Pre Columbian red clay Figure of a figure w/ headress. Nayarit Mexican Pottery
This figure comes from part of a collection from an important Northwest Artist who loved Mexico. This figure measures 4 1/8 inches tall. Has some of it's original paint and no damage to limbs or face. It can stand on it's own with out any problem. 2 Antique Clay figures Man & Woman, Nayarit ?. Pre Columbian Pottery Very Old
These two figures were bought at an Estate Sale from a very Important Oregon Artist who loved Mexico. These were in his private collection and appear to be artifacts from a dig done decades ago or maybe even much longer ago. They could be hundreds of years old or thousands. I am no expert so I just don't know. They loose a little dust every time they are handled so I was very careful in photographing them. Please ask questions before bidding if you are not sure. I am no expert, just know that these appear to be a red clay and as you can see from the photographs some of the areas of each figure are worn off and a dust comes off of them when handled because they are so old. I have never had anything this old so will pack very gently when shipping them to you and if you have any special shipping instructions I will do my best to comply.

Ancient Pre Columbian Proto Classic Nayarit Pottery Warrior Figure - 100 BC
A large and imposing ancient pre-Columbian Nayarit terracotta figure of a warrior. Dating to the Proto-Classic period, 100 BC– 250 AD. The standing male figure is shown naked. Coloured with a deep ochre pigment and wearing only a series of arm rings, prominent belt and pointed cap. Supported on enormous claw-like feet, the broad, square torso imbues him with the physical makeup of a warrior. One arm is raised brandishing a club, the other extended slightly forward and bent at the elbow, holding a small shield. The head is marked by sunken almond eyes, a prominent nose and parted lips revealing large grinding teeth. The ears and nose are pierced with multiple rings, a painted necklace is also present. The staring eyes are disturbing and discordant. Yet almost impossible to tear away from. An overpowering wrath bleeds from the very fabric of ... morethis striking warrior. There is something visceral in his bearing, defying reason, he appears in a seemingly trance-like fury, speaking to a very ancient place inside our psyche. Nayarit figures form part of the mysterious shaft tomb culture of ancient western Mexico. Displaying all aspects ancient life, from ritual ceremonies to grand feasts, warriors to simple family scenes. While the subject matter was relatively consistent throughout the entire region, style distinctions are present. This figure is of Nayarit's Ixtlán del Río style, the westernmost of all Nayarit sites, which is characterized by highly stylized facial features and thick, stocky limbs. Little is known about ancient Nayarit life beyond these enigmatic figures and the society itself remains a mystery. The discordant facial expressions of figures such as this have in some quarters been advanced as evidence of shamanism. Haunting and intense. Their true identity remains lost in the distant, unknown past. Height: 27 ½ inches. Condition: Very good. Minor restoration throughout, including to right arm and foot, one toe missing(as shown) head reattached. Beautiful pigment preservation, overall goo

4 Piece Pre-Columbian Nayarit Shaft Tomb Offering Pottery Group, Ancient Mexico
A four piece grouping of Pre-Columbian Nayarit offering vessels. Circa 200 B.C. 300 A.D. The plate measures about 5" across, the bowl about 4" across, the small jar about 5" tall and the fat jar about 5" tall. Each features a highly burnished orange finish. The bowl and the bottom of the plate feature interesting striated burnished decorative designs, best visible when viewed in cross light. These items would have been placed with the deceased in the deep shaft and chamber tombs of West Mexico to symbolically provide sustenance during the journey to their concept of the afterlife. It is rare to find matched grouping such a wide range of forms as these. Condition: Each vessel is intact and in excellent condition. With minor chipping, abrasions weathering and wear. Root marks and mineral deposits attest to the age and authenticity ... moreof these examples. Provenance: Former Lynn Langdon collection. Personally collected by Langdon in West Mexico between the 1940's- 1960's.
Ancient Pre Columbian Nayarit Painted Pottery Warrior Figure - 100 BC
An ancient pre-Columbian Nayarit figure of a warrior. Dating to the proto-Classic period, 100 BC- 250 AD. A long serpent-like face. Grinning through the fleshy lips, with a set of prominent teeth and the eyes set impossibly wide on the head– there is something discordant, even monstrous about this figure. Each component seems at odds with the other; be it the gaunt expression with the broad muscular torso or the thick-set legs with the emaciated arms. Yet to dismiss the art of the Nayarit as unaccomplished is to miss its purpose; these figures were never meant to be beautiful, they were meant to convey a sense of power. Standing on claw-like feet, brandishing a short knife and decorated with a deep ochre pigment, this warrior has an undeniable energy, an energy that seems to bleed from the clay itself. Nayarit figures form part of the mysterious ... moreshaft tomb culture of ancient western Mexico. Displaying all aspects of ancient life, from ritual ceremonies to grand feasts, warriors to simple family scenes. Little is known about ancient Nayarit life beyond these enigmatic figures and the society itself remains a mystery. Ancient Pre-Columbian Nayarit Pottery Seated Female Fertility Figure - 100 BC
A high quality. Particularly vibrant ancient west Mexican Nayarit figure, dating to the proto-Classic period, around 100 BC- 100 AD. Sitting upon a two legged stool. The naked figure stares out into the distance through the hollow slits of her eyes, the mouth held open. She clutches her sides in the pose typical of Nayarit female figures, the gaunt features of the face contrasting with the broad body and exaggerated breasts. Her hair tied up into an elaborate coiffure, she wears three spools in each ear and a thick collar around the neck. This is not only an enchanting piece of pre-Columbian art. It tells the story of Nayarit ritual practices and traditional beliefs. We can see the notion of the earth as the great creator and sustainer of humanity, the fertility of the soil touched by the stool is conflated with the fertility of the woman ... moreseated upon it. This idea of shared fertility between the earth and female members of society is still held in some traditional South/Central American societies, where women alone appear in the fields to carry out the first planting of the season. For further reading on the subject. Please see: Townsend. R.F. ed. 1998. Ancient West Mexico: Art and Archaeology of the Unknown Past. Chicago: Art Institute of Chicago. Height: 16 5/8 inches. Acquired from the Hokin Gallery, Palm Beach, Florida on the 9th January, 1975(the original invoice from this sale will be included to the new purchaser upon request) Mr Harry Lynn(1916– 2006) was perhaps best known as the owner of the Washington Coliseum when the Beatles performed their first U.S. concert there on the 11th of February 1964. Lynn was born in Kansas City but spent most of his childhood in Omaha. During World War II he joined the Army and was stationed in France and England. Moving to Washington D.C. in 1948. In late 1959 he purchased the building which would make his name. Over the years he
