Commonly called an“axe god” because of the shape. Although all of these jade figures are rare today. This one is especially unusual due to the fact that it has defined legs instead of the more common“axe” bottom, although it still maintains the traditional taper of the standard axe shape when viewed for the side. The positioning of the arms, folded upwards on each side of the chest(as in later Pre-Columbian gold figures) is also less typical than the standard figures which usually place the arms parallel across the chest. Under magnification you can see supple tooling marks throughout the surface. The marks are typical of the time period and not perfectly parallel as modern tool marks are. The surface has a nice“soft” look. Again typical for an original Mesoamerican piece, unlike the often harsh cuts and sharp edges caused by modern tools and the overall lack of finesse that the original Pre Columbian artist were so skilled at achieving(although much of that look is due to the type of tools used at the time, which would make it difficult to achieve the harsh lines that are common on modern pieces, caved with modern tools) The right foot has what I think is a small chip. Although its edges aren’t rough or sharp so perhaps it’s just an imperfection that was in the stone and not completely carved away when it was made. You can see the“chip” in the last two photos at the bottom of the page. Other than that the piece is in good shape. The hand drilled suspension hole(generally drilled using bone or wood with an abrasive) has an accumulation of mineral deposits lining the inner walls. A typical sign of age. 100% Authentic Ancient Mayan Jade Pre Columbian Axe God
Original Museum Quality Mayan Pre Columbian Axe God from my own collections. It is 9cm hight. 4.5cm wide to the widest part at the edge, 1.7cm thick, made of calcite, light blue in color, no chips, there was a hairline crack near the right eye throught the hole but was filled with some white color substance(I think that was lime stone) after long time of burial. The whole item is covered with some tinny crystals that can't removed. It is a hard item to find in this conditions and compare to those asking for thousands. Beautiful one of a kind antique Pre-Columbian Stone Effigy. Idol, Axe God Figura l Hand- C arved Statue believed to be around 200-600 BC in ag e. This piece is very heavy- weighs just over six(6) pounds and is hand-carved from a gorgeous grey toned stone- you can see the traditional stance and markings that are typical of this p articular era in Pre-Columbian Art. This is a beautiful piece from my family's estate in excellent condition as you can see from the photos. My father had a Doctorate in Pre-Columbian Art History from USC and traveled extensively throughout the world and specifically in Mexico throughout the 1940's-1950's amassing his collection through his traveling and buying at antique and auction houses. This is an authentic and highly collectible piece from his collection. My father is now deceased but passed on much ... moreof his knowledge to me throughout the years and I will do my best to describe everything I know about this piece for you. I have shown this piece with an outstanding. Rare, out of print book that was also part of my father's extensive collection, that is renowned as one of the best books(at that time) on Pre-Columbian, African, Oceanic and Indonesian Art. The book is printed in German and is titled. Kunst, Ferner, Lander" and was printed in 1956. Black hardstone. Possibly basalt. This example is in the form of a standing figure. Standing on diminutive legs with the hands resting on the abdomen. The large head is stylized with abstract, simple features and the back undulating with subtle sculptural features and is without detail. This figure has a nice smooth and somewhat glossy patina on the protruding areas. The figure won’t stand by itself and was photographed using a thin wood rod to make it stand up. Small amounts of soil encrustation in the tiny pores of the stone and crevices. HISTORY: The Pre-Columbian Mezcala Culture is a little understood culture that was based in present-day Guerrero. Mexico. A long, complex culture history of the Guerrero region prevents a finite understanding of who exactly made Mezcala objects. The culture is also called Balsas Culture because it is centered in the upper Balsas River drainage region. It is believed the Mezcala style emerged during the Pre-classic Period, between 700-200 B.C. and continued on into Classic Period to 650 A.D. Objects attributed to the the Mezcala Culture include figurines. Masks, small effigies of animals and objects, beads, pendants and earplug flares. They are carved from a variety of green, gray-green, gray and black color hardstones and jade.
