Top of the piece had a section that was at one time covered in velvet(which is now dry) which was there originally, set back abot 3 inches away from the edge, all finished. This is a classic period piece with a mix of elements from the Louis XVI era in the fine arts medallions mixed with Renaissance revival carvings and stained glass. It is solid oak. This wonderful 19th century bookcase appears to have its old original finish that is rich and inviting with wonderful aged patina.
