This facial attitude likely indicates a demon figure in transformation. It's made of weathered fired tan clay and in excellent condition. Vintage early 1900's Mayan clay Museum Quality Aztec Toltec Idol God figure
Let me start by saying that this item caught my attention and I hope you see what I saw in it. This piece was picked up in an estate sale and is one of the best early 19th century Mayan sculptures made in Mexico that I've seen. The detail in the head dress and body are outstanding. Its made of clay/ terracotta and stands around 8 1/2" tall the darker shades of grey on the head dress and chest seem to be a light grey wash. The top is hollow so you can look inside to see the workmanship. I hope that someone looking for something for their collection like this will take advantage in getting their hands on this fine item. It is obviously a pregant female indicated by her breasts and the protruding stomach. She wears a simple headdress and simple ear spools. The figure is solid. Dense and heavy weighing about 1-1/2 pounds indicative of the Pre-Classic era. The surface is quite dark which may indicate the type of clay in the area. Antique MAYAN Carved Stone Figure AZTEC Carved BLACK STONE FIGURE Deity Effigy
Offered is a Mayan Aztec carved stone deity or effigy measuring approx. 7 inches in height. The figure is carved from a moderately heavy. Yet porous, piece of black stone. The figure is approx. 7 inches high and approx. 3.75 inches wide, at the elbows. The stone measures approx. ¾ to 1& 1/8 inches thick. The back of the carving has been polished to a soft luster, as have the high spots of the relief-carved figure, as shown. There is a light coat of dust over all, especially in the unpolished recessed areas of the carving. I do not know what the stone is. As already mentioned, it is black, though there are a few small areas that have a faint reddish-brown tinge. Condition is good, there being an old, glued repair to a horizontal crack running just above the knees of the figure. I purchased this carved figure in 1986 at an estate auction ... morein Saratoga County, NY. It was found, just as the previous owner had left it, tucked between two layers of cotton inside in an old chocolates box.
