it has whitall tatum& co Philidelphia New York pat June 11th 1895 in raised letters on the lid. The lid has 1 chip on top side check pictures and several tiny chips more towards the bottom section.check pictures, The glass ring undernieth that sits inside the jar is in really good condition with no chips nor cracks. the jar section has whittle marks from the mold and air bubbles in the top section ring area and few on jar lower section. check all pictures. the lugs are located in the bottom ... moreof the lid they are still intact and no cracks or chips, they are made to suspend the specimen. Loads of included bubbles and string like mold cooling marks ... morethat upon first glance you would think them cracks- which they are not. The interior of the jar is very smooth. The exterior mold lines are bumpy and irregular. There two faint polished ghost seams 3 1/2" to the right of the rough seams. The original intended purpose of this fine jar is unknown. It has performed many years as a countertop flour canister. Measurements: Height: 13" with lid; 9 5/8" without Diameter of top: 12" Outside diameter of cylinder: 10 1/4" Inside diameter: 9 5/8" Inside depth: 9" Bottom Diameter: 9" contact surface curves out and upward to 10 1/4" Low Waist indent: 5/8" Liquid capacity: Approx 2.5 gallons Condition: Very good overall condition. Whitall Tatum specimen jar with iron wheel closure pontil
Offered for auction is a Whitall Tatum specimen jar with original glass lid and huge iron wheel clamp closure. The closure is very thick and strong. And functions smoothly. It even retains some of its original black paint. The jar is tall. Almost 8 inches without the lid and 9.5 inches to the top of the closure. The volume is roughly a pint. The glass insert has two fins on the bottom with holes to hang a specimen in suspension for display. The bottom of the jar has a pontil scar and the top has a ground lip in good condition. Offered for auction is a Whitall Tatum Specimen Jar. The jar measures 7" tall to the top of the lid. The bottom diameter is 6" and the top diameter for the opening is 5 1/2" The jar has a pontil mark on the bottom which would indicate it was hand blown. The lid has some small chips around the rim. Antique Smithsonian Museum Specimen Jar Approximate Height(inches) To Top: 10.5 To Lip: 10 To Shoulder: 8 Approximate Diameter(inches) At Base: 4.5. Glass Lid does not fit perfectly. I recently acquired a large collection of these jars ranging from 3-6” tall and from 1.5-3.5” in diameter. All the jars are unmarked but originally came from the Smithsonian Museum in DC and were most likely made in the early 1900’s. They are all hand blown glass and many have little glass hooks on the underside of the block top glass lids allowing specimen to be hung inside the jars. I will be listing these jars individually and in small lots in the coming weeks. You are bidding on the pictures jar/lot. I tried to take good pictures so condition could accurately be judged. Each jar is unique and even similar sizes vary slightly from one jar to the next. Jars ... morewere handmade and are very old and they may include small flea bites and imperfections in the glass. I will list any noticeable cracks or chips at the top of the listing under the dimensions. Jars come from the estate of Henry Wilfred Setzer who retired from the National Museum of Natural History. Smithsonian Institution, in Washington, D.C. where he was the curator of mammal. During his life Dr. Setzer did field work in Africa, Asia, the Near East, Latin America and Alaska and did extensive research collection and cataloging small mammals in Africa, including one species named for him Gerbillurus Setzeri. Dr. Setzer was a member of the American Biological Society of Washington. It is beautiful wavy glass with natural imperfections. The lid is embossed WHITALL TATUM PHILADELPHIA& NEW YORK. The jar has a nice pontil scar on the base(photo 7) evidence of the hand blown nature of the jar. The cast iron clamp works perfectly. Rare 1890's Whitall Tatum & Co. Hand Blown Glass Specimen Jar Vintage Apothecary
This listing is for a rare Whitall Tatum and Co. hand-blown glass specimen jar. This item is sold AS IS. The jar dates from between 1898 and 1901 and is hand-blown soda lime glass. The glass has natural imperfections including a few small bubbles and slight waviness in the sides of the glass due to natural thickness variation. The bottom of the jar has a slight mark where the punty was attached during the jar's fabrication. The top flange also has a slight fold where it was attached to the jar body. The inner lip of the flange is ground glass. As seen in the pictures. The lid of the jar reads WHITALL.TATUM& Co PHILADELPHIA NEW YORK. The lid also has two small hand-blown hooks from which specimens can be suspended. Both the jar and lid have no chips. Cracks, clouding or damage. This jar does not include the metal screw clamp. Dr. Theodore Corson Wheaton founded the T. C. Wheaton Company in 1888 at 917 No. Second Street. Millville. New Jersey. This company was well-known for producing drug and screw-cap tablet vials as Theodore Wheaton was particularly interested in pharmaceutical glassware. Found in an old utility shack. Greenish tint to glass-Ground in neck and on stopper-NO CRACKS or CHIPS. 10" tall! 5" across bottom. Neck opening 2 1/2" About 1/2 Gal size. Wheaton Logo Stamp on bottom dates to the 1940s.
