This is a terra cotta Moche Vessel from Peru. It is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. It has been carved and slip painted and appears to have a form similar to an artichoke. This item is 7.5" tall x 6.5" deep and 5.5" wide. This was originally purchased on eBay from the FernandezLeventhal Gallery in Oct. 2001 as item# 1471707572. Although this particular item does not come with an authentication certificate. The gallery is well know for their high level of authenticity and care regarding the background on all of the objects it sells. The Mayans were a Mesoamerican Civilization that developed a complete written language system in the Pre-Columbian era. Their art, architecture, mathematical and astrological systems influenced their surroundings, covering an area of about 620 miles, including the modern-day countries of Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, Northern El Salvador, and Central Mexico. It is hard to date the piece with any precision, but I would estimate it to be at least 800- 1200 years old. One of the figures has a pelican-like face, with a crocodile back. The figure merges into another with a turtle-like face above the bust of a man. Unlike pottery figures, carved stone pieces are quite uncommon. The carving measures 6.5" wide. 5" tall, and 2" deep. The Chorotegas(which translates to"fleeing people" migrated around A.D. 500 from Southern Mexico into the Nicoya Peninsula to escape slavery. Their customs, language and calendar were largely influenced by more advanced cultures of Mexico and Guatemala. The influence of the Mayans was evident in their ... morewritten language and use of a calendar, while their spoken language, Nahua, is distinctly Aztec in origin. The Chorotegas excelled at farming, growing abundant harvests of corn, as well as cotton, beans, fruits and cacao. The latter was originally introduced to Costa Rica by the Chorotegas, and they used its seeds as currency. The land was communally owned and harvests were divided according to need. This assured that even those unable to maintain crops, such as widows or the elderly, were provided for. Like most of the advanced, early Latin American civilizations, the cities of the Chorotegas often featured central plazas with a marketplace and religious center. As many as 20,000 people may have populated a single city, and entire clans lived in longhouses constructed of wood with thatched-roofs. Ceramic art, stone carvings and ceremonial objects made of jade and shells was a very important facet of Chorotega culture and was primarily practiced by women. Pre-Columbian Carved Stone Bird Whistle – Hand Carved from Petrified Wood
This pre-Columbian bird whistle was hand carved from a piece of petrified wood(fossilized wood) The piece was made so that the growth rings appear at the position of the bird’s wing on one side. Wood grain can be seen all over the piece. And tool marks are clearly visible as well. The whistle measures 2” long, and is about 5/8” in diameter. The piece is in excellent condition, with no breaks or repairs. It is a lovely and rare piece, and you are not likely to see another like this. Taino Pre-Columbian Artifact Stone Carved Figure This Taino artifact was acquired in the interior of the Dominican Republic in the late 1960s. It measures approximately 4 inches in height. 3 inches deep and 1 ¾ inches wide. My husband worked in Santo Domingo in the late 1960s and often made trips into the interior on his free time. This piece as well as several other pieces was purchased from the locals there. This piece is in good condition. This is a wonderful old wood hand carved decorative tumi figure made by a local artisan in Cuzco. Peru. This Pre Columbian artifact replica is represented as the kind of artifact that many Peruvians have hanging in their homes much as we might hang a crucifix or a political figure photo in a government building. The tumi has symbolic and practical meaning for Incas and indigenous population in Peru. It was used in rituals, sacrifice, in surgery and any number of cutting tasks. Usually made of bronze or stone it was also produced in pounded flat copper tumi replicas for currency, or as collectibles. They have now become very popular as a collectors item of Pre Columbian Peruvian artifacts and reminders of ritual usage in ceremonies and inca sacrifices of llamas, but also children and their enemies. Found they were used in spiritualy trying to ensure a good crop and harvest- sometimes placed actually in the fields or in a jar. It measures@ 2 5/8" tall x 1 3/16" wide at the widest part. An interesting Pre-Columbian Colima stone object with carved symbols. Circa 200 B.C. 300 A.D. This small hard stone object is attributed to the ancient Colima culture/region. Since that is where it was found by Langdon in the 1940's- 60's. It is of undetermined use and/or meaning, but exhibits various shapes, incised lines, and"X" patterns. As such, it could have been a kind of stamp or seal, possibly an atlatl weight(tied on to an atlatl) or simply an object of abstract symbolic meaning and function. Measures just under 1 1/2" long. This auction is for a rare and interesting Pre-Columbian Colima carved stone animal head. Possibly representing a Tapir(American native pig) circa 200 B.C. 200 A.D. Colima carved stone objects are rare. The carving most likely depicts the head of a Tapir. Which is a type of pig/hog native to the ancient Americas. The carving is quite detailed and animated, exhibiting a great deal of skill on the part of the ancient maker. Measures about 2 3/4" tall, made from a hard greenish colored stone known from the region, similar to the kind of stone that Mezcala stone figures were made from in nearby regions. Condition: Fragmentary. Possibly broken at the neck, although it may have been intentionally made this way, with the neck showing unfinished/rough stone material.
