Pre-Columbian Figural Vessel - Nayarit Culture / 200 BC - 250 AD/ Western Mexico
Pre-Columbian Mexican Sitting Figural Vessel Nayarit Culture. 250 BC- 200 AD ~ please scroll down for more photos ~ Pre-Columbian terra cotta figural vessel from Western Mexico. Nayarit Culture. 250 BC to 200 AD. SIZE: Height- 8.25" 12 cm) Width- 4.5" 11.5 cm) Depth- 3.5" 9 cm) An anthropomorphic male sitting figure. Leaning forward with his left hand holding an object in, or up to his mouth. His right hand is on his right knee. The figure has foreshortened legs, long curving arms of unequal length, a flattened face with a proportionate nose and coffee bean eyes. He is wearing multiple ear spools. This figure's head. Body, and legs are hollow and there is a large round opening at the top of his head, making the piece into a vessel as well as a figure. The figure's hair is cut into bangs across the forehead and the details ... moreof the hair were inscribed into the clay before firing. The neckline also has dimension and is raised up from the body. Depicting the figure to be wearing clothing. The surface of the figure is of the red burnished- polished clay and there are remnants of white and possibly black slip pigments painted on the face. There may have been yellowish designs on the chest. As well, but if so they hardly visible now. The surface shows dark dimensional manganese deposits in many areas. And some light encrustations of dirt and other substances in the crevices. This piece is between 1.800 and 2,250 years old. It was collected during the 1940's and was obtained from an old San Francisco collection. Condition: This piece is in good excavated condition with no losses. The following is noted: A tight. Stable, very thin hairline extending from the front of the figure's throat, over his right shoulder, to the back of his neck. It appears that there is a very old repair where the upper left part of the head has been glued back after a separation. A line showing this runs under his left eye, up the forehead and hair and down the back of his head and over the left ear(please see photos

2 Antique Clay figures Man & Woman, Nayarit ?. Pre Columbian Pottery Very Old
These two figures were bought at an Estate Sale from a very Important Oregon Artist who loved Mexico. These were in his private collection and appear to be artifacts from a dig done decades ago or maybe even much longer ago. They could be hundreds of years old or thousands. I am no expert so I just don't know. They loose a little dust every time they are handled so I was very careful in photographing them. Please ask questions before bidding if you are not sure. I am no expert, just know that these appear to be a red clay and as you can see from the photographs some of the areas of each figure are worn off and a dust comes off of them when handled because they are so old. I have never had anything this old so will pack very gently when shipping them to you and if you have any special shipping instructions I will do my best to comply.

However the ball games in much of Mexico were played with a larger ball and with the shield I believe he is warrior. Throwing a rock. In any event, he is in action. Most of the similar items I've seen have the man with a sword so this is a rare form. Piece is in good condition with good manganese deposits. This is a Western Mexico piece from Nayarit culture. Ancient Pre Columbian Proto Classic Nayarit Pottery Warrior Figure - 100 BC
A large and imposing ancient pre-Columbian Nayarit terracotta figure of a warrior. Dating to the Proto-Classic period, 100 BC– 250 AD. The standing male figure is shown naked. Coloured with a deep ochre pigment and wearing only a series of arm rings, prominent belt and pointed cap. Supported on enormous claw-like feet, the broad, square torso imbues him with the physical makeup of a warrior. One arm is raised brandishing a club, the other extended slightly forward and bent at the elbow, holding a small shield. The head is marked by sunken almond eyes, a prominent nose and parted lips revealing large grinding teeth. The ears and nose are pierced with multiple rings, a painted necklace is also present. The staring eyes are disturbing and discordant. Yet almost impossible to tear away from. An overpowering wrath bleeds from the very fabric of ... morethis striking warrior. There is something visceral in his bearing, defying reason, he appears in a seemingly trance-like fury, speaking to a very ancient place inside our psyche. Nayarit figures form part of the mysterious shaft tomb culture of ancient western Mexico. Displaying all aspects ancient life, from ritual ceremonies to grand feasts, warriors to simple family scenes. While the subject matter was relatively consistent throughout the entire region, style distinctions are present. This figure is of Nayarit's Ixtlán del Río style, the westernmost of all Nayarit sites, which is characterized by highly stylized facial features and thick, stocky limbs. Little is known about ancient Nayarit life beyond these enigmatic figures and the society itself remains a mystery. The discordant facial expressions of figures such as this have in some quarters been advanced as evidence of shamanism. Haunting and intense. Their true identity remains lost in the distant, unknown past. Height: 27 ½ inches. Condition: Very good. Minor restoration throughout, including to right arm and foot, one toe missing(as shown) head reattached. Beautiful pigment preservation, overall goo

