The Moche people were primarily a coastal agricultural group with a very strong artistic approach to all aspects of life. They are most famous for their beautiful jewelry, ornamentation and very illustrative pottery. This very unusual piece is thick and heavy hammered copper or copper-alloy in the shape of a large thrusting parrot head with an elongated rear section which has a hole in the end. There is a small green turquoise bead representing an eye on one side only. The condition is mostly good, showing the typical mottled green oxidation that appears on ancient copper from this region, about 38 mm or 1-1/2 ... moreinches at the widest point, 3 mm in thickness, and a long 122 mm or about 4-3/4 inches in length from beak to the rear-end. A copper mortuary figure of a warrior from the Moche culture of ancient Peru. Ca. 100- 800 AD. The figure with a heavy verdigris and earthen patina is in a sitting position, he holds a shield in his right hand and a tumi head axe in his left. He wears a necklace of round beads, and circular earspools both having corrosion losses.
