CIVIL WAR PERIOD TRAVELING WHALE OIL CAMP or FIELD DESK LAMP
One of the definitive traveling camp or field desk lamps of the Civil War. This compact style is such that it makes it easy to stow and travel. It has a wire handle that allow for movement. As well. This style camp or field desk lamp is pictured in many of the reference books on Civil War period lighting and artifacts. Unlike the one I sold last week this one has a much larger fuel reservoir. The upper lamp is made entirely of sheet brass with a screw-on. Wick cover, filler cap and burner in one. The lantern measures about 2-1/2" high and 2" across the tin resevoir base. The lamp uses typical construction technique of the CW period. This lamp burned whale oil. Alcohol, kerosene, turpentine or any other lamp oil that was available. Nice 19th century traveling writing desk. Wood veneer is broken in a couple of places. There are old repairs to the veneer. As well. There is a little brass key inside. We couldn't get the lock to work. The wtiting surface is covered in green felt, in good condition. The bottom is covered in red felt. The interior has some ink stains. Hinges are in good repair. This auction is for an old lap desk. The lap desk has worn edges and has many nicks. Scraps, scratches and dings. Some of the gold paint around the box is missing too. There is a name and year written on the bottom of the desk, but it is very faint and can only be seen while hold the desk at a certain angle to the light. I tried to capture the writing in a picture, but could only get the first part of the name. The name stands out the most. The rest of the writing, I believe would be where the owner lived and the year is much fainter. It looks like Maggie C Farr(something) something) 1876 or 1896. Antique TRAVELING Writing DESK w/ INKWELLS & KEY Bureau Lap Box
This is an auction for a beautiful antique traveling writing desk or bureau. It has a wonderful inlaid design and is complete with two inkwells and still has the key(the lock is functional) It measures approximately 11 3/4" vertical) x 13 5/8" wide x 3 1/2" tall(at the back) when closed. The desk slants to be 2 1/4" tall in the front(when closed) When opened. The desk measures approximately 20" long. It has multiple compartments as you can see in the photos. There are two compartments(see pic#10) underneath the wood near the inkwells(where one would place quill pens etc. There is another larger compartment(see pic#12) underneath the top of the felt desk(there is small leather pull tab that lifts the top felt board to reveal the compartment) The inkwells are topped with pieces of bone. Ivory, clay, or bakelite(not ... morereally sure what it is made of…maybe added later? and a cork underneath. The brass handle and plate that is on the top of the desk(when closed) is loose but can be easily secured by the new owner. This desk was owned by my great-grandfather, Walter S. Gifford, who was the President of AT&T and the U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain(he worked with Churchill) If you Google his name, you will see that he is often credited for making AT&T the largest company in the world and for expanding telephone use across the world. Since he worked for AT&T during most of the 1900's, he worked closely with people including Woodrow Wilson, Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, Winston Churchill, and more. We believe that he had this bureau at his office in London when he was the Ambassador. I can write a letter of provenance at the request of the winning bidder. This is a wonderful antique faux painted Lap Desk from the early 1800's. It is in very good condition for its age and use. The desk has all of its original finish. The desk has its original glass ink holders. It has a small shrinkage crack on the top lid of the desk which does not detract and adds to its lovely authentic original charter. The small inside compartment lid is missing. The desk does not have a key. The desk measures approx. 10 inches or 25.5cm long x 12 inches or 30.5 cm wide x 31/2 inches or 9 cm deep. This was found in an estate with many lovely items and this was the woman's moms desk from when she was a child. There was a letter found in the box that which is included. I have up for sale a very nice vintage/ antique circa 1870s- 1890s smaller size Hand Carved Wood Traveling Secretary Lap Writing Desk. It measures approx 13-5/8" long. 9-1/2" deep,and 3" high on the back section. The top lid folds down to reveal a writing surface, still has the old velvet, the ribbon is a recent replacement of course. Under this is a storage area for papers or documents. The top section folds up, for a storage area for pens, inkwells and accessories. 1800s Antique Victorian Paper Mache Lap or Traveling Desk with Inlays
This late 1800s lap desk is about 14 in. by 10 ½ in. and 4 in. high when closed. Open it is about 20 in. by 14 in. and 3 ½ in. high. The floral design is made with Mother of Pearl inlays that give a multi colored iridescence to the image. The surface shows areas of alligatored finish with wear and small marks. The interior has wear with a replaced strip at the top of the velvet. A 1 in. loss at the hinge area, and repairs at both hinges(see photos) The false bottom is missing in the pencil compartment(this created a hidden space) Four chips were repaired on the edge of the bottom. This is a Beautiful 19 th Century Traveling Lap Desk. The box is covered in a wood veneer and has an inlay circle on the lid and around the key hole. The writing surface is covered in green velvet and is original to the piece. The hinges are original and in good repair. In addition to storage under the writing surfaces. There are four compartments, one of which is covered. The bottom of the desk is covered in green felt. The box is in very good aged condition. There are few places were the veneer has broken and there are some age or shrinkage cracks to the wood(see pictures) The box is 14” across. 9” wide, and 5” tall. It was procured at an Antique Estate Auction in Central Kentucky.

