Fine Patina- Museum Quality Condition: Very Good 10 1/2" height The Tairona ceramic chronologies range from 200 BCE to 1650 CE. And the Caribbean coast of Colombia has evidence of ceramics from at least 2500 BCE. Recent investigations in Chengue, Parque Tairona by the Colombian archaeologist Alejandro Dever show significant variations in the ceramic that allow for a chronological division of sequence into at least five phases. The first phase, called Nahuange 1, appears to start at around 200 BCE and ends at around 500 CE when there appears to be a peak in the population. A second phase spans from 500 CE to about 900 CE; it can be called Nehuange 2, and was called Buritaca after detailed ... moreexcavations by Jack Wynn in the 1970s. From c. 900 CE began what is commonly called the Tairona period, characterized by an impressive increase in the variation, size and number of ceramic forms, many conserving the styles from the Nehuange or Buritaca phases. A cute smaller olla type Tairona vessel. Rare type, with faces emerging from vessel side. Authentic piece. Purchased at a dealer auction, and there is a COA if requested. The Tairona culture lived north of what is now Ecuador, in Columbia. It is a single color and the glazing seems splotchy with wear in less its a tarnished effect. There are areas of discoloration on it as per photos. There are manganese deposits. And root markings inside. Large Pre-Columbian TAIRONA CHIEFTANS CEREMONIAL FIGURAL EFFIGY VESSEL 2 Heads
For your Bidding Consideration in this Auction is an exquisite and HIGHLY BURNISHED Pre-Colombian Figural CEREMONIAL VESSEL from the Tairona culture which was in the Northern part of Magdalena in the Region of the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta. This object was CONSIDERD TO BE ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT POSSESSIONS of this culture. The Vase is an ovoid shaped vessel with the Anthropomorphic figure of a man on each side. This highly decorated type of vessel was used in Ceremonies and held the fermenting Corn liquid which was very alcoholic in nature. The Corn/ Liquid were poured into the large opening and the Ceremonial Participants would share drinking of the mixture from the smaller. Spouted end. Each figure appears to be wearing elaborated beaded necklaces. The Vessel measures@ 10 1/4" tall x 13" x 9 1/2" Shipping weight estimate ... moreis 6-7 ponds. Looks to have been professionally and expertly repaired some time ago as there is a crack with some tiny glue remnants visible around the base where it affixes to the bowl area. So well done. Up for sale Ceramic Small Bowl from the Pre- Columbian Tyrona( Tairona) Culture( 200BCE-1600CE) The bowl comes from the area of the“ Lost City” Spanish: Ciudad Perdida” in the region of Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. In my opinion this Bowl was used for rituals and in no way for food. Serving or preparation. This item comes from my private collection and was brought from the area of the Ciudad Perdida. Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in 1989. Just below the rim the Bowl is a design consisting of a line all across it and tiny dots above and below it. Also it has two pairs of protruding dots just below the rim. At the bottom rim there is a pair of tiny holes that were made during the process of its creation. The Bowl is covered with patina and dirt and never been cleaned by me. At some point it was repaired and there are 2 pieces that have been ... morerejoined with glue.
