One Ceramic Pre-Classic Mayan Female Figure from PLAYA DE LOS MUERTOS. ULUA VALLEY, HONDURAS, measuring 6-1/4" high and dates in the early Pre-Columbian period. 600 to 300 BC. It is obviously a pregant female indicated by her breasts and the protruding stomach. She wears a simple headdress and simple ear spools. The figure is solid. Dense and heavy weighing about 1-1/2 pounds indicative of the Pre-Classic era. The surface is quite dark which may indicate the type of clay in the area. This is a very elaborately adorned male funerary figure with beautiful headdress. Belt, neck, shoulder decoration. It may be mold-made, but some of the markings lead me away from that conclusion. I know little to nothing about this wonder part of history but I did sell a large Mayan collection some 20 years ago on Ebay with nothing but happy customers. Figure seems to have long horns to me. These are from an Estate I bought from a gentleman who worked for Halliburton traveling the world for 50 years looking for places to dig for oil. Pre Columbian Mayan Ceramic Tripod Bowl With Cattle Legs Costa Rica
You are bidding on a pre columbian mayan ceramic tripod bowl with cattle legs. The bowl measures 5 1/2 inches wide and a little under 3 1/2 inches tall. The bowl is painted red and black. This bowl is one of the nicest painted pieces I have in the collection. You can still see almost the brush strokes on the bowls inner side. This item is very very old and 100% authentic. There are no physical breaks in the item at all. If you shake the item. You can hear something moving inside. Almost as if there is a piece if pottery loose in one of the legs or someone buried a lovely treasure inside of it, that would only be found if the item was broken. The red color is an indication that it is done in the Copador style seen in El Salvador and southern Honduras. The rim is all red and such solid colored areas is also known for the style. There are a couple of chips along the rim where the wall thickness is thinner and being on top is more subject to damage. Due to size it may have been for some small quantity substance of value; a painted piece usually means it was used ceremonially. Unpainted pieces were utilitarian, used daily. Has raised eyes and nose, mouth is open on the sides but closed at the end as this is where the bowl leg would rest on the surface. Top of the head is open as that is where it was connected to the bowl base; there is a hole on the back of the head as it is hollow and this is the opening. Solid ceramic objects tend to explode or at least break due to steam pressure when being"cooked" Frequently the legs are broken off vessels if the legs contain a rattle so they check to see if the rattles are gold balls.
