Description: This listing is for a ... moreChippendale Period Slant Front Desk circa 1770-80. Salem Massachusetts, in the manner of John Chipman(b. 1746-1819) It features solid Cuban Mahogany case, each side crafted of a single solid plank, through-dovetailed at the top and dovetailed at the bottom. The slant front lid features an original keyhole escutcheon over what appears to be the original brass lock, falling onto arms that slide out with brass knobs- one original, the left one replaced. The open writing surface is clean, with what appear to be two original brass hinges, though curious patching is noted below flaking each hinge. Above the writing surface is a collection of nine small drawers, the centermost shell carved, each with brass knobs, below which a gallery of six pigeon holes rest in perfect symmetry. The case has four graduated drawers. Each of which feature period bail pull brass hardware flanking a replaced lock with original brass keyhole escutcheon. The drawers are hand dovetailed front and back, the front dovetails hidden behind applied cockbead molding. The drawers are yellow pine secondaries, the bottom being deeply chamfered along the perimeter to rabbet into the frame. They slide easily in and out of the case over replaced drawer runners, the drawer dividers running into the sides behind a mahogany facade, effectively hiding what are probably dovetail joints. The back of the case has all original backboards, though many nails are replaced. The molded apron features a carved shell drop down medallion in the center that mirrors the design of the middle drawer. The case rests over scroll cut bracket feet, each with an incredible flowing design in the manner of John Chipman. We do not believe the desk was executed in the shop of John Chipman. As his cases will typically feature exposed dovetail drawer dividers in the Newport manner, and the pidgeon-hole gallery will regularly featur

From research I have done on the Internet I believe that this is an antique mahogany Chippendale style secretary bookcase with drop down desk and claw and ball feet. There are three shelves on the upper bookcase with original glass door. It has four drawers below the drop off desk. It is in excellent condition. Everything in its original state. There is one key for the bookcase. This has been in my mother's home for as long as I can remember. There are no labels on the back. The only problem that I see is the center decoration on top is loose. There are no other outstanding problems. This is local pick-up only or you may arrange for shipping. I am not certain about the origins of this desk but it is beautiful. The only flaws are 1. The brass rail on the top is just sitting there and needs to be glued down. And 2. There are some minor scratches. See the pictures for details on both. I am not sure about the age, who made it or what wood it is made from, but it looks like mahogany. The wood is mahogany which has a lovely grain and great color. Some of the more striking features of this desk include the Hepplewhite style pierced brass handles and the ball and ... morethe shaped legs which end in ball and claw feet. The top is mostly covered in a great looking brown leather. Leather is the ideal writing surface. Far superior to other materials. This leather has been gold tooled around the edges. Finally, this ball and claw foot writing desk has a fully finished back. Having a fully finished back is a really important feature because you are not forced to place the desk up against a wall. This opens up a whole slew of decorating options. This writing desk is in very good condition. There are flaws in the wood and joinery near the two front legs. The back, and on the top. The ones on the top are very hard to see and we have photographed the front legs to give you an example. We feel these flaws add character and authenticity to the desk. It is a very sturdy and structurally sound desk that will serve for many years to come. Late 1800. Early 1900's Chippendale style Mahogany Partners Desk. The Legs are curved like a Chippendale style with a Ball and Clawfeet. This desk has been in my family since 1911, it is probably earlier. This desk has drawers on each side, however only one side opens. There is some damage on the sides and legs to the desk, please see pictures. The major flaw is a split piece holding the left rear leg of the desk, this has been poorly repaired, but all the original wood is still there for future repair. Please see photo. This desk glows when polished, it is a beautiful piece. The drawers lock and comes with the keys. The desk has a dark stain finish even though some of the photos came out lighter because of the lighting when I took photos. There are antique brass finish handles and hardware on the drawers- one handle is missing. The traditional drop leaf desk/tray and its mechanisms work without problems. The two front legs are ball and claw style- both have some of the finish chipped off of them. Overall, the desk is heavy duty and in sturdy condition with minor wear and tear. This estate item is at least 100 years old. Purchased by current owner in 1969. It stands 79.5" tall. The bottom section is 16" deep. 27" deep with open hatch. The top section is 8.5" deep with shelves that are 8" deep. The reticulated wood/ glass doors are 14" x 26" The serpentine drawers are 13" deep. It features four Eagles Talons or claws for feet. This desk has numerous highly detailed and beautifully crafted features: kiln dried and bent wood, brass hardware, 4 large drawers, a center storage compartment, 2 secret slide out storage compartments and pull out supports for the top when it's flipped down.
