Offered for sale is an original English oak school desk from the 1920s. Not for toddlers. This desk was designed for students in late elementary/high school, and can readily accommodate any adult. It measures 32.5" high x 26" wide x 36" long. It's constructed of rock-hard English oak, and has a folding seat, and a lift-top desk with ample space underneath. The joinery is a beautiful dovetail construction. The desk is currently lined with removable black felt. This style of desk was immensely popular in England after WW1, primarily because of the development of rolled iron tubing.see pics. We have meticulously restored this desk, but intentionally left the original inkwell stains, and the carved names from almost 100 years ago. Antique Roll Top Desk. Circa 1920. Condition is excellent. It has a few areas that need some attention. We would use furniture polish but it probably needs a proper cleaning to wake up the wood. There are a few specks of paint on the right side. Again with a proper cleaning this can address this. The Only major defect is small burn mark on desk portion. I took many photos so what you see it what the desk has. There are 2 drawers on the shelf that were added and not part of the desk. That is why they don't match. It has been displayed in each of our homes for over 50 years. It was always stored on the main floor. Never in the basement or garage. It was cleaned and polished on a fairly regular basis. It has not dried out. We have been using it over the last few years as a computer desk. The second photo was taken by me of is of the original ... moreowner in 1959. Offered is a ONCE IN A LIFETIME PIECE. This desk is an exceptional piece of Americana handcrafted between 1910-1920 by a prison inmate in the Florida state prison system for a close relative and passed down through the generations until today. I purchased the desk from the great grandaughter of the original owner in Daytona Beach. Florida. I did not ask who in the family had actually made the desk in prison. The owners had it placed in the entrance foyer in their home with an antique lamp. This desk is commonly refered to a"Prison Art" Tramp or Folk Art" and consists of more than 20,000 matchsticks carefully and lovingly inlaid to create distinctive lines and divisions in an otherwise monotonous and repetitive assemblage. The burnt matchstick tips create the design and lines. The accents are in geometric diamonds polished and ... moreinlaid. The desk is very sturdy and the legs consist of pieces of pine glued and hammered together and the frame is constructed of polished plywood with careful attention to exposing the most attractive grain patterns.The inmates used only materials that were available in the prison. The entire desk is covered and sealed in heavy clear varnish. MADE WITH GREAT LOVE. This piece took approximately 4000 hours to complete at a cost of nearly $36,000 at today's minimum wage. Unfortunately, I can't remember the manufacturers name, but you might be able to tell by looking at the pictures. I looked it over and couldn't find any labels or markings. I love the little chair. The fully functional brass hardware and triple banister post back. Coupled with the corkscrew design for raising and lowering the chair height is such a clever and inventive design. It is also very strong and sturdy! They just don't make chairs this durable any more! You can truly feel the history when you see this set. It is a great little set. The desks roll top is fully functional and there are little cubby cubicles inside for storage. There are 2 smoothly sliding drawers with a skeleton key type lock. No key though. The desk and chair both have the appropriate normal wear and tear marks from the last almost 100 years. But they both are in pretty good shape considering they was used by children. This originally a school teachers rolltop desk was eventually usedby my grandparents Long Beach autobody shop used as an office desk during the 60s 70's and 80's.
