The area known archaeologically as West Mexico has long been recognized as a region of beautiful ceramic sculptures. Manifestations of a reverence for ancestors and a belief in the power of symbolism. These traits are recognized as characteristic of the cultural development of the region during the period from 300 B.C. to 400 A.D. the time of the Colima culture. Colima is best known for its finely finished red burnished effigies, both of humans and animals, especially dogs, and the solid small unburnished figurines, commonly called Colima flats. It measures 2 inches in width by 0.5 inches in depth by 6 inches in height(5.08 cm by 1.27 cm by 15.2 cm) The figure shows wear consistent with a Pre-Columbian dating, with a hairline cracks on both legs from previous repair work, but generally is in very good condition. It also comes with a specially designed, hand-made iron museum display stand for display. Guaranteed authentic, it would make a superb addition to any collection of Pre-Columbian ceramics. Kurt Stavenhagen was a Wikipedia-worthy collector of Precolumbian sculpture to whom I was introduced by Ferdinand Anton- a German anthropologist and photographer who filmed my family exploring the Maya ruins of Chichen Itza in 1964 for a movie he made for Time/ Life Magazines and German television which compared modern art. Such as Picasso and Henry Moore, with ancient art like the Maya. I also studied how to distinguish an authentic precolumbian sculpture from a fake: 1) provenance; know the source; 2) study precolumbian anthropology; see what's in the museums and the books; 3) lick. Or otherwise wet, the object and see how long it takes to dry; ancient ceramics take a long time to dry because they are more porous than new ceramics. 5) Shipping. No charge for a U.S. address.

Precolumbian head from Teotihuacán. Mexico, 41(1) Precolumbian. Sculpted, ceramic head; most likely 500 A.D. or older(That is 1,000 years or more before Cortez invaded Mexico and conquered the Aztecs. The Aztecs, who arrived in the Valley of Mexico long after Teotihuacán was abandoned, named the ruins Teotihuacán- place of the gods. The Aztecs and the Greeks had the same word for gods- teo. 2) Dimensions. approximately 1 inch by 1" by half an inch" I apologize for not providing metric dimensions. I live in a country that clings to ancient English measuring systems instead of the clearly superior and much more functional metric system. 3) Medium. clay. Hard fired under great heat. 4) Provenance. I found this head(and other heads) in a farmer's field near the center of the ruins of Teotihuacán. Near Mexico ... moreCity, in 1966 or 1967, when I was an anthropology student at the Universidad de las Americas in Mexico City. Generally, these farmers' fields were rocky and dusty but rain would wash the dust off the rocks and reveal that some of them had faces- and were terracotta heads and not rocks. Many times, after a rain, I would take a bus from Mexico City to Teotihuacán, explore the farmers' fields, and look for those features that were not visible when covered with dust. In this way, I acquired dozens of precolumbian heads. How to distinguish an authentic precolumbian sculpture from a fake: 1) provinance; know the source; 2) study precolumbian anthropology; see what's in the museums and the books; 3) lick. Or otherwise wet, the object and see how long it takes to dry; ancient ceramics take a long time to dry because they are more porous than new ceramics. Views of this old head show front and back.

