When fervor for antiques of the Louis XV taste were still at a remarkable high, this very attractive French Louis XV Bureau Plat was embellished with great effort. Featuring a solid mahogany top with a molded edge, the front of the bureau plat has a long hand dovetailed drawer for storage, opening to reveal a solid golden oak interior. The keyhole escutcheon is probably the finest bronze mount on the desk, a piece that prominently features the rocaille movement around the fully functioning key and lock. The apron is shapely, the front and back mirroring the flow of the top with a slight inversion in the middle. The cabriole legs are formed with very fine gate, the tapering form nearly perfect in proportion to the table, each surmounted with an intense rocaille Gilt bronze mount with the"C" form featured actively as it curls over the entire knee- a thin reed of gilt bronze continues to flow down the leg into the beautiful Gilt bronze sabot mounts with curling toes. This is a fully functional piece. Not just being a beautiful decorative art, the form being sturdy and strong throughout with a clean writing surface. For decorators passionate about the French Louis XV form, this is a wonderful find. Measurements: 39 1/2" wide x 23 7/8" deep x 29 1/4" high to top of desk; 24 1/8" high to underside of drawer(when sitting) Condition Report: Light dings and chips throughout. Including some loss to the corners of the drawer, a small"dent" in the top and scuffing to the top. Overall very attractive, the typical wear and use abrasions being somewhat limited and the overall desk being quite well preserved. The bronzes are of medium quality with some pitting and cracks from the foundry process- we believe the mounts are unsigned, though only one sabot has been removed and examined. New York City Circa 1920-40 Item# 412PQZ13Z This very attractive French Louis XVI Style Antique Writing Table or Desk was crafted in solid mahogany and mahogany veneers and retailed by Jacques Bodart of New York City. The desk retains the original photograph from when it was retailed by Jacques Bodart. Inc. during the first quarter of the 20th Century, noting this as#1681. It is a gorgeous antique french desk, the original gilt highlighted tooled green leather preserved in remarkable condition, framed in well patinated molded mahogany over five drawers. The desk rests over four tapered and stop-fluted legs with square brass caps over each leg and terminating in plain brass capped feet. Jacques Bodart. Inc. crafted very fine reproductions of Louis XVI ... more18th and 19th Century antique furniture, marketing these to interior designers and decorators around the country from their showroom in New York City. FRENCH LOUIS XV STYLE ORMOLU MOUNTED KINGWOOD BUREAU PLAT 20th Century. Crafted in Spain Item# 411ILK17Z This is an unusually well crafted bureau plat. The weight of it being considerable in it's solid core construction. Stamped on the underside"Made in Spain" the piece captures the spirit and vibrancy of the Louis XV period with utmost accuracy. The bronze mounts are exceptionally well done for the period, each almost entirely free of casting flaw, these filed and chiseled into perfection before being fire gilded. The female masks on the corners have a hammered texture, these being almost monumental in stature and projection from the legs. The top is a well preserved tooled gilt black leather edged in cross banded veneers and framed in a very thick gilt bronze rim with shell corners. One side of the desk has three drawers, ... moreall dovetailed, the other side with three faux drawer fronts. The entire desk rests over bold cabriole legs that terminate in scrolled sabots. While many bureau plats are available. Particularly from the second and third quarters of the 20th century, few meet the quality and precision standards of this exceptional piece.
