With a coloured lacquered wood floral design to the top and finished ... morewith a tassel. The top has the most lovely design of flowers and outlining in coloured and textured pyrography- where the wood was decorated with hot tools to produce a raised and textured effect. This box has a rather Art Nouveau look to it. The box has a little drilled hole in the side of the base. Through which fine string or ribbon can be threaded and then pulled out beneath the top, but it can also be used as a standard box for holding paperclips or small items on a desk or dressing table. The item is nicely made and has an old paper label underneath which reads"Au Printemps" So I think this was orignally sold in France. Condition is overall very good. Ut there is some wear to the green varnished areas in the top design- but this is still a lovely and rare piece. If used as a string box. I feel this would be best suited to thin string, thread or twine, as shown in the picture- and will be included with the box- rather than thick string. It is a King Louis XIV writing desk with a beautiful marquetry top adorned with gilded ornamentation. We are pleased to offer this EXQUISITE. Antique(early 20thC) French, Louis XV, ladies, petite desk/secretary with hutch. The pieces are burled mahogany and rosewood veneer. They are oval(the hutch is demilune) and there is a decorative bottom stretcher that is large enough to function as a shelf. Both the desk and the hutch feature EXCEPTIONAL. Marquetry inlay with unique patterns. The patterns are urns, ewers and flower pots accented with leaves and flowers. These are somewhat"ancient, earthenware" looking patterns, instead of the usual, more formal, marquetry designs. The marquetry is abundant and is present on the front, sides, bottom stretcher, as well as on the top of the table and the top of the hutch. The back profile of the hutch is a grained, rosewood veneer. The desk features a center drawer with old, dove tail joints. ... moreThe hutch features a center, open storage area, two side storage areas with doors, and a center drawer. The doors are hinged with brass hinges and are fixed with brass, flat head screws. There are ornate, bronze mounts on the front legs and the front feet. The hutch has two holes underneath which fit into wooden dowels located on the table top. The finish more of a satin/matte rather than extremely glossy. There are no makers marks or stamps on either piece. Both pieces are in good condition. Structurally. They are very good and they are very sturdy. There are some cosmetic blemishes with some scratches and chips. These are not terribly severe or distracting and most of them can be resolved. As it is, the desk is quite beautiful with a slightly aged character. This is an unusual piece with fabulous marquetry design. The piece measures as follows: When together. The secretary is 47" tall, 36.25" wide and 23" front to back. The hutch is 15" tall, 36.25" wide and 13" front to back. The weight of it being considerable in it's solid core construction. Stamped on the underside"Made in Spain" the piece captures the spirit and vibrancy of the Louis XV period with utmost accuracy. The bronze mounts are exceptionally well done for the period, each almost entirely free of casting flaw, these filed and chiseled into perfection before being fire gilded. The female masks on the corners have a hammered texture, these being almost monumental in stature and projection from the legs. The top is a well preserved tooled gilt black leather edged in cross banded veneers and framed in a very thick gilt bronze rim with shell corners.
