This is an English pharmacy stock jar used to store ½ grain Morphine suppositories. Grain was a unit in the old British Imperial system of weights equivalent to 64 milligrams of the metric system. Green ribbed glass bottles and jars were used to store"poisons" in dispensaries(term poison was applied to all potent medicinal substances which. When taken in large enough quantity, could result in severe poisoning or death) The use of glass bottles in pharmacies dates from 1600s but they became popular in mid to late 1700s. Early poison bottles were blue. The color green became widely adopted in mid 1800s. The jar is marked on the bottom with the letter"W" surrounded by an octagon rim. This is a mark of Woods Brothers Glass Co. Ltd who operated from Borough Flint Glass Works in Barnsley. Yorkshire, established in 1828. ... moreIn late 1800s and early 1900s, up to the World War I, they were mainly engaged in the manufacture of"W" brand of English Chemical Glassware and were a major supplier of druggists bottles and jars. The factory was closed down in 1955. This jar comes from the pharmacy at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London. That hospital was started in 1851 by William Marsden. Originally as a dispensary of medicines for cancer patients, but in 1862 it was moved to its current location in Fulham Road London and started functioning as a cancer hospital. It was much later, in 1954, when it was named the Royal Marsden Hospital. The change in regulations in 1970's made the use of the pharmacy stock bottles redundant. The new legislation required that the medicines should not be transferred from the original manufacturer's container until they are dispensed to the patient. That opened a flood of such stock glass bottles on the market. I know that the jar for sale comes from that hospital but I do not know when it was acquired by its dispensary. This is a large Victorian English pharmacy stock bottle used to store Colored Tincture of Iodine. Green ribbed glass bottles were used to store"poisons" in dispensaries(term poison was applied to all potent medicinal substances which. When taken in large enough quantity, could result in severe poisoning or death and to medicines intended for external use only- not to be taken by mouth) The use of glass bottles in pharmacies dates from 1600s but they became popular in mid to late 1700s. Early poison bottles were blue. The color green became widely adopted in mid 1800s. The earliest labels were usually engraved or painted on the bottles. In England, by the end of 1800, the bottles were moulded with recessed panels and curved rectangular glass labels with mitered corners were cemented into the recess. The label area on this bottle ... moreis not recessed and it looks(particularly the undamaged left edge) that the label was painted onto the bottle. The label is rectangular with mitered corners painted in gold leaf with red rim and black lettering"TINCT IODINE Tr" I think that the bottle most likely predates 1880's but is later then 1860. The bottle is unmarked on the bottom. The bottom is slightly convex, there are three seams visible on the smooth shoulders of the bottle. The stopper is ground on the sides and bottom and fits the opening of the bottle very well providing a good seal and is easy to remove and reinsert. The sides of the bottle are ribbed all around, except for the label area which is smooth and protrudes above the grooves but is almost even with the ridges. UP FOR SALE! Large Vintage Antique Green Glass Patterned Apothecary Jar with Ground Glass Lid Measures about 11" in height with lid and about 18" around. It has about a 5.75" diameter at bottom of jar with a 4" diameter opening. Looks really nice.The lid has one chip near the top edge- see photos 6& 12. The jar& lid may have some minor roughness where the lid& jar meet. This is mostly where it is frosted/ground glass. Though the roughness is not noticeable and does not affect the use or beauty of this jar. Needs light cleaning. I have other apothecary jars for sale if interested. Rare White Label Emerald Green Apothecary Pharmacy Bottle
An unusual bottle as the majority of these have red labels. Original stopper is stuck so it still has original contents. Height is 7 inches. Was blown in a three part mould which also makes it different. Most have two mould seams, this one has three from shoulder to base of neck, also has a smooth pontil. Label is excellent and bottle is undamaged.

Vintage Apothecary Pharmacy Green Jar "G.W. Wiley Ltd."
This is a large. Vintage apothecary/pharmacy jar. It measures approximately 10 3/4" tall and 5" in diameter. It is green glass- there is no lid. There are 2 labels on it: The top label can be clearly read: Lung and Chest Tablets. The lower, main red& gold label has somewhat deteriorated, but can still be partially read. It appears to read"G.W. Wil(e?y Ltd. Manufacturing Confectioners 250& 252 Yorkshire St and Haynes St Rochdale. This label is very frail and flakes off quite easily. I can feel 2 little flea bites around the mouth of the jar- there are no cracks or chips elsewhere. I have made no attempt to clean this jar.
