Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE GJPaw Auctions is pleased to offer a Pre-Columbian terracotta Standing Figure. From the Colima culture, ... moreWest Mexico. The area known archaeologically as West Mexico has long been recognized as a region of beautiful ceramic sculptures. Manifestations of a reverence for ancestors and a belief in the power of symbolism. These traits are recognized as characteristic of the cultural development of the region during the period from 300 B.C. to 400 A.D. the time of the Colima culture. Colima is best known for its finely finished red burnished effigies, both of humans and animals, especially dogs, and the solid small unburnished figurines, commonly called Colima flats. This unusual and beautifully modeled, solid archaic standing figure is depicted in a casual pose, while in the process of movement. It measures 2 inches in width by 0.5 inches in depth by 6 inches in height(5.08 cm by 1.27 cm by 15.2 cm) The figure shows wear consistent with a Pre-Columbian dating, including rubbing and tiny chips, but generally is in very good condition. It also comes with a specially designed, hand-made museum display stand for display. Guaranteed authentic, it would make a superb addition to any collection of Pre-Columbian ceramics. The famous mural artist Diego Rivera began his collection of Mexican pottery with small Colima figures- the collection later grew into a national treasure which was eventually housed in the Rivera Museum in Mexico City. GJPaw Auctions has been in the Art business for over 25 years and is now expanding its operation to eBay. Pre-Columbian Nayarit Warrior Figure, West Mexico
Pre-Columbian Nayarit Warrior Figure. West Mexico Click on these links to view larger photos: 1- 2- 3- 4- 5- 6 A Pre-Columbian warrior figure from the ancient region of Nayarit. West Mexico, circa 200 B.C. 300 A.D. This Ixtlan Del Rio type measures approximately 4 1/2" tall by about 3 1/2" wide, and depicts a seated warrior. Because some figures of this type are seated. Which is an impractical position for someone engaged in physical combat, some scholars suggest that these figures more likely represent shamans engaged in spiritual, rather than physical, warfare. Ethnographic data also supports this theory, since these figures are almost always facing left- the direction inhabitants of the region believe is symbolically associated with malevolent spirits or misfortune. He is shown holding a staff or club in an offensive position, ... morelooking slightly toward his left, perhaps engaged in shamanic, spiritual battle with unseen forces. His face bears a fierce expression, mouth shaped as if vocalizing or blowing. He is also wearing ear and nose ornaments, a pointed hat or helmet, and a shield on his back. Interestingly, the surface of the shield is dimensionally patterned with raised areas similar to that of a turtle shell. Such objects were created exclusively to accompany the deceased in the deep shaft and chamber tombs for which the ancient cultures of this region are known. Condition: Intact overall. With restoration to very minor loss at the lower tip of the staff and to the bottom of one foot. Some chipping and minor loss at the top of the hat. Otherwise, expected weathering, wear, chipping and abrasions overall. Sediment, mineral and Manganese deposits remain, attesting to the age and authenticity of this example. Provenance: Former C. Thomas private collection. Florida, USA. Assurance of Authenticity: All items offered by Riverbend Gallery have been carefully examined and deemed authentic and ancient. For added assurance. A CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY will be included for each applicable purchase. Fully
Nayarit Seated Figure with Bowl, Pre-Columbian West Mexico
Pre-Columbian Nayarit Seated Figure with Bowl Click on these links to view larger photos: 1- 2- 3- 4- 5 A Pre-Columbian seated figure from the ancient Nayarit region of West Mexico. Circa 200 B.C. 300 A.D. Measures approximately 7 3/4" tall. This figure is aesthetically appealing due to it's subtle, abstract form and restrained features. It depicts a seated female holding a bowl in her lap. Perhaps suggesting a relationship to the production of the alcoholic beverage, Pulque, known from these ancient regions. Production of Pulque was an important symbol of status within this ancient culture. She is shown wearing a large nose ornament, arm ornaments, ear ornaments and a headband-like head dressing- all also indicative of significant social status. Condition: Intact and in excellent original condition overall. With only minor restoration ... moreto part of one arm. The original surface decoration is mostly obscured now by heavy Manganese and other mineral deposits, which are evidence of thousands of years of burial in the Shaft Tomb environment. Provenance: Former North Carolina. USA collection. Assurance of Authenticity: All items offered by Riverbend Gallery have been carefully examined and deemed authentic and ancient. For added assurance. A CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY will be included for each applicable purchase. Fully guaranteeing the item to be ancient and genuine. Large Pre-Columbian Colima Zoomorphic Incense Cover, Ancient West Mexico
A rare and fascinating zoomorphic incense cover from Pre-Columbian West Mexico. Circa 200 B.C. 300 A.D. likely attributed to the ancient Colima culture of West Mexico. This piece measures impressively at approximately 10" long by about 7 1/2" wide and about 6" tall. The form of the piece is complex. The handle appears to have been formed to represent the arched or undulating body of a lizard or snake, resting atop the dome-like body of the cover. The cover body features multiple rib-like ridges, perhaps meant to imply that the zoomorph is sitting atop a desert mound(with the ridges perhaps representing an eroded and blown sand landscape) Three feet on the bottom of the dome allow for this to function as a cover over a burnt offering(possibly copal incense) ensuring sufficient air can keep the substance smoldering, while the ... moredome-like lid allows for the area to retain heat sufficient to keep burning. Vessels of this type are well-documented in archaeological finds from this region, attributed to this function. Condition: Body is intact. With a repair at the neck of the head(with restoration over the break) and loss of the tail. Otherwise minor chipping, abrasions weathering and wear. Sediment and mineral deposits remain, indicative of an ancient piece. The underside exhibits staining from the burning of incense beneath this cover. Provenance: Former Lynn Langdon collection. Personally collected by Langdon in West Mexico between the 1940's- 1960's.

With minor chipping, abrasions weathering and wear. There is about a 3/4" long trowel or shovel impact loss line on the bottom of one side, with stable stress lines extending from that point of contact.
