I tried to capture the writing in a picture, but could only get the first part of the name. The name stands out the most. The rest of the writing, I believe would be where the owner lived and the year is much fainter. It looks like Maggie C Farr(something) something) 1876 or 1896. The box measures about 11 ¼” x 7 3/4” x 3 ½” closed) Opened and lying flat the desk measures about 16” long. The inside bottom felt writing surface that lifts up is tight and strong while the top felt writing surface that lifts up is wiggly, but still very much intact. Very nice old lap desk. It measures 16" by 9" by 4 1/2" The exotic wood veneer(possibly ... moremahogany) has a very dramatic and variable grain that ranges from amber to black. The exquisite top features a radiant Mother of Pearl Cartouche( 2" by 1" with no engravings or markings) It has eight Mother of Pearl Discs that are positioned near the corners. The discs are connected by pewter'stringing lines' to form two rectangles on the top. I believe that the two shortest pewter'stringing lines' on the ends of the inner rectangle may be replacement pieces. There are also four Mother of Pearl discs on the front of the box. Connected by pewter'stringing lines' These also form a rectangle. The escutcheon has an inlay that is a bone color. But does not appear to be Mother of Pearl. The top opens to reveal a green velvet fabric-covered writing slope which appears to be original. There are five separate compartments for ink wells. Nibs, wax, stamps etc. There is also a removable concave pen tray with storage space beneath it. The green velvet-covered'top partition' pulls down with a black grosgrain tab to expose a storage compartment. The storage compartment measures 14 1/4" by 7 1/4" For stationary. The green velvet-covered'bottom partition' pulls open with a black grosgrain tab to expose a storage compartment. This storage compartment measures 14 1/4" by 5" For letters. The hinges and fittings are brass and there is a flush brass handle on each end of the box. It has keys to lock both the desk and bookcase. The desk has two small drawers. Filing sections with"cathedral" style design and original"teardrop" hardware. There are three wide drawers for storage beneath the desk. The top bookcase has leaded, stained glass doors(no chips or cracks) with gold accents and adjustable shelves. Up for your consideration is a beautiful antique oak writing desk. It is in the Mission or Arts and Crafts design. We have had this for y ears in our home. It is quite sturdy. The measurem e nts are 26" deep x 38" wi de x 29 3/4" tall. The front drops down and in side is a writing platform w ith an inkwell hole. Pencil rest, and cubbies in t he back for en v elopes. Etc. To the right is a drawer which actually comes completely out. The hinges have been replaced on this front piece as well as t he glass kno bs. There is an old keyhole and the lock seems to still be intact. However we do not have a key. My husband had his computer on this desk and be cause the underside of the des k is open. He was able to keep the keyboard on the pull-out platform, and the wires fit right throu gh. The wood is oak and is in beautiful condition ... morefor being old. One of a kind. Very good condition woman's writing desk from Mexico, circa 1900. This one of a kind piece has no screws or glue, and fits like a puzzle! This desk was brought to the United States circa 1970 from Durango, Mexico by my Grandmother. She in turn received it from her piano teacher years before! For your consideration is a Mission Style mahogany slant front writing desk made by Novelty Wood Works(1897-1912) in Union City. PA. The desk is 30.25" wide, 37" high, and 14.5" deep(from drawer) When opened, the writing surface is 27.5" from the floor. It features original brass hardware, a single pull-out drawer beneath the desk, and six compartments inside to store letter, bills, etc. I estimate the age of this piece to be approximately 110 years. It is in good to very good condition as indicated in the Condition description. There are some light scratches and cup marks as pictured. Here is an antique writing desk with the flip up top. The desk pulls out when the top is open. This can be seen in image 5. It is in overall good shape with great patina. The desk can be used as is. Restored or as a garden table. This would also make a great computer desk. The photos show some of the areas that have scratches, scuffs or cracks. Images 5-7 show the measurements. Image 3 shows some damage to the top when the desk is closed. Image 4 shows that the leg has a piece missing. This is available for local pick-up only. For sale here is one of the more unique pieces from our furniture collection. A small antique drop leaf writing desk, made from solid mahogany, and in an elegant Arts& Crafts or Mission style. It features a single drawer, a small shelf/brace beneath, and cubby areas inside. We've never seen another like it. Especially made from solid mahogany throughout(even the drawer interior and back) and from the Mission/Craftsman style and era. It appears to be handmade, possibly by an individual craftsman, and bears no manufacturers marks. It's dimensions are 41"T x 30"W x 16"D. With the dropped leaf itself measuring 26W" x 13D" As far as condition goes. It is very solid and sturdy, and still has its original finish and hardware. A French Louis XVI Style Antique Writing Desk executed in solid fruitwood. Presumably Cherry, this piece was crafted during the first half of the 20th Century- this date could probably be further isolated with research into the Circular Crowned Fire Breathing Dragon brand impressed beneath the desk beside the"Made in France" brand. The broad leather top is tooled along the edges. The surface remaining in overall quite good condition despite years of use; it is framed in fruitwood edged by brass tubing, the corners of the frame ... morepinned with exposed pegs. The top projects over three drawers, these hand dovetailed with golden oak secondary woods in the sides, back and machine-chamfered bottom. The original key is retained, working the lock on the middle drawer quite effectively. Each corner of the frame is embellished with gilded ribbed rectangular panels over the legs. The desk rests over turned and tapered legs beneath round brass rings and terminating in capped brass ball feet. It is sturdy and stable. An absolutely perfect piece for regular functional use in a home office or home library. The fruitwood glows throughout with a deep well oxidized patina beneath a polished finish. Gorgeous details include: hide-away desk area. Extendable writing board, small drawer on top, large drawer beneath desk, and plenty of small cubbyholes. Made of either solid maple or walnut with matching veneers. There are noticeable surface scratches on the top(see two pictures) and there is a chip on the writing surface( see picture) Obviously the desk does have some cosmetic flaws but is very well built and is structurally sound.
