The gothic revival begins in earnest in 1837 with the publication in London of Pugin's Contrasts. But this gothic revival bookcase with glazed doors must date towards the 4th quarter of the 19th century. It seems well constructed and an attractive piece of furniture that would prove useful and harmonic in almost any home decor. This bookcase has wear commensurate with its age. The outside finish is a bit dull, but a good polish would make it look fabulous. The shelves are all adjustable. The center door is missing the lock, the two side doors have locks and a key but I cannot get them to work. MEASUREMENTS: 72 long. Internally there are 4 adjustable shelves. The cabinet retains its lock. Handles and hinges and is surmounted, by a blind frieze and a pediment section. The pediment section can be removed to provide additional headroom if necessary. This fabulous cabinet displays a delicate sense of proportion typical of the Georgian Classical. It doesn't mess about. It does what it does with a sense of solidity and of confidence. There is minimal decoration allowing the quality of finely chosen mahogany timbers to shine through. The Swan-neck bonnet-top pediment is carved with foliate detail on moulded plinth and plain frieze above three locking.
