Pre Columbian Chancay Peru Peruvian Painted Vessel With Monkey Figure Up for your consideration is a Pre Columbian. Preuvian, Chancay, terra-cotta vessel. It is in good condition. Monkey figure on one handle. Paint is worn. I did not find any chips. If there are some they are very tiny. It is not cracked. It measures about 7"tall. I do not have any promenance. I acquired it recently at a local auction house. It came with the paper. Likely auctioned off once before somewhere. It was brought to a church for their yard sale and the pastor decided that it would be better sold at auction. Please feel free to ask questions. My shipping fees are based on the package weight and priced according to the Post Office. I do not include a handling or material fee. I will combine purchases.

It was made in Peru in the 1920's-40's out of ancient textiles from pre-Columbian burial cloth. The doll has a brown dress with a gold lace apron. She has long braids and a blue and cream band on her forehead. Her facial features are red and black yarn. This doll has been protected by being encased in a lucite box frame that is ready to either display on a shelf or. If desired, it can be hung on the wall or if preferred it is very easy to remove from the case with two screws. This is a very well made and heavy case. The doll is 9" x 3" The lucite case is 12" x 5" x 3" deep. They are both in excellent condition. The Chancay doll represents a blurring ... moreof the line between the past and the present. Indigenous Peruvian artisans recreate Chancay dolls(named after the Chancay culture that inhabited the central coast of Peru ca. AD 1000- 1476) in the old style using ancient fabrics. It is not unusual for these dolls to combine fabrics that originated at various locations along the coastal Peru- from the North Coast to the South Coast. And that are separated in time by thousands of years. It is not known whether Chancay dolls were made specifically to be placed in tombs as funerary offerings. Or if they represent possessions from life that were buried with their owners. Among pre-Columbian Peruvians. The custom of including articles that were important to the deceased was a common burial tradition. Discovered with many interments are tool kits used by spinners and weavers, fishing kits, weapons, and other objects. The relationship of the deceased and these practical funerary goods is obvious. Pectorals of this form were usually worn around the neck as an ornament. There are two holes on one side. The ceramic pectorals were worn by lower ranking Chancay indians. The powerful lords and rulers wore pectorals made out of precious metals. The star points are separated by arcs of approximately 30 degrees with two arc segments used for the attachment holes. The disk is in excellent condition. There is some light chipping to the tips of some stars. But most of the star tips are intact. Depicting two sitting feline or jaguar figures and three floating heads. Framed under glass, textile sandwiched between the glass and a black cardboard backing(not examined out of frame) Finely woven llama wool and probably part of a tunic front. The frame is old and is painted red with tiny yellow spots to match the jaguars. So it was probably framed in Peru near where it was found. As shown in the photos and with the following noted: This is a fragment of a textile, not a complete garment or blanket, as shown and described. Frame in good condition with light overall wear. HISTORY: Not much is known about the Chancay civilization which developed in the later part of the Inca empire. This culture emerged after the fall of the Wari civilization. Parts of the southern Chancay area were conquered by the Chimu in the early fifteenth century and in about 1450 A.D. the Incas were occupying both areas. It is believed that the Chancay had a centralized political structure. Forming a small regional state. Thus the Chancay culture declined in the fifteenth century to make way for the territorial expansion of the Inca Empire. Occupying the central coast coastal region of Peru. The Chancay were centered mostly in the Chancay and Chillon valleys, although they also occupied other areas such as the Rimac and Lurin valley areas.
