This is a beautiful golden oak victorian bookcase circa 1880. The bookcase has 2 glass doors. 4 adjustable shelves, and 2 storage drawers at the base. The drawers have the nice original hardware including key eschusions and locks although there is no key. However the doors doesn't have the key eschusion but has the lock and the working key. The same key does not fit the doors and drawers. The bookcase is a nice size. It measures 70 1/2" tall, 36" wide, and is 13 1/2" deep at the top 12" deep at the shelves and 15" deep at the base. The original beveled mirror on the top backsplash is 10 1/2" x 6 1/2" oval and has a smoky appearance. There is nice trim around the doors. The wood used on this bookcase is oak which has developed a lovely patina over the years. The top section has Corsica glass in it which adds a unique look to the piece. Both top and bottom sections house one shelf each and there is a single drawer for storage. The entire bookcase is finely decorated with carvings ... moreof lions. Cherub heads, and floral decor. The lions heads at the top of the bookcase hold brass rings in their mouths, the lions on the bottom section do not. Both doors lock with included key. The drawer is fashioned with hand cut dovetails. Overall the bookcase is quite sturdy. There are a few minor flaws such as an age split on the right side and a repaired section of moulding at the top of the glass door. Besides minor wear consistent with age these are purely cosmetic issues and the piece is in very good shape. It does break down into top and bottom sections for easier transport. The relatively small width of this piece makes it ideal for filling smaller spaces in a variety of rooms. Plenty of storage space in this wonderful bookcase. The carving is beautifully done on this door at the bottom. The Corsica glass is unique and interesting. Here is the repaired moulding at the top of the glass. ~ Bookcase Made Of The Oak From HMS Foudroyant- Lord Horatio Nelsons Flagship 1799-1801 ~ This oak open revolving bookcase. Was manufactured from the oak and copper from HMS Foudroyant, Nelson's flagship from the 6th of June 1799 until the end of June 1801. The bookcase was produced by Goodall of Manchester. And bears an inscribed copper plaque to top stating its source using salved materials. The bookcase has 3 shelves and rotates on a spindle. ~ Dimensions ~ The piece has a height 29 inches(73.5cm) And measures 20.5 inches by 20.5 inches(52cm) ~ Condition ~ There is a crack to the top of the piece. Some of the boards are slightly worn by age, it revolves with a bit of play but the piece appears to be in otherwise good condition. ~ HMS Foudroyant ~ HMS Foudroyant was an 80-gun third rate of the Royal Navy. One of only two British-built ... more80-gun ships of the period(the other was HMS Caesar(1793) Foudroyant was built at Plymouth Dockyard and launched on 31 March 1798.Note 1] Foudroyant served Nelson as his flagship from 6 June 1799 until the end of June 1801. Foudroyant had a long and successful career. And although she was not involved in any major fleet action, she did provide invaluable service to numerous admirals throughout her 17 years on active service. In her last years she was used as a boy's training vessel. In June 1897 she was towed to Blackpool. On 16 June 1897 during a violent storm. She parted a cable and dragging the remaining anchor, went ashore on Blackpool Sands, damaging Blackpool North Pier in the process. The Blackpool lifeboat was able to rescue all 27 of her crew. After vain attempts to refloat her. Her guns were removed and she was sold for ₤200. She finally broke up in the December gales. This grand library bookcase has marvelous spiral columns, plus high relief panels with"music" and"architecture" motifs. Doors have old wavy glass on this furniture from the alpine area of southern Germany and eastern France. Often called"Black Forest" design. The original finish is remarkably well preserved with glowing patina. Waxed and polished. Only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain its warm deep luster. Stunning, Pristine European Oak Bookcase, Late 19th/Early 20th Century, 6x7 ft
This bookcase belonged to my great grandfather who lived in Alsace and Germany around the turn of the century. It was brought over to the states in the 1940's by my aunt and uncle. The piece was just appraised. It was made somewhere between 1890-1920. Fair market value has been established at $3720. Though the actual value is between $5200 and $6500(see below) Here is more detail from the appraisal: The bookcase has 3 glass doors. There are rectangular wood inserts; the cornice overhangs and is triple molded and flat. The bookcase is a dark stained oak; the sides of the bookcase are paneled; the front sides of the bookcase have fluted Corinthian columns with 2 large relief scrolls. Above the doors are large relief scrolls which extend the width of the bookcase. The apron appears to be straight and the bottom is a flat molded bottom as ... moreopposed to feet and legs. The bookcase is classified as a"Continental" European bookcase. The wood inserts are astragal(wood or lead) and is a method of securing the glass. It is difficult to tell from the photos if the wood inserts have panes of glass or the inserts are"placed" on the glass. The bookcase is of an English style and would date C. 1890-1920. English furniture has both Germanic and Celtic strains. The bookcase is a larger reproduction of a mid-18th century English piece. The value for the triple bookcase would be between $5200.00 and $6500.00 in today's retail market. Large C19th Antique Victorian Carved Oak Gothic Open Freestanding Bookcase Shelf
We have for offer here a stunning large Victorian carved oak Gothic open bookcase dating to the latter part of the 19th century. This impressive bookcase measuring 9 feet long has a carved edge top over three sections divided by heavily carved columns to include cherubs and foliage each with original oak shelves and raised on a plinth base. The bookcase is in good order being suitable for every day use. There are another two shelves for the bookcase but there are no wooden slats to support but these are easy to make and the shelves not shown will be included in the sale. This lovely 19th century bookcase has its original finish.Original glass with its original tiger oak mullioned frames encased in glass in each door.
