The flame mahogany looks incredible. With a rich complexion and a pronounced grain that are sure to complement any setting. Each drawer is adorned with elegant solid brass pulls and features dovetailed joints. The writing surface is inlaid with rich brown leather bordered by gold tooling-which was replaced during a recent restoration that also included a new coat of hand-rubbed wax. In total, this desk features three drawers and two cabinets on one side, with seven standard drawers and a file drawer on the other. Conveniently this desk disassembles quite easily: like all pedestal desks, the top simply rests securely on the two pedestals. Some of the surfaces show some minor wear marks, particularly on the feet, but they are very minor indeed, so overall condition is excellent, especially for a desk from this period. Condition: Used Location: Novato, United States I am not an expert but an antique furniture appraiser looked at this piece recently and stated this is a unique desk that he's never seen one quite ... morelike it. It was likely made in the early 1900's. Made of oak. And has a spooncarved front. There are no identifying markings. It is in excellent shape and it has the original finish. Brass fittings show a bit of tarnish but should clean up easily with a little TLC. Three of the posts on the brass rail at the top are loose but can be easily secured with a little bit of attention. One of the rail ends is stripped so that will need to be secured as well. Otherwise this piece is ready for your home. I would be happy to provide more detailed photos if requested. I hate to part with such a beautiful and unique item but we no longer have the room and it just doesn't fit our decor. The dimensions are 40 1/2” tall its tallest point. 33 1/2“ wide at its widest point at the base, and 19” deep when closed,and 34“ deep when opened. Local pickup only.

When ansd if you find them the difference in quality in this piece is heads and shoulders above the rest. First of all this piece stands 48 high x 43 wide x 21 deep This piece is heads and shoulders above any other"Butler's desks" that I and others have personally even. The piece id very old, early 1800's when the holes for the hardware were carved in, and the other tool markings are just as primitive, although the workmanship is fantastic. On this piece, the veneer is all in really great shape! Ther'es no\bubbling, or chipping like you would see in much later pieces. even veneer piece made as late as the 1970's have shown tremendous damage from wear ... moreor even daily polishing. The set up for this piece is like this; Two side by side drawers across the very top, then, one single oversized drawer front, which opens and"drops down" to act as a writing surface, by first pulling the entire panel straight out like a drawer, then pressing both buttons in on the spring loaded latch located on both ends of the panel) exposing all the little compartments and drawers inside, and the backside of the front panel which drops down has a soft, recessed fabric on it for writing which has been left in the original worn condition for the antique value. The interior of the desk thus reveals a series of drawers and a satinwood-striped cabinet door that opens to reveal yet another drawer. Brass pulls adorn each of the exterior drawers, which feature hand-cut dovetails and a key is included which locks the drawers. Although this bureau or"cylinder desk" remains very sturdy and astonishingly beautiful, it has sustained some surface wear, most of which is extremely minimal given the great age of this piece. Both sides have begun developing small wood separations, as has the desktop, while the very top of the bureau has sustained significant scratches. One of the pulls has also lost its ring. A master cabinetmaker tells us. If this desk was used in a school, it was at the head of the class. The wood is flame brown mahogany with chestnut on the fronts of the drawers. The Cavalier Furniture company started out as the Tennessee Furniture company. And became the Cavalier Furniture Company in 1938. We are unsure of the age of this desk but looking at the construction we would estimate it was most likely made in the 1940s. The styling is American Revival. This desk carries the makers plaque mounted on the inside of the bottom left drawer. The desk measures 46 inches wide. By 18 1/4 inches deep, and 29 3/4 tall. Condition- The overall condition of this desk is good. The joinery on the drawers is tight, and the drawers pull smoothly. The top of the desk looks to have been stripped, and there are a ... morefew groove depressions(not scratches) in the top. The grain could be raised to eliminate these grooves. The finish is a bit uneven, but I like the character it adds to the piece. I suppose the desk could be refinished if need be. This is a well made little desk. With some classic styling. There are three shelves on the upper bookcase with original glass door. It has four drawers below the drop off desk. It is in excellent condition. Everything in its original state. There is one key for the bookcase. This has been in my mother's home for as long as I can remember. There are no labels on the back. The style, the quality of workmanship, the materials, are clearly of the highest quality. Please see picture number 6 for a close up of the underlying wood grain, which appears to be mahogany(though walnut is not an impossibility) The framed glass top. Reveals 2 separators with gilded scrolling, providing areas for 3 locked drawers. The locks are brand new and not original. This piece would make a jewelry or fine fashion arts display case of pure perfection for any shop featuring an upscale shabby chic style. A nearly identical piece is shown in the June 2013 New York Times Style Magazine on pages 86-87 STYLE: The ebonized mahogany and carved and gilt molding identify ... morethis piece as an interpretation of neoclassical Louis XVI style favored by Maison Jansen and European early 20th century royalty and the Kennedy White House. The republic style legs place it in the 1920-30's era. WORKMANSHIP: The intricate carving. Gilded moldings, and ebonizing are of days-gone-by and simply unavailable in today's market. Though the legs appear somewhat fragile supporting the weight of the overall table, they are solidly attached with heavy metal flanges and grommets. The drawers show the dovetail joints(pictures 9 and 10) All joining of the piece are solid and exhibit NO separation. MATERIALS: Though wood identification is difficult with painted furniture. There are enough small areas with worn paint to show the underlying wood. This is unquestionably a very hard wood, and given the reputation and standards of Maison Jansen, this is almost certainly mahogany. Vintage Antique Mahogany Rolltop Desk by Derby Desk Company
This Roll-top desk is a Fine antique. Solid mahogany manufactured by Derby Desk Company Boston, Massachusetts. The desk lock is by Corbin cabinet lock company with a patent date Dec 16, 1884. I think the desk is approximately 1920, but I've gotten that from looking at other desks and growing up with other antique furniture. The size is 50" wide by 33 1/2" deep by 50 1/2" tall. It has the S type tambour roll. After the roll top is open. The side panel guides have locks that when released, allow the hinged sides to swing out of the way. All the cubbyholes, drawers and hardware are original and in good condition. The desk has raised panel sides and back including back of kneehole, with none missing. HISTORY: I bought the desk from a Mr. Harmon in Phoenix 1998 and have a receipt in the desk that Mr. Harmon bought it from his ... morefather Nathaniel P. Harmon in April 1980 in Jaffrey New Hampshire. The senior Mr. Harmon bought the desk from the original owner 40 years previous. Who was from Boston, Massachusetts. He left a stogie burn on the top of the desk, which somebody partially rubbed out, and now it's called a character mark. I thought of doing an overall staining, touch up and polishing, but decided not to, pending what a buyer might want to do if anything. This desk has been in a smoke free house since 1998.
