The mouth or opening of the jar measures 2 1/4 inches across. The jar itself is in very good condition with no breaks, no chips, maybe some light small scratches. The inside rim of the jar has 1 small chip and a couple super tiny fleabites. The label is in good shape with no cracking, but what looks like some light fading or discoloring. The ornate fancy lid to the jar is also in very good shape with 1 small nick on the upper part that fits inside the jar, and some tiny fleabites. Antique Store Display -Large Mercury Glass Apothecary Jar- Rare, Perhaps Unique!
Offered is this very large apothecary jar. 15 1/4 inches tall to top of lid. 6 1/2 inches wide at base; about 4 3/4 inches in the other d imen sion. I am guessing this was part of a store display at a drugst ore around the turn of the century. The m e rcury coating(silvering) was applied inside the jar and then painted over with a red paint. This piece is in fabul ous vintage condition. The glass b ottle is without cracks or chips. Though has a few ai r bubbles in the glass from early manufacturing processes. The lid was ground on the outside to fit perfectly in the round opening. There is a little roughness on the inside edge of the lid and a few chips on the in side of th at lid edge. But overall, is also in wonderful vintage condition. The inside surface has been scratched th rough in many places on the bottle tho ugh these marks really ... moreadd to the antiqueness of the piece. The lid has no scratches in the silvering. Though some speckles from oxidation of the metal as seen also in the bottle. It was difficult to photograph because of its reflectivity. But please examine photos to complete the description. The red in the photos is a reflection. Not the inside paint showing through. The surface is silvery all over with freckles all over and several scratches as previous ly mention ed. Very Large Antique Apothecary / Chemist Jar 10 1/4" x 5 1/2" RARE 2 1/2 Liter
I have not seen another one of these advertised. It is a larger bottle fat and wide which would make a good ship in the bottle piece. The bottom has a high kicked up imprinted 2 1/2 and I think it is a 2 1/2 liter. The top has crude glass and there are stretched glass lines in the neck. It has some scratching and although I tried to clean it. I was not very successful. Additional photos are always available upon request. Any imperfections which are obvious to me are commented on. Here we have an early ~ DAKOTA APOTHECARY JAR IN A RARE 17" SIZE ~ we recently acquired out of a private estate. There was an old note inside that states this JAR WAS USED TO DISPLAY DRUGS BY THE UPJOHN CO AT THE COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION IN CHICAGO 1893. We could not find any other examples that were this large. And believe that it was actually made for an exhibit at the 1893 Worlds Fair. This apothecary jar measures 17 inches tall by 9 inches across" in the middle" and it weighs an amazing 9 1/2 pounds. It is in very nice condition with only a few little chips around the ground edge of the stopper. The top rim has a few tiny little flea bites" not bad" and the base does not have and chips or damage. Beautiful old huge glass apothecary or store jar with glass lid. It is in wonderful condition without damage and is 9" high. 7 1/2" at the base and 5" at the opening. The imperfections are all in the making and give a delightful appearance to the best example in my collection; the rim is irregular and tilts slightly; the thickness of the base varies from one side to the other; the base is out of round at one location which I tried to photograph; many swirls and bubbles in the glass. I have always wondered if the lid is original to the jar. It is old and fits but the texture of the glass seems slightly different. The lid also has an extremely small nick on the edge. HUGE Rare 1894 Antique Venz Candy Holland Glass Apothecary Counter Display Jar
A must have addition for the collector of antique apothecary jars. Super rare and hard to find. Wonderful large. Antique glass apothecary jar from Venz chocolates and confectionaries Holland. In superb, beautiful condition for age(circa 1894)very light roughness on the bottom of ground lid, which from all appearances is from the manufacturing process of the glass. One tiny chip on inner stopper, as noted in photo#4, and a small, miniscule fleabite on the bottom of stopper. Both of these spots are only mentioned for accuracy as it is very difficult to spot them, and in no way can be seen with the lid on. I have not washed this piece, preferring to leave that to the buyer if they choose. There are loads of wonderful controlled air bubbles(please not the one on the bottom) and other old glass imperfections. Embossed in the glass, on the bottom, ... moreis Venz Holland. The bottom glass, along the rim, is ground glass. Measures approx. an impressive 18" tall with the bottom diameter being 7.5" The jar slightly tapers as it goes up. Below is a little information on the history of Venz from their website. In the year 1890 is when the history of Venz begins. A man named Hendrik de Vries opens a wholesale in chocolate and confectionary. Four years later in 1894. His 2nd son named Gerard is born. The name Venz is born then too, Vries and Sons translates to Vries EN Zonen in Dutch. As soon as Gerard reaches the age of 15. He starts to work with his dad. He is mainly occupied with the production process. Things are going well for the company and in 1928 they already have 4 locations where the products are produced. They then decided they wanted everything under one roof. In 1930 the factory was opened in this city of Vaassen. In the factory they are only producing confectionary such as lollipops and tablets. A couple of years later they also started to make chocolate bars, pralines and such made. Antique Smithsonian Museum Specimen Jar Approximate Height(inches) To Top: 10.5 To Lip: 10 To Shoulder: 8 Approximate Diameter(inches) At Base: 4.5. Glass Lid does not fit perfectly. I recently acquired a large collection of these jars ranging from 3-6” tall and from 1.5-3.5” in diameter. All the jars are unmarked but originally came from the Smithsonian Museum in DC and were most likely made in the early 1900’s. They are all hand blown glass and many have little glass hooks on the underside of the block top glass lids allowing specimen to be hung inside the jars. I will be listing these jars individually and in small lots in the coming weeks. You are bidding on the pictures jar/lot. I tried to take good pictures so condition could accurately be judged. Each jar is unique and even similar sizes vary slightly from one jar to the next. Jars ... morewere handmade and are very old and they may include small flea bites and imperfections in the glass. Antique Porcelain Apothecary Jar Set of Two Gold Gilt Wet Medicine Rare Ca. 1890
Up for auction we have this antique pair of porcelain Apothecary Jars for wet medicine. I have not been able to find to many like this and think they are kind of scarce. Overall condition is pretty good since these things were used. One lid has a unfinished chip repair on the lid and on the other lid has one point missing from the inside lid flange. It does have some gilt lose but only really on the finial. There is mold line on the inside of the bases but are definitely in the making and glazed over and don't go through. Each one measures 4 1/4" in diameter and 9 1/4" tall. I would date these to the 1890's but could be even earlier. They would make a great addition to a collection.
