Book: Care & Maintenance of Antique Furniture & Wood
Preserving Your Investment. Care and Maintenance of Furniture and Wooden Objects" By Marc A. Williams. Published by Furniture Conservation Services in 1983. DISCUSSION: A practical guide to the principles and facts of the conservation of furniture and other antique objects made of wood. This is NOT a"how to do it" handbook that will show you how to repair joints and refinish tops-it is. Rather, a guide as to why and how wooden objects deteriorate, what you can do about it, what you cannot do about it, and what information that you may have heard is true and false(for instance, the concept that you need to'feed' wood to keep its moisture content intact is inaccurate and potentially damaging) It was written to give the collector the basic information needed to decide how to care for a collection, or how to proceed when ... morethere is damage. Topics covered include Ethics, Wood, Finishes, Paint, Gesso, Gilt, Adhesives, Humidity, Temperature, Light, Biological Deterioration(bugs& mildew) Pollutants& Dirt, Chemical Deterioration, and Accidents. An excellent starting point which lays the groundwork for further study. Out of print and somewhat difficult to obtain. DESCRIPTION: Softcover. 5.5"x8.5" 32 pages, no illustrations. ANTIQUE VINTAGE 1920s - WWII FABRIC UPHOLSTERY FURNITURE COVERINGS SAMPLES BOOK
20 GREAT EXAMPLES OF VINTAGE FURNITURE COVERINGS! WONDERFUL'BOOK' OF ANTIQUE/VINTAGE"SLUMBER CHAIR COVER SAMPLES" FABRIC- UPHOLSTERY- FURNITURE COVERING SAMPLES DATES FROM THE 1920S- WWII 20 SAMPLES FROM THE MAKERS OF THE STREIT SLUMBER CHAIR CINCINNATI. OH BASED UPON MY RESEARCH: The slumber chair was made by C. F. Streit Manufacturing Co. founded in 1871 in Cincinnati. OH. The"Slumber Chair" was made from the mid 1920's until World War II. I have included a lot of pictures because this sample book is in rough condition. It is VERY OLD& it's dirty! I have not attempted to clean it whatsoever. I will leave that up to the buyer. I think that the samples themselves could be cleaned up quite nicely with an upholstery cleaner. The metal binding& the staples that affix the little tags to each sample ... moreare rusty. Therefore there are rust marks/stains on the fabric throughout the book. Condition of samples: there are some rough spots, stains, and some of the outer stitching is coming apart on a few. The upper left of the black part that reads"Slumber Chair Cover Samples" is not there. Measures approximately 9 3/4" X 9 3/4" PLEASE REFER TO THE PICTURES AND ITEM DESCRIPTION& ASK ALL QUESTIONS BEFORE BIDDING. AS THERE ARE NO RETURNS. I HAVE 100% POSITIVE FEEDBACK& I DESCRIBE MY ITEMS TO THE BEST OF MY ABILITY. ITEM MUST BE PAID FOR WITHIN 3 DAYS OF THE END OF AUCTION OR ITEM WILL BE RELISTED. OHIO BIDDERS MUST PAY SALES TAX.

Ames& Ward 1 note: This catalogue presents a detailed examination of the card table.based on Hewitt's statistical analysis of 176 characteristics of each of some 400 surviving tables. The catalogue provides new information about the design and construction of tables from twelve regional centers of, and establishes norms for, the attribution of federal-period objects. The book contains a lengthy essay by Hewitt; detailed entries, prepared by Hewitt and Barbara McLean Ward, on 56 of the tables included in the study; basic information on the 374 tables in the study; numerous line drawings of construction; ... moreillustrations, many in color, of the 151 varieties of patterned and pictorial inlay found on the tables in the study; an essay on the role of price and design books by Kane; and some observations on the role of card playing by Gerald Ward. The culmination of a decade of research by Hewitt, this publication marked the first time that a scientific method of connoisseurship was applied to the study of American furniture on this scale and suggests a methodology- rigorous and precise- that can be applied to other large, homogeneous groups of objects" DESCRIPTION: Softcover. 9"x10.5" 198 pages, b/w and some color illustrations. The Tobey brothers, Charles and Frank, were leaders in the Chicago business community and in the national furniture industry. Tobey's general manager, George Clingman, for a time also the company's chief buyer and designer, was granted patents for his"mission" or Arts and Crafts furniture designs, including a patent for the iconic"Tobey Chair. This book provides not only an illustrated 38-page history of the Tobey Furniture Company, but also provides for the first time unabridged reprints of Tobey's 1900 New Furniture catalogue, Tobey's 1901 New Furniture in Weathered Oak catalogue, and Tobey's 1903 Russmore Furniture catalogue.