Up for auction is a beautiful vintage antique leather tri-fold folding travel desk blotter set recently found at auction in the suburban Philadelphia PA area. This is currently in fair to good used condition with incredible potential for being quite nice with a little effort. It has a leather outside with a high grade vinyl pocket interior which features two writing blotters. A paper pocket and a place for pens, a business card holder and small pocket for stamps or paper clips, also included is a pen blotter/tester. This writing desk is 92 years old. The measurements are about 11 1/2 inches wide and about 8 inches from front to back. It is about 3 1/2 inches from top to bottom. This item is meant to be cherished and stored under glass. I am starting the bidding at what I paid for it. I will also be sending this with insurance of at least $100.00. Victorian Inlaid Wood Traveling Lap Desk for Writing As Is Shown. 4" height 12 3/4" length 8 1/2" width This lap desk is in fair condition. There are some scratches and small gouges throughout the piece due to normal wear. The wood on the top of the case has chipped away along the bottom edge and along the bottom right edge. The wood has also chipped away around the corners of the piece. Some of the inlaid wood has been replaced(see pics) The floral design that has been inlaid into front is still intact. There are small white paint splatters on the top of the case. The wood trim is coming loose along the left side of the top half of the case. Some of the corners on this piece do not align tightly. Three of the ... morecorners appear to have been repaired before. There is a lock on the lower front half of the desk; the key is missing. There are two hinges on the back of the case. One side of each hinge has come loose from the case. The holes where the screws were secured have become worn down and too large. The inside of the lap desk is in good condition. There are no cracks or chips on the wood inside of the case. There is a purple velvet-like material inside the case that is still intact and has no rips or holes. The inside of the case also has a 1.5" deep slot with four seperate compartments. The largest compartment has a removable cover. A Rare Find 1878 Wooden Cigar Desk with key. I purchased from a family in Kentucky with other items from their Cassius Marcellus Clay collection and was told it came from Cassius Clay home in White Hall in Richmond Ky. When I removed the draws there was a deposit slip from a Jane Clay in Louisville. Wooden cigar desk is Patented Oct 29th 1878. Desk is based on the traveling desks used in the 18th and 19th centuries by military commanders. Ships captains and other literate people who needed communications and records at hand. Hi again. this is a beautiful old inlaid correspondence/ portable desk. it has some bit of inlay missing from the top center. and a piece of silver pin stripe that needs to be glued back down. in addition. Someone replaced the hinges and made a mess of them. i have pictures to show the damage. the hinges need to be taken off and made flat again. then screwed back into the box correctly. ... moreor even replaced. PLEASE look at the pictures. this is a wonderful item and i have made it sound worse than it is. i got a really great deal on it at my latest estate auction. because of the damage. and i can pass the deal along to any amateur carpenter who wants to fix it up. look inside. there is a small latch that holds the top board in place. the old blue velvet needs to be replaced. But the latch is fine. both the bottom and top lock assembly are intact. there is even a key that seems to fit it. but i did not want to force the clock to close. all original finish. a place for 2 inkwell bottles. a slot for stamps and a covered space for ink/ fountain pens the box measures 15 inches across the front. 10 inches wide. 5 1/2 inches tall. i do not know if the inlay is sterling or not. it is all silver color. very dark color. the bottom is light and may have had velvet on it too. but it is gone i thought i got a real bargain. i think this is a sleeper for someone else who

His name is engraved on the brass plaque. In the folded position. This Lap Desk is 10 ¼ by 19 ... more¼ by 7 inches tall. Around the figured mahogany panels is an inlaid border of rosewood and brass. There are two thin brass straps missing from either side on both the front and the top. This was caused by wood shrinkage over the years, which is also the reason for the stable crack down the middle of the cover. On the inside is the original felt writing surface. Originally, this felt made a cloth hinge and over the years, the velvet has split and the bottom writing panel is loose. Underneath the top writing surface are two tiny dovetailed drawers. There also is a second dovetailed drawer on the side of the case with a recessed brass handle. The brass hinges, lock, and recessed handles are original and in very good condition. This circa 1850s Mahogany Lap Desk retains its original finish. On Stand Great Piece For Restoration Please be patient there are 32 photos to be loaded in this auction. In this auction. We have a wonderful antique, Victorian era slant top lap ... moredesk which is on a stand. Inside of the desk is a panel that conceals two secret drawers for security while travelling. You never know when your stagecoach is going to be set upon by brigands or highwaymen! The wooden box, we think it is walnut, features brass hardware, as you can see in the photos, the lock, the inset on the cover, and straps around the corners, etc. The box measures approx. 13 ⅝" by 8 ¾" by 5 ¾" standing approx. 19 ¼" tall with the stand. When you open the desk. You can see the desk top panels are covered in a textured black paper with gold gilt trim. The finish of the wood has a wonderful glow to it, along with signs of age and use, such as surface scratches and little nicks, as well as mystery stains. We found an old hand written name on one of the wood pieces- T W Cox. We took photos of it, so that you can see for yourself. We believe that the stand is a later addition to the piece; the wood is not quite a match. Other things to note about the condition: One of the brass straps is beginning to come away from its location. Vintage Wood Traveling Writing Lap Desk w/ Bluenose 1921 Sailing Sail Ship
This great lap writing desk is a lovely vintage item. The image in top is of a 1921 Bluenose sailing ship. He desk opens up with compartments inside. There is some wear to the exterior and interior as you can see but all in all- good order. The box is wood and is painted blue with the ship image printed on the top. It measures 14.25" by 13.25" It appears there was a knob atop to help open the desk that is now missing- although can easily be replaced and does not detract from the lovely find nor does it prevent the desk from opening easily.
