From the ... moreMayan culture, Honduras. A wonderfully painted polychrome bowl in red. Black and cream, it features bands painted with various geometric motifs, some linear in nature, others curvilinear. These bowls convey images of esoteric knowledge in the form of pseudo-glyphs and references to mythology. It measures 7 inches in diameter by 3 inches in height(7.62 cm by 17.7 cm) and dates to the Maya Classical Period(300-900 A.D. During this period. The Maya began using polychrome slip paint, meaning they used many different colors to decorate the pots. This method of decoration became almost homogeneous for Mayan potters, thus signaling the beginning of the Classic Period. The pot shows wear consistent with a dating to this period, and generally is in very good condition, with rubbing, minor scratches, tiny chips and wear showing on the inside. It is guaranteed authentic and would make a superb addition to any collection of Pre-Columbian ceramics. Mayan reproduction polychrome earthenware cup footed pedestal chalice
I do not know the age or origin of this piece. But it is most likely a more modern reporduction. It stands just over 4.5" tall, is about 3 5/8" diameter at the top and 3 1/8" on the bottom. It has an uneven shape and I don't believe it was done on a wheel. It resembles a chalice but I am not able to find a comparably shaped Mayan style piece. Look closely at the pictures to decide for yourself. It does have a hairline crack about an inch long on the inside and outside just to the right of the smaller painted male figure. Honduras. It is 7-38" high x 4" rim. And tells an age-old story of matrimony. It was agreed that this beautiful Classic Mayan Polychrome Jar depicts the Late-Classic Mayan Period(AD 250) where the artists(much like the Anasazi artists) got cruder and slooper as time went on. Same held true with architecture. The only artforms that seemed to get better with time. were Navajo Weaves& Nampeyo Ceramics! The peoples living around this lake today still tell age-old stories about the sacrifices that took place here by the Mayan centuries ago, and the magnificent treasures that must still rest at its bottom!
