Art Nouveau Antique 1900 Inlaid Mahogany Secretary Desk. €” — A lovely secretary desk from about 1900 has graceful Art Nouveau period curves and subtle inlaid marquetry. On top is a brass filigree book gallery. The drop front has a working lock. Inside are cubicles and a tiny drawer. A lower drawer is curved and has original pulls and hand cut dovetail joints on this American made furniture. The lustrous finish is in excellent condition. Beautiful Antique Mahogany English Inlaid Desk
You are bidding on a beautiful Antique Mahogany English Inlaid Desk. Unsure exactly how old this desk is but I have been told that it is possibly from the mid to late 1800's. There is such great detail all around this desk. On the top part of the desk there are two doors which slide open and closed. Which resembles an accordian. When the doors are open there are small pull out drawers and compartments to put pins, tacks, ink, letters, ect. The desk also has two pull out drawers on the bottom front of the desk. On the pull out drawers there are two handles for each drawer and each handle has a"hand painted porcelain piece" There are two areas that may need very little tlc. There are 2 seperate key holds which one used to lock the top two doors and the other locks the bottom pull out drawers. The lip of the desk extends so that ... moreone is able to write letters. When the lip of the desk is extended you can see the key hole just below where the two compartment doors meet. This locks the top. The lower part of the desk has two drawers each with it's own key hole for locking. As I mentioned. There are two area that may need a bit of tlc. The first area is in the front of the desk there are 2 doors, which easily slides open and closed. On both ends of the doors they are missing the edge of the door, which had a small latch in the middle. When the lip of the desk extends and both doors are closed they were able to be locked by the key hole which is located just underneath the lip of the desk. The second area that needs tlc is that one of the bottom drawers needs to have a ringlet placed back on. There would be no need to purchase the ringlet due to it being inside the desk. The ringlet came off during a move. I picked up this item at an estate sale in San Franscisco. California and it is a gorgeous piece of furniture. This is beautiful and very intricate in detail; it is an early 1900's genuine mahogany Hepplewhite style tambour secretary desk. It has burled mahogany. And has a tooled leather top with ethereal gold leaf detailing. This desk features a warm reddish-brown finish, six open letter cubbies and one cubby with a door. There are three smaller drawers with dovetail joinery, oval brass pulls, and four square tapered fluted legs with caster feet. Recessed front tambour doors roll in from the sides to hide the letter cubbies and cabinet. The exquisite marquetry work includes ribbons and garlands, medallions, band inlay throughout and shield escutcheon. The main storage drawer is generous in size. This amazing piece was a gift to my Grandmother when she graduated from U of M in 1920. I had it evaluated by an antiques expert who indicated it was likely made around 1900. Offered is a ONCE IN A LIFETIME PIECE. This desk is an exceptional piece of Americana handcrafted between 1910-1920 by a prison inmate in the Florida state prison system for a close relative and passed down through the generations until today. I purchased the desk from the great grandaughter of the original owner in Daytona Beach. Florida. I did not ask who in the family had actually made the desk in prison. The owners had it placed in the entrance foyer in their home with an antique lamp. This desk is commonly refered to a"Prison Art" Tramp or Folk Art" and consists of more than 20,000 matchsticks carefully and lovingly inlaid to create distinctive lines and divisions in an otherwise monotonous and repetitive assemblage. The burnt matchstick tips create the design and lines. The accents are in geometric diamonds polished and ... moreinlaid. The desk is very sturdy and the legs consist of pieces of pine glued and hammered together and the frame is constructed of polished plywood with careful attention to exposing the most attractive grain patterns.The inmates used only materials that were available in the prison. The entire desk is covered and sealed in heavy clear varnish. MADE WITH GREAT LOVE. This piece took approximately 4000 hours to complete at a cost of nearly $36,000 at today's minimum wage.
