A wonderful. Vibrant, published and exhibited ancient Peruvian Nazca Earthenware vase, in the form of a decapitated trophy head, dating to approximately 125- 250 A.D. The vase with rounded base and globular body. Cylindrical neck and wide everted mouth. Skillfully molded and vividly decorated with the depiction of a decapitated trophy head. The ears and long, straight nose protruding from the pot, the head itself shown with closed eyes and long eyelashes, the mouth painted white and filled with black dots, the lips held shut with long black pins and the cheeks decorated with red face paint. Throughout human history man has. Perhaps unsurprisingly, placed a special importance on the head. It has smoke clouds in the glaze likely from the uneven firing. Also manganese deposits and some root markings inside. Good earthy smell when wetted inside. This ovoid jar features a series of trophy head deities or tasters painted around the upper circumference. The cream-colored face with extended tongue, half moon eyes, and marks indicating body paint or scarification is topped with a series of scrolled and peaked forehead ornaments which has eyes, mouths, tongues and spreading serpentlike finials. Bifurcated hairs project from all parts. The predominant slip hues are red, brown, cream, and white. 6"T x 7-1/2"D at widest. Some loss to rim of spout and former lug. Minor surface wear. This exquisitely built flared bowl boasts a striking decorative program. Four squares filled with concentric squares are finely painted in chocolate brown slip on white ground. Between these are trios of faces that form four vertical columns, also painted in deep brown slip on white ground. An overall background of red slip that extend to an upper band on the interior adds to the dramatic contrasts of the design. 3-1/4"T x 5-1/4"D at widest.
