This is a terra cotta Moche Vessel from Peru. It is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. It has been carved and slip painted and appears to have a form similar to an artichoke. This item is 7.5" tall x 6.5" deep and 5.5" wide. This was originally purchased on eBay from the FernandezLeventhal Gallery in Oct. 2001 as item# 1471707572. This auction is for an authentic Nazca Bowl from about 200 AD. Measuring 7 inches in diameter x 3 inches tall. The surface is well burnished and the paint is in good shape. The walls are thin and tapered and the bowl has good symmetry. The designs on the sides represent"achirana" the spiral wells found in this very dry region. The bottom of the bowl has a small area of spalling. Which has been sealed to prevent additional flaking. Otherwise, it is in excellent condition without repair or restoration of any sort. Rare vessel from the Moche culture(200 to 700 ac) which florished in Peru´s dry nothern coast. Moche pottery was realistic and many examples show supernatural humans and animals representations. This double spout ceramic displays a Moche master warrior and a supernatural animal with a Spondyllus shell as body. Approximate height: 10 inches(26cms) Approximate diameter: 5.5 inches(15cms) There is some scratches and wear as you would expect. Part of the base is broken(not available to reattach) Also. Animal, vegetable or mineral? from coastal Peru, dating from about 100 to 800 AD, more or less. T he condition is mostly good. Showing great age and wear overall, with a chipped area on the front end(see pictures) possibly the reason I cannot identify what it represents, about 34 mm(1-3/8 inches) in length, about 20 mm tall when viewed from the side and 15 mm at the widest part. This is a great Moche stirrup portrait vessel. Made in Peru by the Moche Culture that antededed the Incas. They were prolific artisans. This vessel has checkerboard geometric patterns with Cross shapped glyphs on it. There appears to be a few clear mineral deposits but overall there are not a lot or root markings. A very neat looking pre-Spanish contact(pre-Columbian) stylized double sided flying bird pendant carved from orange spondylous shell. Sourced from coastal Peru, probably Moche culture dating from about 100 to 800 AD, but possibly Lambayeque or Sican, dating as late as 1400 AD. T he condition is mostly good. Showing great age and wear overall, about 19 mm(about 3/4 inch) wide, by about 19 mm tall, and 4 mm in thickness. The flat style pendant has a suspension hole on each side of the back that pierces the back near the corners and comes out through the narrow sides(so the suspension holes cannot be seen from the front) The holes are at the bottom sides of the bird. Upside down from what we might think. The early Peruvian peoples often strung pendants this way(or sewed them on their clothes) apparently caring more about seeing it themselves ... morethan from another's point of view. Pre Columbian Moche Shell Inlaid Ear Plugs
This incredibly well preserved set of Pre-Columbian wood ear plugs. On which the geometrically decorated shell elements, is attributed to the Moche horizon of Peru, c.100-800AD. Not wearable today due to the fragile nature of the wood that has dried and shrunk through the many centuries of entombment, there are certainly few other such pairs that have survived this well. The pair is from the Embody collection which came from an anthropologist and former primitive arts collector who has permitted us to handle a number of the last items from his important and varied collection. A rare and very unique Moche IV pottery skull bottle/vessel/head artifact that is very unusual. It has sunken eyes and teeth in mouth with a cranial protrusion representing the head of a dead person that may return from the dead. It has a stirrup type handle with spout and a very bizarre countenance but it is most interesting even if eerie. Painted with black outlines on lips and striped and triangular designs on forehead. Ears done in white. I don't know the meaning of the lump on the forehead but maybe the poor fellow was hit with a club. He seems happy enough. A really ingtriuing piece for the collector.
