Made from mahogany and walnut. The secretary is solid and strong with no loose joints. Sits on large ball and claw feet, 3 bottom serpentine drawers with decorative brass pull handles, drop front desk with six pigeon holes and a small drawer and storage above the small drawer. Hutch has two doors with glass and decorative detail and 2 shelves. There is no breaks, chips or cracks to the glass. Comes with the original key to lock the top and bottom. This is a one piece secretary and measures 78" tall counting the finale, 30 1/2" wide and 17" deep. There is some lacquer loss on the finial and a small amount on the doors. Overall great condition. Only part of the paper tag is on the back so maker is unknown. As with all antiques including vintage or used items expect to find some signs of wear, use, nicks, rubs or scratches and age wear to finish that is common to all antiques due to age and use. You will need to make your own shipping arrangements with a shipper of your choice or(PICK UP IS ALWAYS WELCOME. I might suggest Herberts Transport Sheri or Darren at 586-524-7701 or 586-709-0282 for a shipping option. Herberts Transport will blanket wrap and does a good job and very reasonable. Description: This listing is for a ... moreChippendale Period Slant Front Desk circa 1770-80. Salem Massachusetts, in the manner of John Chipman(b. 1746-1819) It features solid Cuban Mahogany case, each side crafted of a single solid plank, through-dovetailed at the top and dovetailed at the bottom. The slant front lid features an original keyhole escutcheon over what appears to be the original brass lock, falling onto arms that slide out with brass knobs- one original, the left one replaced. The open writing surface is clean, with what appear to be two original brass hinges, though curious patching is noted below flaking each hinge. Above the writing surface is a collection of nine small drawers, the centermost shell carved, each with brass knobs, below which a gallery of six pigeon holes rest in perfect symmetry. The case has four graduated drawers. Each of which feature period bail pull brass hardware flanking a replaced lock with original brass keyhole escutcheon. The drawers are hand dovetailed front and back, the front dovetails hidden behind applied cockbead molding. The drawers are yellow pine secondaries, the bottom being deeply chamfered along the perimeter to rabbet into the frame. They slide easily in and out of the case over replaced drawer runners, the drawer dividers running into the sides behind a mahogany facade, effectively hiding what are probably dovetail joints. The back of the case has all original backboards, though many nails are replaced. The molded apron features a carved shell drop down medallion in the center that mirrors the design of the middle drawer. The case rests over scroll cut bracket feet, each with an incredible flowing design in the manner of John Chipman. We do not believe the desk was executed in the shop of John Chipman. As his cases will typically feature exposed dovetail drawer dividers in the Newport manner, and the pidgeon-hole gallery will regularly featur

From research I have done on the Internet I believe that this is an antique mahogany Chippendale style secretary bookcase with drop down desk and claw and ball feet. There are three shelves on the upper bookcase with original glass door. It has four drawers below the drop off desk. It is in excellent condition. Everything in its original state. There is one key for the bookcase. This has been in my mother's home for as long as I can remember. There are no labels on the back. The only problem that I see is the center decoration on top is loose. There are no other outstanding problems. This is local pick-up only or you may arrange for shipping. The two front legs are ball and claw style- both have some of the finish chipped off of them. Overall, the desk is heavy duty and in sturdy condition with minor wear and tear. This estate item is at least 100 years old. Purchased by current owner in 1969. It stands 79.5" tall. The bottom section is 16" deep. 27" deep with open hatch. The top section is 8.5" deep with shelves that are 8" deep. The reticulated wood/ glass doors are 14" x 26" The serpentine drawers are 13" deep. It features four Eagles Talons or claws for feet. This is a lovely small size desk perfect for that smaller space. Commonly called a butlers desk this piece measures approx. 20" wide x 14" x 35-5/8" high. There are two drawers on the front of the desk each measuring approx. 18" wide x 2-1/2" high. The interior has two drawers with cubbies for great storage. I believe this piece is mahogany there is a lovely burl pattern in the wood on the flap of the desk. The drawers are made with dovetail construction. This Winthrop slant top ball and claw secretary desk dates from the 1940s. It has all the original brass Chippendale hardware on the front. As you open up the breadboard writing surface. Automatic extensions come out to support the writing lid and it also exposes a wonderful multi-cubby hole section with 3 deep drawers. This interior has a carved door storage area and two cleverly designed units behind multi turn spindle posts. When I was little my parents always used to hide things in those drawers and it took us years to figure out where they were. This desk was made by Maddox out of Buffalo. NY they were well known for their high quality and stylish furniture. It is simply stunning in its Ebony/black finish. It is large, yet perfect as a multi tasking piece of furniture for smaller homes or apartments. Drop draw front open/closes fine ... moreand gives you a large work surface which when closed this desk is perfect for a small space as it is slimmer than most. When drop front is down it measures 31 1/2" deep. Giving you a large writing/work area. Measures: 31 1/2" long x 10" deep. Up for auction: Very nice ladies' desk/secretary. Ball and claw feet. Slant front that pulls out( see pics)I do have the key for the drawer. I do not have the main key. Condition: Overall condition is very good. One of the ball and claw feet has some cosmetic damage.see pics of each foot. Everything is original but I am not sure about the interior draw section.this could have been added later. This particular section is darker and more of a cherry color. My husband and I retrieved this from an auction years ago. We are downsizing and have just put this in a nearby antique booth.
