ARTEMIS GALLERY Jaguar Effigy Headed Metate
Jaguar Effigy Headed Metate Click on these links to view larger photos: 1- 2- 3- 4- 5 Panama. Chiriqui or Cocle Culture, ca. 450-1200 CE. This ceremonial metate carved from volcanic stone represents one of the most unusual traditions of the ancient Americas. It features the head of a jaguar at one end, with the metate itself making up the body of the animal. The rectangular surface is framed with an incised scalloped motif. Geometric reliefs adorn its tripod legs. Most impressive is the attention to the jaguar head. We see both naturalism in the physiognomic contouring of the head and at the same time abstract linear markings to denote whiskers and coat. What's more, the artist successfully captured the ferocity of the beast with a snarling grimace of threatening teeth. Some metates were used as grinding slabs, while others showing more ... moreintricate designs were intended for ritualistic ceremonies and as burial offerings. It has also been suggested that some metates were actually used as thrones for rulers to sit on. The decorative program of this metate suggests a ceremonial function. The ornament may be related to the owner the piece or the ritual in which the metate was used. 12"L x 5-3/4"T x 5-3/4"W One very small impression on surface most likely from use, intact, choice! Provenance: EX-Drzik collection acquired in Panama in the 1970's. Authenticity Unconditionally Guaranteed! All items come with a Certificate of Authenticity

This ceremonial celt, being of rare quality, is no exception! 2.75"L Choice condition. Provenance: Ex-Private Chicago. IL Collection. Authenticity guaranteed. ARTEMIS GALLERY Costa Rican Jade Jaguar Celt/Pendant
Costa Rican Jade Jaguar Celt/Pendant Click on these links to view larger photos: 1- 2- 3- 4 Guanacaste. Nicoya Region, Costa Rica, ca. 200-600 CE Jade manifests a wide range of hues ranging from near white to deep blue green. Symbolic associations with water, plant life, hence fertility imbued the stone with meaning beyond its integral beauty in the Pre-Columbian era. Along with Mesoamerica, Costa Rica is one of the two regions where jade was extensively carved in ancient times. This pendant of light green jade flecked with white and ochre of a jaguar confirms the stone's associations with the cat's verdant habitat. While endangered in Costa Rica today, the jaguar was commonly spotted in coastal mangroves, lowland savannas, and shrub lands of this region when this artwork was created. Note the detail of the string-cut carving. In ... morefact string sawing was a technique most likely developed in Costa Rican lapidaries, in the northeast region. The skillful high relief carving of this King of Beasts of the ancient Americas brings the stone to life. Holes are laterally drilled behind the mouth for suspension. Custom, museum-quality stand. This piece is paramount! 4 1/6"T x 1 11/12"W Tiny areas of loss/scratches to surface. Near choice! Provenance: EX-Adeon Gallery. Chicago, IL acquired pre-1970 Authenticity guaranteed All items come with a Certificate of Authenticity
ARTEMIS GALLERY Tlatilco Olmecoid Baby Figurine
Tlatilco Olmecoid Baby Figurine Click on these links to view larger photos: 1- 2- 3- 4 Central Valley of Mexico. Tlatilco, 1200-800 BCE- Tlatilco artists were informed by Olmec influences, as their culture engaged in extensive long distance trade and grew enamored with Olmec greenstone sculptures. Hence Tlatilco creatives produced playful baby style figurines such as this example, with its corpulent body and infantile position. Where it departs from the Olmec iconography, however, is in the explicit delineation of the baby's male genitalia. The piece has numerous perforations for suspension and was likely intended to be a central pendant of a piece of wearable art. It may also have been an offering buried with the deceased. Note the striking deep green hue of the stone and the generous cinnabar deposits that accentuate the articulated ... morelimbs and facial features. Stone figurine pendants of a green hue were intended for the elite. Perhaps you would like to don this piece of ancient regalia! 2 1/4"L x 1-1/2"D x 1-1/2"W Excellent condition with minor wear commensurate with age. Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery. Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970. Authenticity guaranteed. All items come with a Certificate of Authenticity

ARTEMIS GALLERY Moche Jaguar Stirrup Vessel with Conch Shell
Moche Jaguar Stirrup Vessel with Conch Shell Click on these links to view larger photos: 1- 2- 3- 4 Pre-Columbian. North Coast Peru, Moche III, ca. 300-400 CE. The jaguar symbolized power and might throughout the Pre-Columbian world. Warriors, rulers, hunters, and shamans alike associated themselves with this king of beasts, the largest and most powerful feline in the New World. The principal Moche god wears a headdress adorned with a jaguar head and paws and important mortals donned similar headdresses. A nocturnal animal, the jaguar sleeps in caves and dark places and creeps quietly in the forest, evoking great mystery. Oddly enough, few Moche artists would have actually scene jaguars as they are not indigenous to the coast. Jaguars prefer moist forest conditions. However, scholars believe that some cubs were transported over the mountains ... morefor Moche rituals and it is also possible that some jaguars wandered down the coast. The animated visage and exaggerated ears and paws suggest that the artist who created this vessel may not have been working to achieve naturalistic representation but rather to evoke the powerful symbolism of the jaguar. Juxtaposing the animal with a conch shell is characteristic of the Moche. Not only did the jaguar climb trees, it also swam in streams, and the Moche were quite taken with the jaguar's ability to swiftly move between one world and another. Minor surface wear. Bichrome finish appears excellent. Intact and near choice! 10"W x 8-1/4"H x 6"D PROVENANCE: Ex-Splendors of the World. ARTEMIS GALLERY Inca Bronze Female Capacocha Figurine
Inca Bronze Female Capacocha Figurine Pre-Columbian. Peru, Inca, Ca. 1200 CE- 1400 CE. Inca female Capacocha bronze figurine of an elegant form.
