RARE ANCIENT PRE-COLUMBIAN TEXTILE-PERUVIAN MUMMY/GRAVE DOLL. CHANCAY. This is not a modern doll dressed in pre Columbian textiles. This was dug from the dessert from what the previous owner stated. It does have a very earthy smell if you smell it but in an open room it is not noticeable. They stopped allowing importing to the USA in 1921 so these are very difficult to find. A great addition to any collection.

This is an authentic pre-Colombian black on white ceramic vessel flute from the late Chancay culture(1200-1450 AD) It measures 4" X 2" X 1.5" Made from a red terracotta with white slip background and decorated with a black slip. It is in the shape of what could be a llama painted to look like it has a blanket on it's back(I have seen pictures of more elaborate llama figurines that actually had a spotted and striped textile blanket draped over their back) To me it almost looks like it could be a Lowland Paca as well(although a llama seems to make more sense) The flute has just a single hole and works similar to blowing air into a bottle except you blow from directly above instead of at an angle as with a bottle. It produces a very clear pleasing note. No repairs. A pre-Columbian(Chancay culture) earthenware bottle or jar. This ovoid vessel with a flaring neck and arched handles has two appliquéd pods attached to one of its handles. The cream slipped body is decorated with a series of vertical brown bands. Most Chancay vessels display an elementariness of form and the seemingly spontaneous application of painted decoration as shown in this piece. Little is known of the Chancay society. But evidence indicates that it represented a small regional state made up of several ethnic groups inhabiting the coasts, desert lands and valleys of central Peru between 1000-1435 A.D. The Chancay are best known for their astonishing and unique craftsmanship that valued a high level of personalisation in decorative style. Producing woodworks. A buff colored two handled vessel from the Chancay culture of pre-Columbian Peru. Ca. 1000- 1470 AD. The vessel has a flattened ovoid shape, brown painted decoration around the upper body, the handles and just below and all around the lip. Several small chips to the lip and one at the base along with a dark stain from burial. Manganese deposits and burial accretion in various locations on the body. 5-1/2" 14cm) tall, and 4-1/2" 11.5cm) maximum diameter. Peru. 1000 AD– 1450 AD. Unglazed earthenware figures such as this are typical of the Chancay. Particularly the wide flattened head. The Chancay apparently developed in relative isolation from Tihuanaco around 1200 along the central coast of Peru. The distinctive Chancay style consists of white-slipped ceramics with black-lined decoration. And an unusual primitiveness pervades Chancay ceramics. Human figures were common and were frequently dressed in elaborate textiles. This magnificent figure is beautifully decorated with dark brown/black paint on the head, face and hands. Here is an excellent painted wood mummy bundle mask decorated with a coeval textile headband. This museum-grade antiquity was carved with a characteristically broad face. Large lozenge-shaped eyes embellished with white pigment, red paint of mercury sulfide/cinnabar and black resin pupils, a prominent beaked nose and diminutive smiling mouth. Ancient Pre - Columbian Chancay Culture Pottery Llama Vessel - 1200 AD
A published and exhibited pre-Columbian(Chancay culture) earthenware figure in the form of a llama. Dating to 1000- 1435 A.D. This hollow figure of a llama stands on four stubby legs. With the large egg shaped body acting as a humorous counterpoint to the undersized head. The doe eyed facial expression conveys a sense of almost child-like naivety, the ears have been pierced and would likely have been further decorated in antiquity. Most Chancay vessels display an elementariness of form and the seemingly spontaneous application of painted decoration as shown in this piece. Though its specific purpose is now a mystery. It is possible that such vessels were made as toys for children. Little is known of the Chancay society. But evidence indicates that it represented a small regional state made up of several ethnic groups inhabiting the coasts, ... moredesert lands and valleys of central Peru between 1000-1435 A.D. The Chancay are best known for their astonishing and unique craftsmanship that valued a high level of personalisation in decorative style. Producing woodworks. Textiles and ceramics, Chancay style artefacts are prevalent across central Peru. This enigmatic society traded their goods widely with other regions either by land towards the Peruvian highlands and jungle or by sea to the north and south of their borders. As such, though the society does not appear to have wielded significant political power, the skill of their craftsmen appears to have been respected and admired. Pectorals of this form were usually worn around the neck as an ornament. There are two holes on one side. The ceramic pectorals were worn by lower ranking Chancay indians. The powerful lords and rulers wore pectorals made out of precious metals. The star points are separated by arcs of approximately 30 degrees with two arc segments used for the attachment holes. The disk is in excellent condition. There is some light chipping to the tips of some stars. But most of the star tips are intact.
