Very nice early secretary or Butler's Pantry measures approximately 81" H x 43" W x 21" D. Upper cabinet measures 38" W X 40" H x 10.5" D with 3 removable shelves. Bottom cabinet is 40" W x 18" H x 18.5" D with 1 shelf. Top drawer pulls out to reveal felt desk writing section. This section slides back to reveal hidden storage in the drawer. This piece has hand dovetailed drawers. The finish is the original which shows a nice patina. Shelves in the upper cabinet had original felt lining. There are some veneer chips typical of Empire pieces from this era. Mostly around the crown moulding and around the drawer fronts. Sold as is. Please ask questions. When ansd if you find them the difference in quality in this piece is heads and shoulders above the rest. First of all this piece stands 48 high x 43 wide x 21 deep This piece is heads and shoulders above any other"Butler's desks" that I and others have personally even. The piece id very old, early 1800's when the holes for the hardware were carved in, and the other tool markings are just as primitive, although the workmanship is fantastic. On this piece, the veneer is all in really great shape! Ther'es no\bubbling, or chipping like you would see in much later pieces. even veneer piece made as late as the 1970's have shown tremendous damage from wear ... moreor even daily polishing. The set up for this piece is like this; Two side by side drawers across the very top, then, one single oversized drawer front, which opens and"drops down" to act as a writing surface, by first pulling the entire panel straight out like a drawer, then pressing both buttons in on the spring loaded latch located on both ends of the panel) exposing all the little compartments and drawers inside, and the backside of the front panel which drops down has a soft, recessed fabric on it for writing which has been left in the original worn condition for the antique value. Obviously if one wasa to keep this piece and want to use it which could and should be done, this would be very easy to replace and it would bring back greatness to this piece. This is a Stunning solid Burled Maple and Mahogany Butlers Desk Chest of Drawers. It weighs approximately 250-300 pounds and measures 52” in height. 42 3/4” in width, and 21 ½”in depth. It features beautiful detailing and a deep rich patina. A large false drawer front drops to reveal a Burled Maple writing surface with six small drawers and a middle storage compartment all over three drawers flankled by twisted columns. I'm not sure of the date on this piece. I've had several antique dealers and professionals who looked at it and the concensus is between 1930-1950 possibly made in Ohio. I've been busy trying to get some good stuff in shop to try to jump-start sales and this is estate fresh from upstate New York. Anyway this is a score and I'm proud to offer this for your consideration. It is in outstanding condition has the proper key nice and straight. The finish is very good and has never been repaired. The drawer is dovetail crafted and I could not find a makers mark except the number on backside. No cigarette burns or water stains very clean and I truly like this a lot for both the condition and nice smaller size. We brought it into the restoration shop to hand strip(which takes a long time, but is well worth it to leave the patina or original color in the wood) hand sand meticulously throughout, stain the same factory color and applied multiple coats of hand rubbed lacquer until it builds up a beautiful semi glow lustrous finish such as this. It has the original glass, original triple adjustable shelves, we had to replace some of the center slats and the crest is original. Everything on this desk is original except for the exterior finish and the felt that we replaced. The cabinet dates from the 1860s era. We are fortunate enough to get one or two of these every year, but we scour the entire United States to obtain the rare and hard to find items such as this. This desk has gothic block pyramid columns down on the base with spoon carving on the incise carved and picture frame panel doors that open for a large space that probably had a shelf previous. This is a lovely small size desk perfect for that smaller space. Commonly called a butlers desk this piece measures approx. 20" wide x 14" x 35-5/8" high. There are two drawers on the front of the desk each measuring approx. 18" wide x 2-1/2" high. The interior has two drawers with cubbies for great storage. I believe this piece is mahogany there is a lovely burl pattern in the wood on the flap of the desk. The drawers are made with dovetail construction. I believe the top drawer repair was done many, many years ago. This dresser is what I would call an antique. It does have many signs of use. RARE TRUE BUBBLE GLASS GEORGIAN STYLED MAHOGANY BREAKFRONT WITH BUTLER'S DESK CIRCA 1920 Bay Colony Antiques is delighted to offer you this fabulous Circa 1920 Georgian/Federal styled mahogany two piece Bubble Glass Breakfront with nicely appointed Butler's Desk. We have several other fine Breakfronts in our inventory and actively hunt them as aggressively as we can. Finding true Bubble Glass specimen's has been extremely difficult. Most. Including one of our others, are convex formed glass specimens and unlike here with the big exaggerated Bubble Glass Lights(panes) A good amount of these are in the sunburst finish and we don't find those desirable with our clients. This is the one we've been after and we are thrilled to be selling it. It has a total of 28 lights that consist of Four huge ovals, Eight half ovals and Sixteen ... moretriangular lights. We note(and didn't even see it ourselves until we got it off site and back to the shop) two tiny cracks in two minor triangular lights. They are insignificant and probably caused by manufacturing. No major lights are damaged and that is the critical factor. This glass has to be heated and bent to form the true bubble effect and the bigger the bubble is made the more likelihood of its cracking. We have offered one very up close photo(sorry you caught us not cleaning the glass as carefully as we could) of what we are discussing here. Not to take up much more time discussing it but if it was a true issue this would not be sold on this sales platform and we would simply ship this off to auction. Here, we tell you everything. You deserve nothing less when buying by photographs. That is the difference between us and some auction sale. We can only imagine how many panes of glass cracked while the furniture maker was trying to complete each one of these. 16526 Antique Victorian Walnut Butler’s Secretary Desk - Civil War Era
We are pleased to be offering today this gorgeous Victorian oversize 107” tall butler’s walnut secretary desk that came in recently. We are always intrigued with these and they are always found in the old dark Civil War era finish which is kind of grungy and doesn’t show the walnut right. So. We brought it into the restoration shop to hand strip(which takes a long time, but is well worth it to leave the patina or original color in the wood) hand sand meticulously throughout, stain the same factory color and applied multiple coats of hand rubbed lacquer until it builds up a beautiful semi glow lustrous finish such as this. It has the original glass, original triple adjustable shelves, we had to replace some of the center slats and the crest is original. Everything on this desk is original except for the exterior finish and the felt that we ... morereplaced. The cabinet dates from the 1860s era. We are fortunate enough to get one or two of these every year, but we scour the entire United States to obtain the rare and hard to find items such as this. This desk has gothic block pyramid columns down on the base with spoon carving on the incise carved and picture frame panel doors that open for a large space that probably had a shelf previous. If the buyer would like us to put a shelf behind the doors, we will do so if you tell us at the time of purchase. The cabinet also features panel sides all the way up, which a cheap one would not as it would be plank sides, but this one is walnut all the way. There is Cornish molding all the way around the shapely two doors that open to reveal a triple shelf adjustable height interior, carved columns with diamond points for motifs and big leaves are carving in with dainty little cornices. The top of the cabinet has a double wide crown molding and a large center finial broken arch top. It doesn’t get much better than this.
