Two nice black amethyst akro agate depression glass covered apothecary jars. I purchased them in an estate sale. In good condition with some minor flaws. These are pressed-in glass. There are some lines. Like on the tops. They look like creases in the glass. They are not cracks. These do need some TLC. The decal for Tea and Flour are peeling off, and there is a bit of dust. They are easily removeable. They both have: one chip on inside rim of top see pics. 9& 10, flour has some chip on inside rim bottom see pic. 11, tea has tight crack by seam see pic. 8. They have fissures or creases around top rims of bottoms. It's the way they were made. They are not cracks, just lines where the glass was forced into the mold. They have those wonderful raised panels on the front for the labels under the decals. I hope you can pick them out under ... morethe decals. I was told this bottle dates back to the late 1800's and was a favorite amongst chemists and pharmacists because the glass was so PURE(free from zinc. SCARCE ANTIQUE AMETHYST APOTHECARY PEDESTAL SHOW JAR
Up for auction is an extremely rare hand-blown. Blackberry-purple American apothecary display pedestal jar. In twenty-five aggressive years of collecting, I have only ever seen one other of these that was green on sold on ebay about six years ago. What makes this piece so special is that the inside is lined in milk glass, a process called casing that allows the outside color to capture light in manner that radiates a warming and uncanny color even in low light. Only a master craftsman could make such an exceptional piece, which involved many steps in production and only found in rarest of apothecary show jars. The item is fully 21 inches to top of the original ornamental stopper. Without stopper, the jar is just under 17 inches and stopper is 7 inches. It is made of nice sturdy-thick glass and 3.8 lbs. in weight. Condition: About perfect ... morefor something well over a century old. Note that the item is hand-blown, so I discerning eye will of course find some irregularities, which give such items their character and authenticity. The only think I notice is that the piece doesn't stand 100% straight and has a very minor lean. I mention only for accuracy as the piece is quite simply awesome. Rare Amethyst tinted Poison jar about 5 inches tall and 3 inches wide. In fantastic condition except for a slight chip on the inside of the bottle's lip(pictured) Original Cap is in pristine condition. First picture is taken with flash; the others are not. Letters are unworn and clearly molded"POISON" across the front. Bottle has a mold seam that fades at around shoulder height which was basis for dating. Height is 6 1/4" Width is 2 1/4" depth is 1 1/18" The jar has a light amethyst tint naturally from years is the sun called SCA"sun colored amethyst" or"sun-purpling" due to the manganese in the glass. Much of the“clear” or“off-clear” glass made during the 1880s-1920s contains the element Manganese. Which was actually added to the glass“batch” as a decolorizing agent. The manganese helped to“mask” or“neutralize” the effects of iron which typically causes some shade of light green, blue-green or aqua color in glass. Huge Antique Apothecary Hand-Blown Amethyst Purple Druggist Jar
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Up for auction is a truly stunning. And highly collectible, rough-pontiled, bright amethyst apothecary jar. This piece has been in my personal collection for over 10 years and is one of my favorites. It is a heavy 3.8 lbs. of beautifully-colored purple glass with a fine hand-painted gilt label that reads, Pulv: Zingiber” i.e. pulverized ginger, a powerful medicinal that’s been popular since ancient times– a really cool label, right of Uncle Frankenstein’s laboratory. Also note the incredible etched numeric measurement table on the back, with numbers in a very interesting font no longer in use– all done by hand! I believe the jar if from the early 19th Century and was made in England. The jar is a full, 1 foot tall! It is nearly 6.5 inches in diameter at base, and mouth ... moreis 2.5 inches in diameter. Condition: Very Good- minus a few superficial scratches, some very minor label wear, which looks great and is in especially good condition for age. There are a few 4-5 very small fleabites, but most are smooth, almost polished, and are likely irregularities and small burst bubbles associated with its manufacture– nothing that detracts visually, and only noticeable upon close inspection. Half of these little rough spots are located along the outer edge of the lip on front of the jar. The only scratch that stands out, if you can call it that is one, is about an inch left of the#7 on the back. The photo shows something near#9, but that’s just lighting, nothing more.
