This is a turn of the century wood lap desk with some issues. It measures about 11-5/8" by 8" by 3-1/2" deep. The wood is probably walnut or mahogany and does have age wear- a solid box- both the cover and the bottom have splits as you can see in the photos- has the compartments- one of the small dividers is missing- not sure if the locking mechanism works as there is no key. The top has the most lovely design of flowers and outlining in coloured and textured pyrography- where the wood was decorated with hot tools to produce a raised and textured effect. This box has a rather Art Nouveau look to it. The box has a little drilled hole in the side of the base. Through which fine string or ribbon can be threaded and then pulled out beneath the top, but it can also be used as a standard box for holding paperclips or small items on a desk or dressing table. The item is nicely made and has an old paper label underneath which reads"Au Printemps" So I think this was orignally sold in France. Condition is overall very good. Ut there is some wear to the green varnished areas in the top design- but this is still a lovely and rare piece. If used as a string box. I feel this would be best suited to thin string, thread or twine, as shown in the picture- and will be included with the box- rather than thick string. Featuring a solid mahogany top with a molded edge, the front of the bureau plat has a long hand dovetailed drawer for storage, opening to reveal a solid golden oak interior. The keyhole escutcheon is probably the finest bronze mount on the desk, a piece that prominently features the rocaille movement around the fully functioning key and lock. The apron is shapely, the front and back mirroring the flow of the top with a slight inversion in the middle. The cabriole legs are formed with very fine gate, the tapering form nearly perfect in proportion to the table, each surmounted with an intense rocaille Gilt bronze mount with the"C" form featured actively as it curls over the entire knee- a thin reed of gilt bronze continues to flow down the leg into the beautiful Gilt bronze sabot mounts with curling toes. The top half of the desk has two tambour-covered sections containing three pigeon holes and a small drawer. There is also a locked center section. Sorry- no key! The lower part has a fold out. The measurem e nts are 26" deep x 38" wi de x 29 3/4" tall. The front drops down and in side is a writing platform w ith an inkwell hole. Pencil rest, and cubbies in t he back for en v elopes. Etc. To the right is a drawer which actually comes completely out. The hinges have been replaced on this front piece as well as t he glass kno bs. There is an old keyhole and the lock seems to still be intact. However we do not have a key. My husband had his computer on this desk and be cause the underside of the des k is open. He was able to keep the keyboard on the pull-out platform, and the wires fit right throu gh. The wood is oak and is in beautiful condition ... morefor being old. For sale here is one of the more unique pieces from our furniture collection. A small antique drop leaf writing desk, made from solid mahogany, and in an elegant Arts& Crafts or Mission style. It features a single drawer, a small shelf/brace beneath, and cubby areas inside. We've never seen another like it. Especially made from solid mahogany throughout(even the drawer interior and back) and from the Mission/Craftsman style and era. It appears to be handmade, possibly by an individual craftsman, and bears no manufacturers marks. It's dimensions are 41"T x 30"W x 16"D. With the dropped leaf itself measuring 26W" x 13D" As far as condition goes. It is very solid and sturdy, and still has its original finish and hardware. Stamped"Made in France" Item# 130006OLV15 This is an outstanding find for any serious interior designer or anyone passionate about Neoclassical forms true to the spirit of Louis XVI furnishings. A French Louis XVI Style Antique Writing Desk executed in solid fruitwood. Presumably Cherry, this piece was crafted during the first half of the 20th Century- this date could probably be further isolated with research into the Circular Crowned Fire Breathing Dragon brand impressed beneath the desk beside the"Made in France" brand. The broad leather top is tooled along the edges. The surface remaining in overall quite good condition despite years of use; it is framed in fruitwood edged by brass tubing, the corners of the frame ... morepinned with exposed pegs. The top projects over three drawers, these hand dovetailed with golden oak secondary woods in the sides, back