This is a gorgeous prehistoric Costa Rican piece. It came from a large Mesoamerican antique/artifact collection out of San Francisco. It’s in great overall ... moreshape considering it’s age. I had an expert take a look at it and he does believe that it is 1000 to 1500 BC. it is almost impossible to prove this, though without carbon dating. He said that it is most likely genuine and old. Take a look at all the photos to see genuine condition. Quite a beautiful piece to display in your home. Simple yet very elegant.

Costa Rican Jade Jaguar Celt/Pendant Click on these links to view larger photos: 1- 2- 3- 4 Guanacaste. Nicoya Region, Costa Rica, ca. 200-600 CE Jade manifests a wide range of hues ranging from near white to deep blue green. Symbolic associations with water, plant life, hence fertility imbued the stone with meaning beyond its integral beauty in the Pre-Columbian era. Along with Mesoamerica, Costa Rica is one of the two regions where jade was extensively carved in ancient times. This pendant of light green jade flecked with white and ochre of a jaguar confirms the stone's associations with the cat's verdant habitat. While endangered in Costa Rica today, the jaguar was commonly spotted in coastal mangroves, lowland savannas, and shrub lands of this region when this artwork was created. Note the detail of the string-cut carving. In ... morefact string sawing was a technique most likely developed in Costa Rican lapidaries, in the northeast region. The skillful high relief carving of this King of Beasts of the ancient Americas brings the stone to life. Holes are laterally drilled behind the mouth for suspension. Custom, museum-quality stand. This piece is paramount! 4 1/6"T x 1 11/12"W Tiny areas of loss/scratches to surface. Near choice! Provenance: EX-Adeon Gallery. Costa Rican Stone Carving
Large axe god carved pendant made of polished green quartz(aventurine) The elite class of the Mesoamerican culture typically wore these pendants. It has the classical Costa Rican characteristics of pre-Columbian jade carvings with the upper figure of a face and the lower part the shape of an axe. Aventurine. Not as prevalent as jade from this area, has been used for several melleniums for stone carving with examples found in both south and central America. Contact me for a link to the British Museum to verify this information. Aventurine is a form of quartz. Characterized by its translucency and the presence of platy mineral inclusions that give a shimmering or glistening effect termed aventurescence. Aventurine, like jade, has a hardness on Moh's mineral scale that is similar to jade. Date of this item is unknown. The axe god is 7 7/8" ... moretall. 1 3/8" wide.