Ancient Pre Columbian Mexican Colima Pottery Dog With Human Face 600 AD
Origin:Mexico Circa: 400 AD to 600AD Dimensions: 9" long x 4 1/2" wide x 4 high Condition: Superb. With the usual very minor losses. No repairs. Dogs were revered and respected in ancient Mexico's Indian culture. The"Colima Dog. a distant relative of the Mexican Hairless and the Chihuahua, may have been a pet, or it may have been fattened for eating- or both! Among the early colonial immigrants, a Jesuit Priest, Sahagún, examined and wrote of the things concerning the"new" lands of America. Regarding these dogs of Colima, which are generally portrayed as quite fat, even grotesquely so, but many of which have happy faces, he says, The dogs of this land have four names, called: Chichi, Itzcuintli, Xochiocoyotl, Tetlamin; and also tehuizotl… They raise other dogs that they call Xoloitzcuintli with no hair at ... moreall… There are other dogs that are called tlalchichi, short and round, that are very good to eat" It is believed that the hairless dogs. The Xoloitzcuintli, represented the god Xolotl, who had the task of guiding the dead on their journey to"Mictlan, that is, the Spirit World. The Aztecs believed that in order for the souls of the dead to reach"Mictlan" they had to cross the black river"Apanoayan" as well as overcoming other obstacles, and these hairless Xoloitzcuintlis had the task of guiding their human masters across this river, along with helping them overcome all the other difficulties on the journey. It is said that these red-colored dogs became the chosen guide because for a black dog to the perform the task, it was found to be difficult to distinguishing its black shape on a black river, in the murky underworld. When a white dog was approached as a substitute, that dog refused because it didn't want its coat soiled by the dark waters. The red dog then stepped up to the task and performed it well. Pre-Columbian Mexican effigy axe head
EFFIGY AXE HEAD I offer for sale a pre-Columbian effigy axe head of origin in Mexico. The axe head was given to my family 60 years ago by a Mexican farmer. My family was in the fresh produce business with growers in Sinaloa and Sonora. Mexico. My mother was interested in archeology and in particular ancient Mexican cultures and was thrilled to receive this axe head. The artifact has remained in our family for six decades, little compared to the centuries it has survived. The following are two emails from some of those I contacted. I found a couple of fairly similar effigy axes in the online catalog of the American Museum of Natural History(AMNH) New York, that were collected in the late 1930s by an archaeologist named Gordon Ekholm. So I emailed your pictures to a colleague of mine who works in Sonora and Sinaloa. I’ve attached his reply ... morebelow. I hope this information is helpful. Thanks for sharing this fine example of Sinaloan workmanship. As far as I know. These tend to be found between approximately the Sonoran border and about Culiacán; this area corresponds roughly with the Huatabampo tradition within Sinaloa, although we found a similar though cruder dog effigy maul at Rincón de Buyubampo, located within the Serrana tradition(formerly referred to as the Alamos or southern branch of the Río Sonora tradition) of the Sierra Madre foothills. I don't know if they might have an Aztatlán tradition affiliation or not-I'll try and let you know what I discover. As to their phase/dates, I believe they are mostly associated with the Guasave period(1000-1450 CE) of the Huatabampo tradition. Recently I contacted relevant departments at the University of Arizona and was connected with authorities who offered some leads. One collector who made a generous offer. Suggested that this effigy axe head is made from a stone used further south in Mexico, perhaps in the Yucatan and was eventually brought to Sinaloa centuries ago where it was discovered 60 years ago. I cannot offer a definitive history of

Mexican Pre-Columbian antiquity from Nayarit-Museum Piece
This item is a unique terracotta set of figures around a table from Nayarit. It was purchased in the 60's in Mexico and was exported with all the requisite permits. Unfortunately copies of the export permits are no longer available. The condition is commensurate with the object's age. The outstanding detail of the figures is most unusual for this type of artifact. The separated figures are easily re-attached. But given that it will be shipped it would be best to re-attach them at the end destination. Please note some small parts are missing. Refer to the photographs. Some careful restoration could bring out further detail. Please refer to the photos. It will be packed very carefully for shipping, and will be insured to the full value of the final bid. It is difficult to estimate shipping cost from Australia until the item is packed, ... morebut I expect the shipping cost with insurance will be around $300.00 Final figure to be determined, but I will refund any excess payment. I am open to suggestions as to shipping preferences, but I would recommend a courier and not the postal service. Customs, if any are the responsibility of the successful bidder. I would also suggest checks be conducted to confirm there will be no issues with the importation of this item. No reserve price. The starting bid is the reserve. Payment by Paypal within 3 days. PLEASE INQUIRE ABOUT SHIPPING BEFORE YOU BID AS I WILL NOT SHIP TO SOME COUNTRIES. Item is located in Melbourne, Australia. Please note that the shipping values including insurance are a rough estimate. 0fe.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk%601d70f%2B%3E0fe-14a2f506106-0x112-

dog head, Pre-columbian sculpture, ancient Mexican art, 1,000+ years old, #104
1) Precolumbian. Sculpted, ceramic head; most likely 1,000 to 2,000 years old. 2) Dimensions. 1.25 inches high. 1.75 inches wide, and about 1.5 inch deep. 3) Medium. clay. Hard fired under great heat. 4) Provenance. I collected precolumbian sculpture from 1965 through 1967 in Mexico and- from 1966 through'67- when I was an anthropology student at the Universidad de las Americas in Mexico City. How to distinguish an authentic precolumbian sculpture from a fake: a) provinance; know the source; b) study precolumbian anthropology; see what's in the museums and the books; c) lick. Or otherwise wet, the object and see how long it takes to dry; ancient ceramics take a long time to dry because they are more porous than new ceramics. Photos show front. Back, and bottom of sculpture. $10 off if you purchase more than one of my listings and ... moreI can ship more than one item in a package. There is ONE $10 discount per package. For other items.