Pre-Columbian Nayarit Warrior Figure, West Mexico
Pre-Columbian Nayarit Warrior Figure. West Mexico Click on these links to view larger photos: 1- 2- 3- 4- 5- 6 A Pre-Columbian warrior figure from the ancient region of Nayarit. West Mexico, circa 200 B.C. 300 A.D. This Ixtlan Del Rio type measures approximately 4 1/2" tall by about 3 1/2" wide, and depicts a seated warrior. Because some figures of this type are seated. Which is an impractical position for someone engaged in physical combat, some scholars suggest that these figures more likely represent shamans engaged in spiritual, rather than physical, warfare. Ethnographic data also supports this theory, since these figures are almost always facing left- the direction inhabitants of the region believe is symbolically associated with malevolent spirits or misfortune. He is shown holding a staff or club in an offensive position, ... morelooking slightly toward his left, perhaps engaged in shamanic, spiritual battle with unseen forces. His face bears a fierce expression, mouth shaped as if vocalizing or blowing. He is also wearing ear and nose ornaments, a pointed hat or helmet, and a shield on his back. Interestingly, the surface of the shield is dimensionally patterned with raised areas similar to that of a turtle shell. Such objects were created exclusively to accompany the deceased in the deep shaft and chamber tombs for which the ancient cultures of this region are known. Condition: Intact overall. With restoration to very minor loss at the lower tip of the staff and to the bottom of one foot. Some chipping and minor loss at the top of the hat. Otherwise, expected weathering, wear, chipping and abrasions overall. Sediment, mineral and Manganese deposits remain, attesting to the age and authenticity of this example. Provenance: Former C. Thomas private collection. Florida, USA. Assurance of Authenticity: All items offered by Riverbend Gallery have been carefully examined and deemed authentic and ancient. For added assurance. A CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY will be included for each applicable purchase. Fully
Nayarit Seated Figure with Bowl, Pre-Columbian West Mexico
Pre-Columbian Nayarit Seated Figure with Bowl Click on these links to view larger photos: 1- 2- 3- 4- 5 A Pre-Columbian seated figure from the ancient Nayarit region of West Mexico. Circa 200 B.C. 300 A.D. Measures approximately 7 3/4" tall. This figure is aesthetically appealing due to it's subtle, abstract form and restrained features. It depicts a seated female holding a bowl in her lap. Perhaps suggesting a relationship to the production of the alcoholic beverage, Pulque, known from these ancient regions. Production of Pulque was an important symbol of status within this ancient culture. She is shown wearing a large nose ornament, arm ornaments, ear ornaments and a headband-like head dressing- all also indicative of significant social status. Condition: Intact and in excellent original condition overall. With only minor restoration ... moreto part of one arm. The original surface decoration is mostly obscured now by heavy Manganese and other mineral deposits, which are evidence of thousands of years of burial in the Shaft Tomb environment. Provenance: Former North Carolina. USA collection. Assurance of Authenticity: All items offered by Riverbend Gallery have been carefully examined and deemed authentic and ancient. For added assurance. A CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY will be included for each applicable purchase. Fully guaranteeing the item to be ancient and genuine. Pre-Columbian Gourd / Squash Shape Jar Bowl w handles Colima ? Nicoya ? Nayarit?
For your Bidding Consideration in this Auction is a Pre-Colombian Ceramic Pottery Gourd shaped Jar/ Bowl. I have not been able to determine exact culture it is from but it has similarities to each of Calima. Nicoya and Nayarit so please view photos carefully for your determination. It measures@ 3" tall x 4" wide at the widest part. Please view photos for your consideration. It is quite an exquisite piece to hold in hand having been quite expertly crafted into shape with 5 various ribs running vertically on the sides. No cracks or repairs, a very small chip on the lip of the Jar/ Bowl, a small piece of old paper label residue on base which I have not tried to remove as I don't want to damage the jar if I use the wrong solution- in very nice condition!
