Pre Columbian Mexico Pre Classic Olmec Jade CELT
Pre Columbian Mexico Pre Classic Olmec Jade CELT Amazing large Pre Columbian celt This piece is unique since it has a very comfortable shape for the hand to grasp it. There is a rounded end and immediately below a depression that is perfectly ergonomic. An expert in Pre Columbian artifacts mentioned o us that he had never seen one that has the depression for the rope to attach this as an ax on a handle. I believe this depression is to fit comfortably onto a hand and prevent the tool from slipping off. The photos do not depict it clearly but it is smooth on the working end. The stone is light green possibly from the Guerrero area and may possibly be Mezcala. Shows age and mineral deposits. Ancient Pre Columbian Proto Classic Nayarit Seated Shaman Figure - 100 BC
An ancient pre-Columbian Nayarit terracotta figure of a seated shaman. Dating to the Proto-Classic period, 100 BC– 250 AD. The male figure is shown seated. Coloured with a deep ochre pigment and wearing only a belt, painted necklace and elaborate headdress. Supported on legs contorted into a seemingly impossible position, the broad, square torso imbues this individual with a domineering physical presence. The small hands are gripped tightly into fists, as if the figure were flexing his muscles whilst shouting. The head is marked by discordant almond eyes, a prominent nose, deep, round mouth and small lips. The ears and nose are pierced with multiple rings. The staring eyes and open mouth of this figure are disturbing yet gripping; appealing in the strangest of ways. He appears in a trance-like state, speaking to a very ancient place inside ... moreour psyche. Nayarit figures form part of the mysterious shaft tomb culture of ancient western Mexico. Little is known about ancient Nayarit life beyond these enigmatic figures and the other artefacts they produced. The discordant facial expressions of figures such as this have in some quarters been advanced as evidence of shamanism. Haunting and intense. Their true identity remains lost in the distant, unknown past. Height: 13 inches. Condition: Very good. Some minor restoration, including to nose piercing. Beautiful pigment preservation, overall good for an ancient figure of this size. Provenance: From the collection of Mr S. Seeger. Mr Seeger was a well-known art collector with a keen eye and ample financial means. This piece was exhibited. Along with other examples of his Pre-Columbian art, at Princeton University in 1961. The following quote is from the exhibition catalogue, scans of which can be provided to the new owner upon request: Especially choice. Also, in the collection is a remarkable group of Pre Columbian sculptures purchased by Mr Seeger from the distinguished collection of the late Keith Warner. Kelleher et al. The S.J. Authentic PRE-COLUMBIAN 100% ORIGINAL PRE-CLASSIC RATTLE 1000 BC - AACA
PRE-COLUMBIAN 100% ORIGINAL PRE-CLASSIC RATTLE 1000 BC This is a Pre-Columbian Terracotta Rattle that I believe to be Pre-Classic and probably dates between 1.000- 500 BC. The head is approximately 4 1/2" tall and 3" wide, hand to hand. The rattle still works. There was a lable on the rattle at some point which I assume would have detailed its origins but I have been unable to find it. It would be a great addition to any Pre-Columbian collection. PROVENANCE: All of the Pre-Columbian items I have listed were dug or obtained in the 1950's or very early 1960's by a Memphis Dr. while he and his wife were on one of their many expeditions to Central. Coloured with a deep ochre pigment and wearing only a series of arm rings, prominent belt and pointed cap. Supported on enormous claw-like feet, the broad, square torso imbues him with the physical makeup of a warrior. One arm is raised brandishing a club, the other extended slightly forward and bent at the elbow, holding a small shield. The head is marked by sunken almond eyes, a prominent nose and parted lips revealing large grinding teeth. The ears and nose are pierced with multiple rings, a painted necklace is also present. The staring eyes are disturbing and discordant. Yet almost impossible to tear away from. An overpowering wrath bleeds from the very fabric of ... morethis striking warrior. There is something visceral in his bearing, defying reason, he appears in a seemingly trance-like fury, speaking to a very ancient place inside our psyche. Nayarit figures form part of the mysterious shaft tomb culture of ancient western Mexico. While the subject matter was relatively consistent throughout the entire region, style distinctions are present. This figure is of Nayarit's Ixtlán del Río style, the westernmost of all Nayarit sites, which is characterized by highly stylized facial features and thick, stocky limbs.
