The shelf is made of only(6) solid curly maple boards(plus the backing) The top has a crown type hand cut-out decoration and the back is made of pine wood. The wood is heavily grained with nice depth and absolutely stunning. WHEN MADE: Mid 1800s is my best guess. Possibly a little earlier. SIZE: Approximately 46" tall x 26 1/4" across and 17 1/2" deep. Each board is around 7/8" thick. Description: Here is a MARVELOUS example of a Victorian Era Bamboo Book Case. It has the tortoise shell decoration to the bamboo parts as well as some pyrography leopard spots remaining on the shelves. There is also a pair of sharpened dowels running up each side and nice turned ball finials. It is about 36" tall to the knobs on the rear legs. the top shelf sits about 29" above the floor.it is about 20" wide and 11" deep. it is complete and the shelves are all solid at the corners. the two top shelves are 100% the bottom shelf had a small split near one corner but that was repaired a long time ago from the looks of it and the board is feels as solid as the other two. The is an age crack or two here and there but none seem to be in a critical area. The bottom right rail of the little decorative gallery at the rear of the ... moretop shelf has a tiny amount of wiggle room but remains solid as are the rest of the gallery pieces. I also added two more pictures of the feet of the shelf which shows that each leg ends in a solid and complete bamboo"ring" node. Those of you familiar with these shelves will know how rare that is on a piece of this age. The color and patina are FIRST RATE as you can see in my pictures. I brought the book shelf from a lovely little antique shop in the Lake District when I was on my Honeymoon. However I never got round to putting it up and I don't really have the room for it. It has been in a corner of my bedroom for ages now, which is a real shame as its a beautiful piece of Oak. Antique Hand Painted Dutch Children's Book Holder Shelf
Antique. One-of-a-kind, hand painted folk art children's wooden book holder/shelf. Not sure of the wood- possibly stained pine. The inside slats of the book holder have 6 painted dutch girls on one side, and two blue birds, with smaller birds on a flowering branch, on the other. The ends of the book holder are also painted with scenes of flying birds, flowers, and an open book, featuring a scene of a country house, and robed man with a staff respectively. Not 100% sure of the origin of this shelf, but high probability it is Dutch, given the dutch girl decoration, and the clothing the robed/staffed man is wearing. The shelf was purchased in antique store, about 40 years ago in England. The book holder measures 18 1/2" long x 6" high x 8 1/2" wide.