and machine-chamfered bottom. The original key is retained, working the lock on the middle drawer quite effectively. Each corner of the frame is embellished with gilded ribbed rectangular panels over the legs. The desk rests over turned and tapered legs beneath round brass rings and terminating in capped brass ball feet. It is sturdy and stable. An absolutely perfect piece for regular functional use in a home office or home library. The fruitwood glows throughout with a deep well oxidized patina beneath a polished finish. French Louis XV Style Gilt Mounted Mahogany Bureau Plat Early 20th Century. Probably c. 1910-30 Item# 130008GQJ26 Crafted during the first years of the 20th Century. When fervor for antiques of the Louis XV taste were still at a remarkable high, this very attractive French Louis XV Bureau Plat was embellished with great effort. Featuring a solid mahogany top with a molded edge, the front of the bureau plat has a long hand dovetailed drawer for storage, opening to reveal a solid golden oak interior. The keyhole escutcheon is probably the finest bronze mount on the desk, a piece that prominently features the rocaille movement around the fully functioning key and lock. The apron is shapely, the front and back mirroring the flow of the top with a slight inversion in the middle. The cabriole legs are formed with very fine gate, the tapering form ... morenearly perfect in proportion to the table, each surmounted with an intense rocaille Gilt bronze mount with the"C" form featured actively as it curls over the entire knee- a thin reed of gilt bronze continues to flow down the leg into the beautiful Gilt bronze sabot mounts with curling toes. This is a fully functional piece. Not just being a beautiful decorative art, the form being sturdy and strong throughout with a clean writing surface. Large Antique Tiger Oak Finish C style ROLLTOP DESK with interior drawers and cubicles circa 1900. This was obviously a mid-level managers desk. Extremely useable(and fun) with heavy solid wood and no expensive brass to polish. I have used it on a regular basis since I picked it up at an auction in 1971. Condition: signs of wear consistent with age and use. Various use marks, stains and scratches. no keys) Excellent restoration project. Please view the pictures. There was a repair to deal with a weakness in the desk when the roll-top is removed. Several minor repairs are still needed. But I choose not to make them so that I didn't mess up the value of the desk by doing them wrong. All of the original wood and screws are present for the repairs. I am not totally clear as to whether there is a Tiger Wood Veneer over some other hard wood ... moreor if it is solid Tiger Wood. Herter Brothers Style Antique Aesthetic Movement Desk with Inlays
This Aesthetic Movement desk has been in our family since the 1930's when it was brought to Pennsylvania from New York City. But we don't know very much about it. It is black with a very decorative beautiful inlay which may be mother of pearl. The dimensions are 67 inches high, 31 inches wide, and 21 inches deep. The writing surface folds down and reveals 2 drawers and 4 cubby holes. The top portion has a highly decorated door which reveals a compartment with a removable shelf. There are shelves on the top right and left sides. And a large pull-out drawer. At the bottom is a leather footrest. We believe this piece to be an antique. We have been told by a museum curator that its appraisal value is $2.600. The desk shows signs of wear consistent with a piece of furniture of its age. The felt writing surface has not been restored. Antique Mahogany Desk w/ Inlaid Walnut, Tambour Doors, Hepplewhite Style
This is beautiful and very intricate in detail; it is an early 1900's genuine mahogany Hepplewhite style tambour secretary desk. It has burled mahogany. And has a tooled leather top with ethereal gold leaf detailing. This desk features a warm reddish-brown finish, six open letter cubbies and one cubby with a door. There are three smaller drawers with dovetail joinery, oval brass pulls, and four square tapered fluted legs with caster feet. Recessed front tambour doors roll in from the sides to hide the letter cubbies and cabinet. The exquisite marquetry work includes ribbons and garlands, medallions, band inlay throughout and shield escutcheon. The main storage drawer is generous in size. The desk is about 30 inches wide. 40 inches high and 22 inches deep. I no longer have the key to the lock. I do not have experience with shipping furniture ... moreso this will need to be local pickup. That being said.
