Pre-Columbian Mexican Sitting Figural Vessel Nayarit Culture. 250 BC- 200 AD ~ please scroll down for more photos ~ Pre-Columbian terra cotta figural vessel from Western Mexico. Nayarit Culture. 250 BC to 200 AD. SIZE: Height- 8.25" 12 cm) Width- 4.5" 11.5 cm) Depth- 3.5" 9 cm) An anthropomorphic male sitting figure. Leaning forward with his left hand holding an object in, or up to his mouth. His right hand is on his right knee. The figure has foreshortened legs, long curving arms of unequal length, a flattened face with a proportionate nose and coffee bean eyes. He is wearing multiple ear spools. This figure's head. Body, and legs are hollow and there is a large round opening at the top of his head, making the piece into a vessel as well as a figure. The figure's hair is cut into bangs across the forehead and the details ... moreof the hair were inscribed into the clay before firing. The neckline also has dimension and is raised up from the body. Depicting the figure to be wearing clothing. The surface of the figure is of the red burnished- polished clay and there are remnants of white and possibly black slip pigments painted on the face. There may have been yellowish designs on the chest. As well, but if so they hardly visible now. The surface shows dark dimensional manganese deposits in many areas. And some light encrustations of dirt and other substances in the crevices. This piece is between 1.800 and 2,250 years old. It was collected during the 1940's and was obtained from an old San Francisco collection. Condition: This piece is in good excavated condition with no losses. The following is noted: A tight. Stable, very thin hairline extending from the front of the figure's throat, over his right shoulder, to the back of his neck. It appears that there is a very old repair where the upper left part of the head has been glued back after a separation. A line showing this runs under his left eye, up the forehead and hair and down the back of his head and over the left ear(please see photos

West Mexico, circa 200 B.C. 300 A.D. This Ixtlan Del Rio type measures approximately 4 1/2" tall by about 3 1/2" wide, and depicts a seated warrior. Because some figures of this type are seated. Which is an impractical position for someone engaged in physical combat, some scholars suggest that these figures more likely represent shamans engaged in spiritual, rather than physical, warfare. Ethnographic data also supports this theory, since these figures are almost always facing left- the direction inhabitants of the region believe is symbolically associated with malevolent spirits or misfortune. He is shown holding a staff or club in an offensive position, ... morelooking slightly toward his left, perhaps engaged in shamanic, spiritual battle with unseen forces. His face bears a fierce expression, mouth shaped as if vocalizing or blowing. He is also wearing ear and nose ornaments, a pointed hat or helmet, and a shield on his back. Interestingly, the surface of the shield is dimensionally patterned with raised areas similar to that of a turtle shell. Such objects were created exclusively to accompany the deceased in the deep shaft and chamber tombs for which the ancient cultures of this region are known. Condition: Intact overall. With restoration to very minor loss at the lower tip of the staff and to the bottom of one foot. Some chipping and minor loss at the top of the hat. Otherwise, expected weathering, wear, chipping and abrasions overall. Sediment, mineral and Manganese deposits remain, attesting to the age and authenticity of this example. Provenance: Former C. RARE Pre-Columbian Nayarit Stone Bird Head Pendant & Blade Holder, Mexico
A Pre-Columbian Nayarit stone bird head pendant/ blade holder. Ancient Mexico, circa 200 B.C. 300 A.D. This pendant is pierced for suspension. And was likely around the neck on a necklace by the ancient owner. The slit in the bottom and perforated holes were for mounting a sharp obsidian cutting blade, allowing the blade to be held and used either for practical or ritual purposes. The bird head shape appears to be that of the Roadrunner, indigenous to the ancient West Mexican region, and revered by ancient inhabitants there as a skilled predator. Measures about 1 1/4" long. A RARE and interesting artifact. Condition: Intact with a great ancient patina. Showing minor wear, weathering and general minor abrasions and chips. 4 Piece Pre-Columbian Nayarit Shaft Tomb Offering Pottery Group, Ancient Mexico
A four piece grouping of Pre-Columbian Nayarit offering vessels. Circa 200 B.C. 300 A.D. The plate measures about 5" across, the bowl about 4" across, the small jar about 5" tall and the fat jar about 5" tall. Each features a highly burnished orange finish. The bowl and the bottom of the plate feature interesting striated burnished decorative designs, best visible when viewed in cross light. These items would have been placed with the deceased in the deep shaft and chamber tombs of West Mexico to symbolically provide sustenance during the journey to their concept of the afterlife. It is rare to find matched grouping such a wide range of forms as these. Condition: Each vessel is intact and in excellent condition. With minor chipping, abrasions weathering and wear. A pair of Pre-Columbian Nayarit miniature offering vessels. Circa 200 B.C. 300 A.D. The bowl measures about 2 1/2" wide and the mini olla measures about 1 3/4" tall. These items would have been placed with the deceased in the deep shaft and chamber tombs of West Mexico to symbolically provide sustenance during the journey to their concept of the afterlife. Condition: Each vessel is intact with minor chipping. Abrasions and loss to original slip/pigment. Residue on base from old collection label. Provenance: Former Lynn Langdon collection. Miniature Pre-Columbian Nayarit Tripod Vessel, Ancient Mexico
A miniature tripod vessel from Pre-Columbian Nayarit. West Mexico, circa 200 B.C. 300 A.D. Measures approximately 2 ¾” tall by about 2” wide. This interesting vessel features a reddish orange pigment over the surface. With a fine cream-colored slip, depicting circular symbolic forms around the exterior, possibly representing the sun. The rounded vessel body sits gracefully atop three tripod legs. Condition Intact overall. With one tripod leg reglued into place with no restoration over the breakline, and a trowel mark on the very bottom of the bowl. Provenance: Former Lynn Langdon collection of West Mexican artifacts. Pre-Columbian Nayarit Cloaked Figure, Ancient West Mexico
A Nayarit seated figure from Pre-Columbian West Mexico. Circa 200 B.C. 300 A.D. This piece measures approximately 3 3/4" tall by about 2 1/4" wide, and depicts a seated individual. They are shown cloaked in a blanket with ornate designs indicative of Nayarit artistic sensibilities, wearing large ear and nose ornaments as well as a readdressing featuring a large decorated band. Original pigment remains, revealing geometric designs in white black and orange against a red slip, typical of Ixtlan del Rio variety Nayarit material. A wonderful diminutive example(rare) remaining in excellent condition. Condition: Intact with strong original pigment remaining. Minor abrasions. Weathering, wear and expected pigment loss. His travels and artifact hunting seem to have been exclusively in Mexico. He travel ed there extensively in the mid-1950's. No other provenan ce was a vailable. The pot measures 3½ inches high and 6 ½ in diameter at the rim.It was broken and(expertly) re-glued at one time. There is a chip missing along the"foot" The white mark along the rim is a mineral resid ue and not a break. An old piece of masking tape with"N-3" written on it is on the base.
