This auction is for an authentic Huari canteen from about 700 AD. The vessel measures 6 inches wide x 7.75 inches tall with a mirror-like burnished surface. The top of the canteen is painted black with rayed eyes and the neck has a chevron design. The lugs are intact. Although I regard this as Huari. There is a chance that this is very late Nazca. If you take a look at p 48 of Proulx's book, A Sourcebook of Nazca Iconography, you will find a description of late phase Nazca items that fits the designs and finish on this canteen. However, the shape of the canteen is unlike other Nazca canteens I have seen. Dating between 200- 400 A.D. This ancient ceramic figure has his flesh done in a tan colour, nails, eyes, and hair in black. The lips, and portion of the geometric design on his torso done in red. Two peg holes(one on each side) are also found on the doll. What sets this example aside is the size; measures 10 ½ inches high! It is intact save for some surface ware in the area of the toes. Beautiful large Pre Columbia terracotta pottery trichromatic bowl or trophy head vessel or jar with clear bright paint. Pre-Columbian. South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 125-250 CE. A bulbous jar formed and decorated to depict a head with a swell at the top forming a fanciful turban bound with slings. The thin, beak-like nose is modeled and extends from the surface, as do the ears. The visage is quite expressive, with wide, almond-shaped eyes, pencil thin eyebrows, circular motifs indicative of cheeks, an oblong mouth framed with facial hair, and neatly manicured sideburns. In Nazca Culture, trophy heads are associated with mythical beings, and it is thought that the main purpose of headhunting was ritualistic, that these heads were intended as offerings to the Mythical Being. This is a Vintage Chulucanas Handmade Nazca Design Pottery Vase. Nazca- black line design with a monkey on one side and a reptile on the other. This is an unusual vase in that it has canteen shape with a very narrow opening on top. Like a slit. Pretty coloring in red, turquoise, blue. And beige with black accents. The vase is signed on the bottom by Alex Ramirez. There is a"CH" below his name which I would take to be an abbreviation for Chulucanas. Also a sticker that says"Made in Peru.
